The life of a BJJ coach isn’t easy. Depending on his stature, branches scattered through the world are coordinated by him and his team, and often those athletes can fight each other. To André Galvão, leader of Atos, a similar case will occur soon, but in MMA.

The highly anticipated bout between  Anderson Silva and Israel Adesanya at UFC Australia, next February 10th, marks an encounter between the former middleweight champion and the division’s new breakout star. And André Galvão had the opportunity to watch them both very closely.

Adesanya, a BJJ blue-belt, was promoted by Galvão, given that the Nigeria-born New Zealander trains at Atos Auckland. But Galvão was recruited for Anderson’s camp, and he has already agreed to sharpen the Spider’s ground game for the duel.

“Adesanya’s teacher is my student,” Galvão told Brazilian MMA site PVT. “He has lots of experience in MMA and kickboxing and follows our didactics for BJJ training. Since I’m the leader of Atos, he ends up becoming ‘my student,’ but really he trains with Eugene Bareman. He is very slippery, knows how to defend well and has a good technical level for MMA. He likes learning and goes to every seminar when we go to visit them.”

“Anderson, on the other hand, has been a friend of mine for a long time,” Galvão added. “He has helped me a lot; he’s family. He invited me to help him. At the moment, I’m doing a seminar tour — the schedule is packed — but as soon as I’m done, I’m joining his camp. Israel knows this; indeed, as soon as the fight was announced, he sent me a message himself saying he’d understand if I needed to help Anderson for this fight.”

A vida de um treinador de Jiu-Jitsu não é fácil. Dependendo do calibre do professor, filiais espalhadas pelo mundo todo são coordenadas por ele e sua equipe, e por vezes esses atletas tendem a se enfrentar. Para André Galvão, líder da Atos, um caso similar irá acontecer em breve, mas no MMA.

O esperado duelo entre Anderson Silva e Israel Adesanya, no UFC Austrália, dia 10 de fevereiro, marca o encontro entre o antigo campeão dos médios com a nova sensação da categoria. André Galvão, por sua vez, teve a oportunidade de observar os dois atletas de perto.

Adesanya, faixa-azul de Jiu-Jitsu, recebeu a graduação das mãos de Galvão, já que o nigeriano naturalizado neozelandês treina na Atos em Auckland. Contudo, foi para o camp de Anderson Silva que Galvão foi escalado, e o professor já deixou sua positiva para afiar as armas do jogo de solo do Aranha para o duelo.

“O Adesanya é aluno de nossa filial Atos Jiu-Jitsu em Auckland, na Nova Zelândia”, disse Galvão em entrevista ao PVT. “O professor dele é meu aluno, tem muita experiência no MMA e no Kickboxing e segue a nossa didática de treino para Jiu-Jitsu. Como sou o líder da Atos, ele acaba virando ‘meu aluno’, mas ele treina mesmo é com o Eugene Bareman. Ele é bem escorregadio, sabe se defender e tem um bom nível técnico para o MMA. Gosta de aprender e vai em todos os seminários quando a gente vai visitar eles.

“O Anderson, por sua vez,é meu amigo há muito tempo, já me ajudou muito, é da família. Ele me convidou para ajudá-lo. No momento estou em uma turnê de seminários, a agenda realmente está apertada, mas assim que terminar eu me junto ao camp dele. O Israel sabe disso, tanto que, assim que a luta foi anunciada, ele mesmo me mandou uma mensagem dizendo que entenderia se eu precisasse ajudar o Anderson para esta luta.”

Learn from Roger Gracie the tricks to avoid losing the armbar

Roger Gracie was in Rio de Janeiro recently to wow the crowd at Gracie Pro and teach the world the value of the basics.

The ten-time world champion also paid a visit to his friend Kléber “Buiú” Paulino’s gym, in a much-sought-after seminar among Gracie Barra students.

As he taught his favorite armbar from the guard, Roger said he learned from a student how to make the position more uncomfortable by swapping the hand that goes on the collar, and showed the way in which he likes controlling an opponent’s posture.

Roger also showed how he uses his legs to prevent his opponent from freeing their arm, as well as other details that can probably add something to your jiu-jitsu. You can catch the lesson in this video.

When was the last time you did something for the first time? If you have never experienced the unmatched feeling of putting on a gi and learning how to beat someone 50kg heavier, or even if you stopped training for fear of hurting your hands, this is the first fear you must jettison. Believe it: the benefits of BJJ outweigh the risks a thousand to one.

But perhaps that’s not even the worst fear in the life of a BJJ student.

To Soul Fighters teacher Bruno “Tanque” Mendes, a brother of world champion Augusto Tanquinho, the fear to raise one’s finger and ask questions can be a mighty enemy to a white-belt or a blue-belt.

“BJJ is always in constant evolution,” Bruno says. “And the best way to stay up to date is to study, learn, ask and seek out new information, either at your gym or at good seminars in your town.”

“I think the student must always be asking, and must never be afraid to ask — at the gym or at a seminar at another school,” he adds. “You just have to do it politely, at the right time. If the teacher, for example, opens the opportunity for questions and answers, then go ahead and satisfy your curiosity. Don’t think that your question is silly. You can bet there’s someone else in the class with the same question on their mind. If the class or seminar ends with no time for questions, then approach the teacher and see whether they would mind answering your questions.”

