At 32 years of age, Bráulio “Carcará” Estima made his long awaited MMA debut last Friday in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, at the MMA event Titan FC 24.

The decorated Jiu-Jitsu competitor and ADCC 2011 superchampion choked Chris Holland unconscious with an arm-and-neck choke 3:21 minutes into their fight, to the joy of Estima’s Gracie Barra and Blackzilians teammates, including Vitor Belfort, Rashad Evans and others.

The Zé Radiola student then spoke to GRACIEMAG.com about what he learned with the experience:

GRACIEMAG.com: Was it an arm-triangle you’ll remember for the rest of your life? How did it come together?

BRÁULIO ESTIMA: Yes, for sure. I feel the arm-and-neck choke is one of my greatest weapons. Once I get my elbow around—whether in mount, half-guard or sometimes even in side-control—, I’m really close to my objective of ending the fight. I try and focus on not letting that elbow slip off throughout the entire process. I use that whole part of my body, but the most important part is the readjustment of the shoulder against the opponent’s neck right after I get his arm across to the other side of his head.

At what point in your debut did you have the most fun?

It was a great experience for me. I enjoyed every minute of it, from training all the way to cutting weight. I feel everything went as smoothly as possible. I learned a lot throughout the journey and mainly during the fight itself. There are some aspects of Jiu-Jitsu that only click once you’re in there; it’s something you can’t explain.

Do you feel you made many mistakes? Is there anything you’d like to iron out for the next ones?

Yes, the biggest mistake I made was to go overboard with the food after making weight in Kansas City. I ate so much that I had to throw up after not managing to kick the mitts during warm-up. I wasn’t sick; I was just stuffed (laughs).

And what about during the fight?

I feel I have to walk in to the cage already revved up for war, because I went in there really relaxed, expecting things to build up slowly… And it builds up the whole time; you can’t let yourself lose focus. I also feel I need to position my guard better, seeing as the little gloves don’t protect you from your opponent’s strikes much. Anyone who does a lot of boxing has to be keen to that.

Do you have any tips for Jiu-Jitsu fighters who are thinking about practicing MMA?

To be a professional, it’s really important that you’ve got a foundation on your feet, even if it’s just enough of one to distract the opponent before shooting in on his legs. I recommend doing a lot of wrestling up against the wall and Jiu-Jitsu with the gloves on, shirtless and with Vaseline on your face to simulate what it’s really like in there, because it’ really slippery. I liked it; it was a good first step. Now I need to improve my guard to not end up backpedaling, which is where the danger lies.

Aos 32 anos, Bráulio “Carcará” Estima fez sua aguardada estreia no MMA pelo evento Titan FC 24, em Kansas City, na última sexta-feira.

O campeão de Jiu-Jitsu e supercampeão do ADCC 2011 apagou Chris Holland com um katagatame aos 3min21s de luta, fazendo a alegria dos companheiros da Gracie Barra e da equipe de MMA Blackzilians, como Vitor Belfort, Rashad Evans e outros astros.

O pupilo de Zé Radiola comentou o que aprendeu com o GRACIEMAG.com.

GRACIEMAG.com: Foi um katagatame para ficar para sempre nas suas lembranças? Qual foi o pulo-do-gato?

BRÁULIO ESTIMA: Sim, certamente. Acho que o katagatame é uma das minhas armas mais fortes. Uma vez que consigo envolver o cotovelo, seja na montada, meia-guarda e algumas vezes até no cem-quilos, eu fico muito próximo do objetivo de encerrar a luta. Procuro focar bem em não perder aquele cotovelo durante o processo todo. Uso toda a parte do meu corpo para manter a pressão, mas o mais importante é o reajuste do ombro contra o pescoço do adversário, logo depois que eu passo o braço dele para o outro lado da cabeça.

Qual foi o momento da estreia em que você se divertiu mais?

Foi uma grande experiência para mim. Curti cada minuto, da preparação até o corte de peso. Achei que tudo saiu da melhor forma possível. Aprendi bastante durante essa jornada e principalmente durante a luta em si. Tem alguns aspectos do Jiu-Jitsu que só clicam quando você está lá em dentro, é algo inexplicável.

Você acha que errou muito? Alguma coisa que você já quer corrigir nas próximas?

Sim, e o maior erro foi me empolgar com a comida após bater o peso na balança em Kansas City. Comi tanto que na hora de entrar tive de vomitar por não ter conseguido chutar manopla no aquecimento. Eu não passei mal, mas estava estufado (risos).

E na hora da luta, alguma falha?

Acho que preciso entrar no cage já na pilha de guerra, pois entrei muito relaxado esperando que o caldo fosse engrossar aos poucos… E engrossa o tempo todo, não se pode bobear. Acho que também devo posicionar a guarda melhor pelo fato de a luvinha pequena não proteger muito dos golpes do adversário. Quem treina muito com luva de boxe tem de prestar atenção nisso.

