The black belt Augusto “Tanquinho” Mendes has left the operating table and is back in his room.

His brother, Bruno “Tanque” reassures friends and fans: “Everything went well and he’s already talking. Tomorrow he will leave the hospital.

About the recovery, Tanque said it can be shorter than 5 to 8 months, the initial projection: “This term is the standard time. It all depends on how his body will respond to this first phase and then how he will engage in rehabilitation. Knowing him the way I do, I know that will be dedicated as he is dedicated to Jiu-Jitsu. But only next week we will be more accurate about it. ”

The surgery Tanquinho went through was not that simple, explained his brother: “He had a hernia and didn’t know about it, and last week, during a practice, this hernia burst. It is pushing two vertebrae, which in turn are pushing the medulla. So they will take a bone graft from the hip to put in the vertebrae with a prosthesis and screws to reinforce the place.

Just before entering the operating room, Tanquinho thanked: “I wanna say thank you to everybody who is sending scraps, messages and good energy for my surgery! I’ll answer and thank you all later! I was very happy for the affection from all of you around the world! With God, I will take all the good vibes that you sent me for my surgery! Thank you, my family, girlfriend, friends and fans. You give me great motivation to get over it!”.

O irmão Bruno “Tanque” tranquiliza amigos e fãs: “Correu tudo bem e ele já está até falando. Amanhã ele terá alta”.

Quanto à recuperação, Tanque diz que o prazo pode ser menor do que de 5 a 8 meses, previsão inicial: “Esse prazo é conservador. Tudo vai depender de como o corpo dele irá responder a essa primeira fase e depois de como ele vai se empenhar na reabilitação. Conhecendo-o do jeito que conheço, sei que vai se dedicar como se dedica ao Jiu-Jitsu. Mas só semana que vem teremos o prazo mais exato”.

A cirurgia por qual Tanquinho passou não foi simples, como explicou antes o irmão: “Ele tinha uma hérnia, que nem sabia que tinha e na semana retrasada durante um treino essa hérnia estourou. Está pressionando duas vértebras, que por sua vez estão pressionando muito a medula. Então ele vai tirar um enxerto de osso do quadril para colocar nas vertebras junto com uma prótese e parafusos para reforçar o local”.

No Facebook e no Twitter, já está em andamento uma campanha de apoio a Tanquinho, apelidada de #campanhavoltalogotanquinho.

Pouco antes de entrar na sala de cirurgia, Tanquinho agradeceu os votos: “Queria deixar aqui os meus agradecimentos a todos que estão mandando recados,mensagens e boas energias para a minha cirurgia! Irei responder e agradecer a todos depois! Fiquei muito feliz pelo carinho de todos vocês ao redor do mundo! Junto com Deus, irei levar todas as boas vibrações que vocês me mandaram para a minha cirurgia! Obrigado familia, namorada, amigos e fãs. Vocês me dão uma grande motivação para superar isso!”.

Of course, the Soul Fighters athlete loved facing the four-time world champion – unlike Cobrinha, as you read here on GRACIEMAG.com yesterday.

“I got a takedown, he got the sweep and then I swept. I watched the match over and noted how we never landed in that 50/50 guard, so it was a much better final to watch than the one against Rafa, for example. Going down in weight paid off; hitting the sauna was worth it. I nearly made it, only an advantage point separated me from the gold, but it was worthwhile. But I still haven’t decided whether I’ll stay at featherweight; I’m going to rest, eat right, and decide later,” explained Tanquinho, who lost the final to two-time world champion Rafael Mendes on advantage points.

At team Soul Fighters, Cobrinha caused a bit of a stir with his interview, where he gave credit to Tanquinho but alleged to be the victim of evasive maneuvers during the match and asked that there be more penalties awarded.

Augusto’s brother, Bruno “Tanque”, defended the win over Facebook.

“Obviously statements made by a four-time world champion and legend of the sport will echo more than those from other people. And I and my team have great respect for the opinion of Cobrinha, who is someone who was always my idol and did a lot for Jiu-Jitsu’s evolution as a sport.

“I agree when Cobrinha spoke about the rules, that they can make fights more dynamic. But I didn’t understand what he meant to say by ‘influence’ over the referees. Tanquinho benefited from that? The match was broadcast live over the internet and is on video-sharing sites… well, not then nor know did I read or hear any comments about Cobrinha being robbed or Tanquinho having benefited.

“Each person has their way of fighting, and if they look at Tanquinho’s background they’ll see he gets the finish in most of his matches. And frankly speaking, without being a hypocrite, finishing is great, but the reality is that finishes happen in the preliminary matches. Once the elite or super elite athletes come through the funnel, you can count on your fingers the finishes. The only one who can talk is named Roger Gracie, who gets everybody.

“I don’t want anyone to take me wrong, since what I teach and preach to my students is that they have to fight for the finish, but high performance evens matches out to the point where to finish someone has to make a gross tactical mistake during the match.

