Osvaldo “Queixinho” will be across the country for the 2014 IBJJF Pan No-Gi Championship on Sept. 27 but in the meantime he will be teaching some seminars around the area. The Caio Terra Association member boasts competition results around the world and countless hours of teaching.

Samir Chantre is another black belt ready for the 2014 World Championship. Going for the featherweight gold medal this weekend, Samir is a Caio Terra Association black belt who has much competition experience.

Graciemag spoke with the black belt on his training, Caio Terra’s status and the submission-only formats for tournaments:

GRACIEMAG: How is your training going for this years worlds? Are you doing anything different this year to prepare than in previous years?

SAMIR CHANTRE: Training has been amazing. It’s been a very busy season for me with a lot of tournaments lined up so I’ve been training a lot non stop. For Worlds, like we always do prior to the major tournaments, we are having our camp at the Institute of Martial Arts with a lot of good guys to train and led by Caio.
One thing I’m doing different is conditioning training that I never did before. Alan Moraes, my first instructor back in Brazil, is the one that is taking care of my conditioning training, sending me my training all the way from Brazil. It has been amazing and I’m feeling great and most importantly, I’m injure-free even with all this hard training.

You recently fought in Metamoris. How was that experience and do you prefer that style of matches vs IBJJF?

It was a really good experience. I felt a lot of pressure and to be honest that was my biggest challenge on that night. Afterwards I felt I could have done much better… It wasn’t myself up there..
Comparing both styles, Metamoris and IBJJF, I like submission-only a lot but we can’t have tournaments for everyone in this style. Imagine a 3000-competitor tournament with sub-only? So I think one compliments the other.

A lot of people are talking about Caio as he did not defend his Pan title and isn’t defending his Worlds title this year. How is his health and do you think he will compete again?

I’m sure he will compete again and that’s what I pray for! But I think right now is not the best time. We spoke a lot last week because he was struggling himself to train so he could fight, but he is not well… A couple of days he had to stop training because he was feeling really bad, the other day he couldn’t even finish teaching a class..
Right now is time for him to recover, start thinking about his future. Better to see him out this year but healthier and stronger for the next season.

Is there anything you would like to add?

When he’s not consumed by the Jiu-Jitsu lifestyle at his home in San Jose, CA, black belt Samir Chantre is participating in normal aspects of life. It’s crazy, I know.

How does he have time to work as a referee at many IBJJF tournaments throughout the year, compete in the same tournaments and more, work as director of the academy, teach at the academy, earn medals in the largest tournaments like No-Gi Worlds and still have time to woo a lady into marrying him?

We may never know.

Osvaldo Augusto Queixinho is a member of the Caio Terra Association who competes at many tournaments throughout the year. He almost always reaches the podium and places in the absolute divisions as only a lightweight. This past year has been a large step into his career as a black belt competitor and one could consider it his launch into the top level.

Martial arts became part of his life at the young age of eight. By the age of sixteen, he had earned a brown belt in judo. Jiu-Jitsu found its way into his schedule when he was seventeen years old as he trained with the Carlson Gracie Team.

In 2010 Quiexinho was promoted to black belt by his professors Augusto Tanquinho Mendes and Rafael Formiga Barbosa. The following year he moved to the United States, specifically San Jose, CA, to join the Caio Terra Association at the Institute of Martial Arts.

At the beginning of this year Queixinho placed third at the European Championship. While competing at the various IBJJF city international open championships he picked up momentum in San Francisco then earned gold at the Las Vegas Spring Open, New York Summer Open, Las Vegas Summer Open, American Nationals and then he closed out with teammates to win the Pan No-Gi.

He also won the Abu Dhabi WPJJC West Coast trial and earned a ticket to compete at the 2014 main event in Abu Dhabi, United ArabEmirates. Last month at the No-Gi World Championship, he placed second in his black belt division. He will compete in the light/middle division at the 2013 BJJ Pro League on Sunday, Dec. 8.

Samir started his Jiu-Jitsu journey at the age of nine in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

He received his black belt in June of 2009 from Alan Moraes of Carlson Gracie Team but now trains at the Institute of Martial Arts in San Jose, CA. When he competes, which is often, he represents the Caio Terra Association.

In 2010 Samir won the World No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu Championship winning his first black belt world title. Later, he won the 2012 and 2013 Pan Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship as well. An eight-time American Nationals champion, Samir can be found on the mats whether competing or working as a referee.

Samir competes in the light-featherweight and featherweight categories but has won the open division at the Las Vegas Open in 2012 proving that technique can overcome strength.

Last year Samir competed in the BJJ Pro League and received the bronze medal. This year he will be in the four-man category of rooster/light-feather/feather and hopes to take home the gold.

The 2013 ADCC event in Beijing, China is still developing its roster as the existing athletes shift around. With a little over a month left to go, the October 19-20 championship is settling down fast.

In the -66kg division, black belt ADCC veteran Jeff Glover is out due to injury so the committee must work on another invitation to a lucky athlete. Glover’s exciting and entertaining style will be missed and we hope he recovers soon.

Black belt Samir Chantre from Caio Terra Association has expressed interest as well as brown belt Gianni Grippo from Marcelo Garcia JJ/Alliance. Both have been in contact with the organization and while the committee has a list of alternates on their mind, the suggestions of the public are always welcomed.

Who do you think should be in the -66kg division at the 2013 ADCC alongside names such as the current champion Rafael Mendes, Rubens Cobrinha, Justin Rader, Joao Miyao, Mark Ramos, Marcio Andre and more?

This weekend on April 20, the 2013 IBJJF New York International Open will be happening at the City of College of New York, Nat Holman Gymnasium. The one day tournament reached its full capacity a record eight days before the scheduled registration closure date. We will see you there this weekend if you were able to secure your spot in time or if you are close enough to make the visit to see a high-level tournament in the heart of New York. Many of our local GMA members like Vitor Shaolin Academy, Marcelo Garcia Academy, Renzo Gracie Academy, Alliance NYC and more will be well-represented so make sure you come out to support the local scene. The 2013 IBJJF Las Vegas International Spring Open will be the first installment of its kind. As the Las Vegas Summer Open has gathered enough competitors, IBJJF has decided to add another competition during the year. Registration is still open for this one-day tournament on Saturday, April 27 but only until April 19 so reserve your spot right away. The event will be in the Sport Center of Las Vegas, home of all the local Jiu-Jitsu tournaments, right off the famous Strip.