Qual a dica que você deixa para o lutador de Jiu-Jitsu que pensa em praticar MMA?

Para ser profissional, é muito importante ter uma base em pé, nem que seja o suficiente para desviar a atenção do adversário antes de entrar nas pernas. Recomendo muito wrestling contra a parede e treinar muito Jiu-Jitsu com luva, sem camisa e vaselina no rosto para simular bem como é lá, porque escorrega muito mesmo. Gostei, foi um bom primeiro passo. Agora é melhorar minha guarda para não ficar caminhando para trás, que é onde mora o perigo.

UFC welterweight Nick Diaz everybody knows. He’s that skillful fighter with a scowl permanently stamped on his face with no set date for his return to the octagon, for having tested positive for marijuana. Now Bráulio Estima, a teacher at Gracie Barra and the ADCC 2011 superchampion, is a major name in the Jiu-Jitsu world. As the gang at MiddleEasy.com have already suggested, if Carcará were a Playstation character, Sony would have to create new buttons for the console, so diverse is the array of moves at his disposal.

And it was precisely MiddleEasy reporter LayzieTheSavate who caught up with Diaz’s coach and master, Cesar Gracie, to pick his brains about the under-180 lb supermatch on the coming 12th of May at the inaugural World Jiu-Jitsu Expo in Long Beach.

We sorted some of the highlights from the conversation with Cesar Gracie.

NICK DIAZ’S CHANCES AGAINST BRÁULIO ESTIMA

“I feel Nick is being underestimated by the fans. He’s not a pugilist who learned Jiu-Jitsu; he’s a Jiu-Jitsu fighter who learned boxing. He knows plenty about Jiu-Jitsu, an art he’s been doing since he was young, and can stand his own. I feel it will be a great fight. Bráulio Estima is the best there is right now. And he’s a cool guy, trains with my cousin Roger, and despite the distance between us we all come from the same roots, the same team, the same origins. I have a lot of respect for those guys.

NEGOTIATIONS WITH JIU-JITSU EXPO

“Nick really wanted to take part in the tournament at the expo, and the promoters of the fair thought it would be cool if he were in a superfight. Nick said he’d be down to face anyone; he just wanted to test himself against the best. First it was going to be in the gi, then they came up with the opponent, so they called asking if it could be under No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu rules. Nick initially wanted to test himself in the gi, but he wasn’t opposed to it at all. Even while under suspension from the athletic commission, he’s been training MMA every day and is in shape.

WHAT THE OUTCOME WILL MEAN TO NICK DIAZ

“If he loses, he loses. Nick’s not worried about it. Now I feel that if he wins it will be huge, historic. Though he does have top-notch Jiu-Jitsu, Nick does other things on a day-to-day basis; he’s an MMA fighter and trains other aspects of fighting and doesn’t dedicate his time to Jiu-Jitsu the way Bráulio does. But none of that scares him. If Nick wins, it will be historic; it would be like that hockey team that in 1984 beat the Russian professionals.”

What do you think, gentle reader, will Bráulio get the finish? Will the UFC star surprise and win? What’s your prediction for the coming 12th?

Nick Diaz, peso meio-médio do UFC, todos já conhecem. É aquele talentoso meio-médio do UFC que vive de cara feia, e hoje cumpre suspensão por doping (maconha), sem saber quando volta ao octagon. Já Bráulio Estima, professor da GB e supercampeão do ADCC 2011, é famoso no mundo do Jiu-Jitsu. Como os colegas do site MiddleEasy.com já definiram, se Carcará fosse um personagem de Playstation, a Sony precisaria criar novos botões para o controle, tamanha sua variedade de golpes.

Foi justamente o MiddleEasy, com seu repórter LayzieTheSavage, que encontrou-se com Cesar Gracie, o técnico e mestre de Diaz, para saber o que pensa o treinador sobre a superluta, válida pela categoria até 180 libras, no próximo dia 12 de maio, na 1ª World Jiu-Jitsu Expo, em Long Beach.

As chances de Nick Diaz contra Bráulio Estima

“Acho que o Nick está sendo um pouco superestimado pelos fãs, ele não é um pugilista que aprendeu Jiu-Jitsu, e sim um atleta de Jiu-Jitsu que sabe lutar boxe hoje. Ele sabe bastante Jiu-Jitsu, arte que treina desde pequeno, e tem como oferecer muita resistência. Eu acho que será uma grande luta, Bráulio Estima é o melhor na modalidade hoje. E é um cara legal, treina com meu primo Roger, e apesar da nossa distância geográfica somos de alguma maneira todos da mesma raiz, mesmo time, da mesma origem. Tenho muito respeito por esses caras.