“And, from the moment Jiu-Jitsu became a sport onwards, people have lost a bit of the notion of what Jiu-Jitsu really is. Jiu-Jitsu is much more than a sweep, armbar, reversal, spider-guard and whatnot… Why don’t I hear any world champion saying self-defense is the most important part of Jiu-Jitsu, that it is the foundation for everything that’s being done today?

“There are ‘BJJ’ black belts who’ve never done a self-defense position in their life. Why isn’t anybody criticizing that?

“What is most worrying is when Cobrinha said he watched other matches and saw that four of them were in 50/50 guard. Anyone who watched the event and watches championships knows how most matches today end up in this position. That truly is worrying. Before it came about, the 50/50 was a resource for those who kow how to use this type of guard; these days everyone wants to do it, but the truth is that most of them don’t know how, and that’s why matches end up stalling, because it really is a stalling position.

“I agree that something needs to be done, but not just by the sport’s board of directors. It mainly the Jiu-Jitsu teachers who are the first to shout from the corner – Hang on, one minute to go!

“Serious schools like Cobrinha’s own preach and appreciate attacking Jiu-Jitsu, but most of them teach (and will continue to teach) what we’re seeing today.

O atleta da Soul Fighters, claro, gostou da luta contra o tetracampeão mundial – diferente de Cobrinha, como você leu ontem aqui no GRACIEMAG.com.

“Dei uma queda, ele raspou e eu raspei. Revi a luta e notei que não caímos nenhuma vez naquela guarda 50/50, então foi uma luta muito melhor de se ver do que a final contra o Rafa, por exemplo. Compensou ter descido de peso, a sauninha valeu a pena. Quase cheguei lá, faltou uma vantagem para o ouro, mas valeu. Mas ainda não decidi se virei peso-pena não, vou descansar, comer direito e decidir depois”, explicou Tanquinho, que perdeu a final nas vantagens para o bicampeão Rafael Mendes.

Na equipe Soul Fighters, repercutiu bastante a entrevista de Cobrinha, em que o tetracampeão mundial reconheceu os méritos de Tanquinho, mas alegou ter sido vítimas de manobras evasivas durante a luta e pediu mais punições.

“É óbvio que declarações de um tetracampeão mundial e uma lenda do esporte vão ter um eco maior do que a da maioria das pessoas. E em meu nome e da minha equipe respeito muito a opinião do Cobrinha, que é um cara que sempre foi ídolo e fez muito para a evolução do Jiu Jitsu como esporte.

“Concordo quando o Cobrinha fala das regras, que as mesmas tornem as lutas mais dinâmicas. Mas não entendi o que ele quis dizer com ‘influência’ sobre a arbitragem. O Tanquinho foi beneficiado? A luta passou ao vivo na internet e está em sites de compartilhamento de videos…., bem, nem na hora, nem agora li ou ouvi um comentário sobre o Cobrinha ter sido roubado ou o Tanquinho beneficiado.

“Forma de lutar cada um tem a sua, e se pegarem o histórico do Tanquinho vão ver que ele finaliza a maioria das suas lutas. E falando francamente, sem ser hipócrita, é muito bonito finalizar, mas na realidade as finalizações ocorrem nas lutas preliminares, quando afunila e só sobram os atletas da elite ou superelite, conta-se nos dedos as finalizações. O único que pode falar chama-se Roger Gracie, que vai e pega todo mundo.

“Não quero que me interpretem mal, pois o que ensino e prego aos meus alunos é que tem que lutar para pegar, mas o alto rendimento iguala a luta a tal ponto que para finalizar tem que haver um erro grosseiro de tática ou posicionamento durante a luta.

“E, do momento que o Jiu Jitsu se transformou em esporte, as pessoas perderam um pouco do que é realmente Jiu-Jitsu. Jiu-Jitsu é muito mais do que raspagem, armlock, inversão, guarda-aranha e afins… Por que não vejo um campeão mundial falar que a defesa pessoal é a coisa mais importante do Jiu-Jitsu? Que ela é a base que origina tudo que é feito hoje?

“Tem faixa-preta de ‘BJJ’ que nunca fez uma posição de defesa pessoal na vida, por que ninguém critica isso?

“O mais preocupante foi quando Cobrinha disse que olhou as outras lutas e viu que quatro delas estavam na 50/50. Quem acompanhou o evento, e acompanha os campeonatos sabe que a maioria das lutas de hoje fica nesta posição. Isso é realmente preocupante. Antes, quando surgiu, a 50/50 era um recurso de quem sabe usar este tipo de guarda, hoje em dia todo mundo quer fazer, mas na verdade a maioria não sabe, e por isso as lutas ficam travadas, porque realmente é uma posição que trava.

“Estou de acordo que alguma coisa tem de ser feita, mas não só pelos dirigentes do esporte, mas principalmente pelos professores de Jiu-Jitsu, os primeiros a berrar do córner: – Segura, falta 1 minuto!

“Escolas sérias como a do próprio Cobrinha pregam e valorizam um Jiu-Jitsu para a frente, mas a maioria ensina (e vão continuar ensinando) isso que estamos vendo hoje.