This tip is good also regarding positions that are a bit different from what was shown by the instructor. “If you like executing the position taught in a different way,” Tanque advises, “then get the teacher and ask about details. The truth is that every good teacher likes being asked about that which they are sharing. The exchange of information is important in BJJ, whether you are a black-belt or a white-belt.”

If you are a black-belt, it might be worth trying to take the work home with you. “I also recommend asking the teacher whether they mind you taping some positions,” Tanque says. “In the case of a reply in the negative, ask whether you can write it down in a notebook. Having a record of what was presented and discussed — and not just the technical movements, but mainly the concepts — will help you in the following weeks when you go to the gym to work on the positions learned.”

Quanto mais longa a carreira de um lutador, mais chances isto tem de ocorrer. Afinal, o intercâmbio é um acontecimento não apenas normal no mundo do Jiu-Jitsu e do MMA moderno, mas também benéfico para o jogo do atleta profissional, que soma novas armas para o arsenal quando troca informações (e alguns sopapos) com lutadores de outras academias. E ocorre, vez ou outra, de um antigo sparring evoluir e cruzar seu caminho sonhando com um cinturão.

Aconteceu de novo, agora com Vitor Belfort, 39 anos, e Ronaldo Jacaré, 36 anos. Sim, os dois pesos médios brasileiros que se enfrentam no UFC 198, em Curitiba, já foram parceiros de treino por uma temporada memorável.

A equipe GRACIEMAG estava lá, presente na beira do camp. Os primeiros treinos entre Vitor Belfort e Ronaldo Jacaré se deram em março de 2005, em Teresópolis, zona serrana do Rio de Janeiro. Belfort, que em outubro deste ano vai completar 20 anos como profissional, estava escalado para o Grand Prix de pesos médios do Pride (93kg, na organização japonesa).

O carioca precisava reforçar seus treinos após sair da Brazilian Top Team. Com o intermédio do empresário Jorge Guimarães, Vitor subiu a serra rumo à academia do faixa-preta Adilson Bita e atraiu outros nomes fortes do Jiu-Jitsu, como Erik Wanderley, Rodrigo Durok e o então campeão mundial absoluto pela IBJJF (2004), Ronaldo Souza, o Jacaré. Além deles, instrutores de boxe e muay thai foram contratados.

Os treinos no chão pegavam fogo, e eram um deleite para fãs e analistas de Jiu-Jitsu. Jaca e Belfort ficavam um bom tempo, também, treinando entrada de quedas e defesa esparramando, para afiar a base de Vitor e evitar que o faixa-preta de Carlson Gracie fosse posto para baixo.

Jaca, por sua vez, tinha duas lutas de MMA na carreira, pelo Jungle Fight, e sonhava com o reconhecimento internacional, que viria rápido. O único refresco nas longas horas de treino eram num rio gelado próximo da academia, onde o time de Belfort curtia uma cachoeira e esfriava a musculatura.

Apesar dos treinamentos duros, Vitor não se deu bem no Pride GP, e perdeu para Alistair Overeem em abril de 2005, em Osaka, capturado por uma guilhotina.

The 2016 Pan Jiu-Jitsu championship is knocking on our door.

Scheduled March 16*-20, the second most important event of the calendar should be once again one of the highlights of the year.

As competitors get ready to go, we decided to list a few options for you to improve your training experience leading up to the 2016 Pan.

Some of the biggest Jiu-Jitsu teams are organizing training camps.

Read below to know what you have to do to join the classes.

Gracie Barra: In Irvine, California, the red shield team will gather from March 12th to March 16th for five days of intensive training under no other than Master Carlos Gracie Jr. This camp is exclusive for GB students and the investment is $100. Click here to know more and to sign up now.

Caio Terra: In San Jose, California, Caio Terra is also inviting for a training camp for the 2016 Pan. It actually started this Monday, Feb. 29, and goes on until March 16. If you join it, you’ll be able to train with the likes of Caio, Yuri Simões, Kristina Barlaan, Victor Paschoal, Kim Terra, among others. Ares JJ/Soul Fighters: The two teams have joined forces to put together one of the strongest camps for the 2016 Pan Jiu-Jitsu championship. They will gather an impressive roster of black belts to offer some of the best instruction and training available. The names include Samir Chantre, Osvaldo Queixinho, Rafael Formiga, João Gabriel Rocha, Milton Bastos, Marcus Antelante, Manny Diaz, Vicente Junior, Nick Maez, Vinicius Agudo, Aaron Zarballos. The camp will rotate among four different academies in Northern California, on March 5-13. They will offer two classes per day and the investment is $100 for students of the two associations and $150 for non-students. The cost for a single session is $40. For more info, email info@aresbjj.com.

Atos JJ

Atos JJ/AOJ: One of the strongest teams around, Atos JJ/AOJ is already training for the 2016 Pan. They gather in San Diego, at the teams headquarters under Andre Galvão; and in Costa Mesa, at AOJ, under the Mendes Bros. You’ll find some of the best training available, with the likes of Galvão, the Mendes, Keenan Cornelius, JT Torres, Michael Liera, Josh Hinger, among others.