A negociação com a Jiu-Jitsu Expo

“De fato Nick queria participar do torneio (da IBJJF) da Expo, e os organizadores da feira acharam mais legal ele protagonizar uma superluta. Nick disse que topava lutar com quem fosse, ele apenas quis se testar contra os melhores do mundo. Primeiro seria com kimono, depois eles fecharam o oponente, e então ligaram perguntando se poderia ser na regra do Jiu-Jitsu sem kimono. Nick queria se testar de kimono inicialmente, mas não se opôs de forma alguma. Mesmo suspenso pela Comissão Atlética, ele vem treinando MMA todo dia e está em plena forma.

O que o resultado representa para Nick Diaz

“Se perder, perdeu, Nick não está preocupado com isso. Agora, eu acho que se ele vencer será algo enorme, histórico. Apesar de ter um Jiu-Jitsu refinado, Nick faz outras coisas no seu dia-a-dia, é um lutador de MMA e treina outros aspectos da luta também e não se dedica ao Jiu-Jitsu tanto quanto Bráulio, um supercampeão no auge em sua modalidade, que vem competindo sempre. Mas nada o assusta. Se Nick vencer, será histórico, será como aqueles garotos do hóquei que em 1984 venceram os russos profissionais (sorri).”

Os organizadores da World Jiu-Jitsu Expo confirmaram, e você viu em primeira mão pelo nosso Twitter. A luta de Jiu-Jitsu do astro do UFC Nick Diaz será contra Bráulio Estima, nas regras do Jiu-Jitsu sem kimono, e no peso até 82kg, ou 180 libras.

A 1ª World Jiu-Jitsu Expo será no dia 12 de maio em Long Beach, e a superluta será apenas uma das atrações. Antes de confirmar a participação do Carcará, atual supercampeão sem kimono do ADCC, a organização surpreendeu ao tentar BJ Penn como adversário de Nick. A produção do evento entrou em contato com JD Penn, irmão e empresário do ex-campeão do UFC, que declinou do convite, apesar da evidente empolgação.

“That would be huge! But right now BJ is retired from competing” (“Isso seria grandioso! Mas no momento BJ está aposentado das competições), respondeu JD Penn.

Sobre a opção por Bráulio Estima, os organizadores do evento capitaneado por Renzo Gracie dizem que o objetivo é oferecer uma experiência inesquecível para o fã de Jiu-Jitsu. Diferentemente do que alguns poderiam supor, jamais pensaram em dar um oponente fácil para Nick Diaz.

The organizers of the World Jiu-Jitsu Expo made the announcement first hand on our  Twitter account. The Jiu-Jitsu match featuring UFC star Nick Diaz has been made, with Bráulio Estima entering as his opponent under No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu rules, and the weight has been set at 82 kg, or 180 lbs.

The inaugural World Jiu-Jitsu Expo will be going down May 12 in Long Beach, California, and this supermatch will be just one of the attractions. Prior to current ADCC superchamp“Carcará’s” entrance into the picture, the promoters of the event made a surprise bid to bring in BJ Penn as Nick’s opponent, making contact with JD Penn, the brother and manager of the former UFC champion, who declined the invitation, despite apparent enthusiasm.

“That would be huge! But right now BJ is retiring from competing,” was JD Penn’s response.

On their going with  Bráulio Estima, the promoters of the event captained by Renzo Gracie say the aim is to offer Jiu-Jitsu fans an unforgettable experience. Contrary to what many may have assumed, they never considered feeding Nick Diaz an easy opponent.

Champion of his weight class and the absolute at the lat ADCC championship, in 2009, Bráulio Estima is anxious to make his MMA debut. Under contract to the Shine organization, “Carcará” feels that defending the Gentle Art in the ring and cage is a great responsibility, more so as he is a top-ranked competitor in the style. Nevertheless, he remains confident.

“I’m excited. I’m not nervous; I like fighting. I can’t wait to get in the ring. I just got back from a tough training session and I feel great. I have plenty of time to get in shape,” he told MMAJunkie.

Bráulio should do part of his training with another Gracie Barra black belt, Renato Babalu. Furthermore, he will count on the backing of renowned MMA trainer Greg Jackson. In a recent interview with GRACIEMAG.com, the Brazilian was unable to confirm who his opponent for  his debut will be, but said, “I’m going to fight a guy who’s undefeated in his five-fight career! And he’s one of the best in the world in his martial art.”

According to the article, the opponent is a three-time national judo champion.

Estima also remarked on the loss suffered by his friend Rolles Gracie, at the hands of Joey Beltran at UFC 109.

“His performance wasn’t even near what we and he expected. He carried a ton of injuries in training. He hurt his rib and had to stop training for a few weeks (Rolles also injured his foot). But he was excited about fighting and put a lot of pressure on himself,” he says.
