Bullying is such a commonplace and persistent problem that Rener Gracie, a few months ago and with great repercussions, presented an antibullying project on American talk show host Oprah Winfrey’s television program. Jiu-Jitsu does indeed appear to be an excellent tool in combating this sad practice that afflicts children and teenagers the world over, even driving them, in some cases, to suicide.

But who is the big villain? I can tell you there are no villains in this story, since I was the victim of this practice when I was a kid, and I am fully aware that the aggressor too is a victim of misguided (and natural) human aggressiveness. I have also followed cases in the Abu Dhabi school system where I teach Jiu-Jitsu.

We’re naturally aggressive, which is why Jiu-Jitsu is important to all kids, as it controls the aggressiveness of those most out of control and stimulates competition in those most passive. Children need positive stimulus and disciplinary control, elements intrinsic to the gentle art.

The boy Ritchard Gale is now suffering from bullying just as cruel as what he delved out, as he has taken the brunt of what is possible with the internet. It’s up to us to provide greater access to Jiu-Jitsu so that cases like this one may become rarer and rarer. And so that youths only face off, driven by mutual respect, on the mats.

O bullying é tão corriqueiro e persistente que Rener Gracie apresentou, há poucos meses e com grande repercussão, um projeto antibulllying no programa da apresentadora americana Oprah Winfrey. O Jiu-Jitsu, de fato, apresenta-se como uma excelente ferramenta para combater esta triste prática, que aflige crianças e adolescentes do mundo todo, podendo levá-los, inclusive, ao suicídio.

Mas quem é o grande vilão? Acreditem, não existem vilões nesta história. Posso afirmar isso, pois fui vítima dessa prática quando criança, e tenho plena consciência de que o agressor também é uma vítima da (natural) agressividade humana mal direcionada. Tenho também acompanhado casos na rede escolar de Abu Dhabi, nos Emirados, onde ministramos aulas de Jiu-Jitsu.

É natural sermos agressivos, por isso o Jiu-Jitsu é importante para todas as crianças, pois controla a agressividade dos mais descontrolados e estimula a competição nos mais passivos. Crianças precisam de estímulos positivos e de controle disciplinar, elementos intrínsecos à arte suave.

O menino Ritchard Gale hoje está sofrendo com um bullying tão cruel quanto o por ele perpetrado, pois sofre com o assédio que a internet possibilita. Cabe a nós possibilitarmos mais acesso ao Jiu-Jitsu para que casos como esse sejam cada vez mais raros. E para que meninos só se confrontem, encorajados por um respeito mútuo, nos dojôs.

Casey é o garotão rechonchudo que virou celebridade no YouTube ao revidar uma agressão numa escola em Saint Marys North, na Austrália. Com o contra-ataque, tão inesperado quanto violento, virou um símbolo anti-bullying, o mal que infesta os colégios do planeta, e em especial os americanos, segundo a grande mídia dos EUA.

Mas Casey é o “herói” que ninguém gostaria que se multiplicasse. Em especial os entusiastas e professores de Jiu-Jitsu, que cada vez mais defendem que a arte é o melhor remédio para combater o mal da covardia que assola os colégios.

De fato, o Jiu-Jitsu bem ensinado não oferece apenas os meios para a criança se defender sozinha. Após treinar nas boas academias do ramo, o aluno ganha autoconfiança, amigos e a compreensão de que intimidar e medir forças com coleguinhas é uma grande bobagem.

Casey is the rotund kid who became an instant celebrity on Youtube after striking back at a bully in Saint Marys North, in Australia. With his counter-attack, as unexpected as it was violent, he became a worldwide symbol of anti-bullying, an ill plaguing schools across the planet – and especially American ones, according to the greater US media.

But Casey is the “hero” no one wishes there were more of. Especially Jiu-Jitsu enthusiasts and teachers, who speak up more and more in defense of the art as the best medicine to combat the syndrome plaguing schools.
