A 39-year-old professor of English Literature in Pennsylvania, USA, Jonathan Gottschall has published six books and a number of interesting theories. Some of them may even be revolutionary, like the one about the importance of works of fiction in the development of the human race, a theses he presented in his latest book, The Storytelling Animal: How Stories Make Us Human.

In other words, he’d be a nutty intellectual like all the rest, were it not for one detail: his fixation for MMA, a sport he started practicing a year and a half ago, for which his brutal curiosity led him to… step into the ring and go toe to toe just a few weeks ago.

“By practicing MMA I learned, above all, that I’m a man of contradictions. I didn’t do it for personal reasons, but intellectual ones. I wanted to understand why men fight in ritual combat and the reasons that lead a gentle personal like myself to delight in these spectacles of barbarity,” said the writer.

An interview with Gottschall was featured in the latest issue of Brazil’s Veja magazine, more excerpts of which you will find to come:

WHY MAN FIGHTS

“Both literature and social sciences have shown that through combat man pursues status. It may seem like a vain reason but status determines where an individual figures in the hierarchies. Being at the bottom of the hierarchy, both for man and animals, is a bad place to be—and of course, it’s an obvious risk to survival.”

UFC, MMA AND EVOLUTION

“When I started watching, back in the 1990s, I was impressed by the violence of the sport. I couldn’t believe such a form of fighting could be legal. Honestly, the fights turned my stomach. I still get sickened by some situations. MMA doesn’t impose limits on aggressiveness. Besides being the utmost expression of human brutality, it is a very eclectic style, one that accepts modification and is in constant evolution. Other styles, like karate and judo, have established rules, don’t incorporate new moves. I’ll go out on a limb and say that MMA is the most evolved form of martial art.”

THE FIGHT AND THE DISAPPOINTMENT

“It was my first and last fight. I don’t want to do it again. I was defeated by armbar, but that wasn’t the problem. The worst part was the ultimate anticlimax. I wasn’t sweaty or even tired. After a year and a half of training, dieting and a month of anxiety leading up to my stepping in the cage, I was disappointed. It all went so quickly. I was hoping for something more epic, prolonged and brutal. Something like Homer’s Odyssey or Iliad.”

Americano de 39 anos, Jonathan Gottschall ensina literatura inglesa na Pensilvânia, lançou seis livros e tem diversas teorias interessantes. Algumas talvez sejam revolucionárias, como a importância das obras de ficção no desenvolvimento da raça humana, tese que expõe em seu último livro, “The Storytelling Animal: How Stories Make Us Human”, ainda sem edição em português (algo como “O animal contador de histórias: como as histórias nos fazem humanos”).

Ou seja, um intelectual maluco como outro qualquer, não fosse por um detalhe: sua fixação pelo MMA, esporte que começou a praticar há um ano e meio, e cuja curiosidade brutal o levou a… lutar num ringue, coisa de poucas semanas atrás.

“Ao treinar MMA, aprendi, acima de tudo, que sou um homem contraditório. Não fiz isso por razões pessoais, mas por motivos intelectuais. Queria entender por que os homens lutam em combates rituais e quais as razões que levam um cara gentil como eu a se deleitar com esses espetáculos de barbrárie”, disse o escritor.

Gottschall foi o entrevistado das “páginas amarelas” da última edição da Revista “Veja”, e o que aprendemos de melhor com a entrevista está a seguir.

Por que os homens brigam

“Tanto a literatura quanto as ciências sociais mostram que nos combates os homens estão em busca de status. Pode parecer um motivo fútil, mas o status é determinante para posicionar um indivíduo nas hierarquias. Estar no fim da fila hierárquica, tanto para o homem quanto para os animais, é muito ruim – e, claro, um óbvio risco à sobrevivência.”

UFC, MMA e evolução

“Quando comecei a assistir, nos anos 1990, fiquei impressionado com a violência do esporte. Não pude acreditar que essa era uma forma de luta legalizada. Honestamente, os combates me reviravam o estômago. Ainda fico enojado em algumas situações. O MMA não impõe limites para a agressividade. Além de ser a expressão máxima da brutalidade humana, tem-se ali uma modalidade muito eclética, que aceita modificações e está em constante evolução. Outras categorias, como o karatê e o judô, possuem regras fixas, não incorporam novos golpes. Arrisco-me a dizer que o MMA é a mais evoluída forma de arte marcial.”

A luta e a decepção

“Foi a primeira e última. Não quero fazer isso de novo, Fui derrotado por uma chave de braço, mas não foi esse o problema. O pior foi o anticlímax do final. Não estava suado nem cansado. Depois de um ano e meio de treinos, dietas e um mês de ansiedade para entrar no octógono, fiquei decepcionado. Foi tudo muito rápido. Esperava algo mais épico, prolongado e brutal. Como na ‘Odisseia’, ou na ‘Ilíada’, de Homero.”
