Ruy Menezes, who spent years at China Top Team working with some of Asia’s top fighters, sent in news for Jiu-Jitsu fans.

The black belt has now headed off to new stomping grounds, and has new plans. First on the list is to inaugurate the Carlson Gracie branch in Cali, Colombia, a city of growing popularity among tourists.

“I’m living in Cali right now, and I’m really happy about opening a branch of Carlson Gracie Team here in partnership with my friend Carlson Gracie Jr. The aim is to continue to wave Grandmaster Carlson’s banner,” he reported via email, explaining that he left China because of differences regarding the working relationship with his former teammates.

Now I’ve got a good MMA and Jiu-Jitsu group. I started work here less than a month ago, and we already have a competition in Medellín this Saturday, the 3rd. We’re taking six students to compete at Copa Shogun, and we expect good results,” he said in closing.

Quem manda notícias aos fãs de Jiu-Jitsu esta semana é o professor Ruy Menezes, que integrou durante alguns anos a China Top Team, equipe de algumas professas do UFC na Ásia.

Agora, o faixa-preta está em novas paragens,e com outros planos. O primeiro é inaugurar sem demora a filial da escola Carlson Gracie em Cali, na Colômbia, cidade cada vez mais elogiada pelos turistas.

“Estou morando em Cali agora, e estou muito feliz por abrir a Carlson Gracie Team aqui, em parceria com meu amigo Carlson Gracie Jr. O objetivo é continuar levantando a bandeira do grande mestre Carlson”, contou ele, em papo por email, explicando que deixou a China por divergências em relação à forma de trabalhar dos ex-companheiros.

“Agora já estou com uma boa turma de MMA e também de Jiu-Jitsu. Comecei a trabalhar aqui faz menos de um mês, e já temos uma competição em Medellín neste sábado, dia 3. Estamos levando seis alunos para disputar a Copa Shogun de Jiu-Jitsu, e espero trazer bons resultados”, concluiu.

Unbeaten in seventeen fights, the Chinese fighter most often relies on his submission savvy to end his bouts. That’s how it went at WEC 51 on September 30, when he quickly put away Pablo Garza on his promotional debut.

“He won by guillotine at 2:26 min. Now he’ll be back in the WE on December 16 in Phoenix against Daniel “Danny Boy” Downes. Tie Quan has seventeen fights on his record and is undefeated,” comments trainer Ruy Menezes.

“He’s the first fighter from China to sign a WEC contract and we’ll probably put an athlete into the UFC in the first half of 2011,” adds the coach.

GRACIEMAG.com já havia avisado sobre Tie Quan Zhang (leia aqui), atleta bom de chão do faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Ruy Menezes, na China Top Team.  Invicto em 17 lutas, o chinês costuma finalizar seus combates. Foi assim no WEC 51, no dia 30 de setembro, quando definiu rapidamente contra Pablo Garza na estreia pela organização.   

“Ele ganhou com uma guilhotina aos 2min26s. Agora voltará ao WEC no dia 16 de dezembro, em Phoenix, contra Daniel “Danny Boy” Downes. O Tie Quan tem 17 lutas de MMA e está invicto”, comenta o treinador Ruy Menezes.   

“Ele foi o primeiro chinês a assinar contrato com o WEC e provavelmente colocarei um atleta no UFC no primeiro semestre de 2011.”, completa o treinador.

Faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu, Ruy Menezes difunde a arte suave na Ásia, onde comanda a China Top Team. Além disso, o treinador também puxa os treinos de MMA na equipe, que já conta com alguns campeões.

A China é um mercado emergente em várias áreas e no vale-tudo não é diferente.

“Aqui rola o The Legend, que é um evento de MMA muito bom na Ásia”, conta Ruy, antes de falar de seu atleta mais promissor.

“No dia 24 de junho estive em Hong Kong para a segunda edição do The Legend. Levei meu atleta Zhang Tie Quan, que está com 10 lutas e invicto. Ele ganhou com uma guilhotina na guarda em 30 segundos de luta do campeão da Nova Zelândia Daniel Digby”, fala orgulhoso do aluno, que também já se apresentou no Art of War.

Prova de que Tie Quan está com o chão afiado é o número de finalizações do lutador. Ao todo são sete. No vídeo abaixo, a vitória foi com um triângulo. Confira:

Jiu-Jitsu black belt Ruy Menezes is bolstering the gentle art scene in Asia, where he leads China Top Team. The coach  also heads MMA training at the team, which already counts a number of winners.

China is an emerging market in several sectors, and with MMA it’s no different.

“Here there’s the The Legend event, which is a really good MMA event in Asia,” says Ruy, before speaking of his most promising athlete.

“This past June 24 the second installment of The Legend was held in Hong Kong. I took my fighter Zhang Tie Quan, who is undefeated in 10 fights. He beat New Zealand’s Daniel Digby by guillotine from the guard in 30 seconds,” said the proud teacher of his student, who should soon make an appearance in the Art of War event.

Proof Tie Quan’s grappling savvy is the number of submission wins the fighter has come up with. In all his tally comes to seven. Check out his win via triangle in the video below:
