A noite dessa quinta-feira, dia 28 de março, definiu mais dois vencedores do GP do Bellator. O evento de número 94 da organização, realizado em Tampa, na Flórida, foi palco para a final do campeonato de leves, com a polêmica vitória de Dave Rickels sobre Saad Wad, e do GP dos meio-pesados, com a vitória de Emanuel Newton sobre Mikhail Zayats. Ainda na noite, quatro brasileiros se apresentaram e apenas um saio do cercado amargando um revés.

Na primeira luta principal da noite, o barbudo Dave Rickels, após sua “Spilberguiana” caminhada ao lado de um dinossauro articulado, adentrou o cage para enfrentar Saad Wad pela final do GP de pesos leves. A luta foi bastante movimentada, com chutes, socos e quedas para todos os lados. Mas o ponto alto do embate foi nos últimos segundos do segundo assalto, quando David conseguiu encaixar uma sequência sobre Wad, que caiu ao soar do gongo. Na dúvida entre o árbitro ter terminado o round ou a luta, vitória para o “Homem das cavernas”, contabilizada aos 5min do R2.

Na seguinte e última luta do card, Emanuel Newton enfrentou Mikhail Zayats pelo título do GP dos meio-pesados. Com o primeiro round ganho por Newton e o segundo por Mikhail, o tiroteio de golpes teve o terceiro assalto para definir o campeão. Com um knockdown e quase uma finalização na guilhotina, o round levemente equilibrado foi para as mãos de Emanuel, que se sagrou campeão do GP de sua divisão.

Ainda na noite tivemos as vitórias dos brasileiros Sérgio Junior, finalizando Trey Houstoun no katagatame, Rodrigo Ratinho, mostrando rapidez nos punhos e eficiência no solo para superar Ronnie Mann nos pontos, e Augusto Sakai, peso pesado que mostrou muita contundencia nas joelhadas para vencer Rob Horton por nocaute técnico.

Uníco brasileiro a sofrer com um revés na noite, Bruno Carvalho ainda chegou perto de finalizar seu oponente, James Edson Berto, no armlock. Preso ao braço de seu adversário, Carvalho não conseguiu prosseguir com o arrocho e, ao escapar da posição desconfortável, Berto pulou para o pé de Bruno, finalizando o brazuca na chave de tornozelo.

Em busca de somar mais uma vitória à sua sequência de duas consecutivas, Bruno Carvalho chega ao Bellator com um singelo desejo: Ser tornar campeão.

Ele, que assinou contrato com a organização em novembro do ano passado, faz sua estreia hoje, contra James Edson Berto, na edição de número 94 do evento americano.

GracieMag falou com o lutador, e ele dividiu conosco suas considerações sobre sua vida pessoal e sua próxima luta. Confira abaixo a entrevista, feita pelo nosso repórter Erik Fontanez, com Bruno Carvalho.

GracieMag: Como está sendo estrear pelo Bellator? Muita pressão por conta disto?

Bruno Carvalho: Eu me sinto honrado em lutar num evento grande como o Bellator. Mas eu não me sinto nem um pouco pressionado, porque eu faço o que eu amo, que é lutar.

Você acha que seus adversários no Bellator serão muito mais difíceis do que nos eventos anteriores que participou?

Os atletas do Bellator tem um nível muito alto. Mas eu confio nas minhas habilidades e em tudo que eu já conquistei na minha carreira. Será um grande teste para mim e eu estou muito animado com esse passo que dei na minha carreira.

O que você tem a dizer sobre seu oponente, o James Edson Berto?

Eu tenho respeito por ele, ele é muito experiente. Além disso, eu acho que esta luta não vá para as mãos dos jurados. Tenho certeza que o embate vai terminar em nocaute ou finalização.

Além do seu adversário, quais outros atletas você acha que serão complicados de enfrentar na sua divisão?

Todos os atletas da minha categoria são talentosos e duros. Mas eu não prevejo nenhuma luta a não ser aquelas que o Bellator agendar para mim. Eu acredito no meu potencial e eu sei que, um dia, eu estarei apto a lutar pelo cinturão do Bellator.

Como você pretende vencer a sua luta na noite desta quinta-feira?

Eu serei cauteloso, mas sempre buscando impor minha estratégia contra meu oponente. Eu acredito que vou nocautear mais uma vez. Eu estou sempre preparado para finalizar, mas minha maneira favorita de vencer uma luta é com um nocaute.

A cidade de Tampa, na Flórida, traz aos fãs do MMA a edição 94 do Bellator. Como atrativo, duas finais de  GPs e um card recheado de brasileiros cascas-grossas.

Pelo GP dos leves, Saad Awad enfrenta David Rickels. O vencedor do embate enfrenta a pedreira Michael Chandler pelo cinturão da divisão. Já entre os meio-pesados, Emanuel Newton encara Mikhail Zayats valendo a credencial para desafiar o cinturão do eslovaco Attila Vegh.

Quatro brasileiros estão no card, e três debutam na organização. Rodrigo Ratinho, que estreou com derrota para Hiroshi Nakamura, no Bellator 64, busca a reabilitação contra Ronnie Mann. Sérgio Junior, conhecido lá fora como Luis Melo (aquele da “dança da motinha”), pisa pela primeira vez no cercado cinza e terá Trey Houston pela frente. Outro estreante é o invicto Augusto Sakai, que vai para dentro de Rob Horton.

Outra fera que faz sua estreia é o promissor Bruno Carvalho, curitibano que vem de duas vitórias consecutivas no Brasil. Ele enfrenta James Edson Berto.

Boasting a two-fight win streak, lightweight prospect Bruno Carvalho enters the Bellator cage with a one thing on his mind: Become a champion.

Carvalho inked a multi-fight deal with the Viacom-owned company last November and he plans on making the best of this new opportunity. His first test will come against James Edson Berto at Bellator 94, a match-up Carvalho said will certainly end with a finish.

GracieMag.com spoke with the fighter recently, and he shared his thoughts on his new home, his upcoming fight and what he’s prepared to do on Thursday night’s Bellator card.

GracieMag.com: What does it mean for you to make your Bellator debut? Is there a lot of pressure that comes with fighting there?

Bruno Carvalho: I feel very honored to fight in this event as it is one of the biggest shows globally.  I don’t feel any pressure because I am doing what I love.

How much more difficult do you anticipate the fighters to be in Bellator than your previous competition?

The Bellator athletes are high level guys, and I know that going in.  But I feel confident in my skills, and what I have accomplished previously in my fight career.  It will be a great test for me and I am excited for this new chapter in my life.

How do you break down James Edson Berto as an opponent?

I respect him as he has a lot of professional experience.  I also believe that this fight will not end in a decision or points.  I feel certain it will end with a KO or submission.

Not to look past your opponent, but who else do you find being a difficult challenge in your division?

Everyone in the weight division is tough and talented.  So I am looking forward to any fights that the Bellator promotion would like to match for me.  I believe in my potential and I know one day soon I will be ready to fight and beat the champion of Bellator.

How has working with CM Systems helped you in getting to this high point in your career?

I became a full and complete fighter after working with CM System.  Everything that the academy did is very important for my growth as an MMA fighter.  I am here now in Bellator as a result of the training I received at my school along with their contacts.  I am very grateful for my experience with CM System.

How do you plan on winning on Thursday night? Also what’s your favorite way to finish?

I will be cautious but I will look to impose my will and strategy on my opponent.  I believe in another KO in my career.  I am always prepared to do a submission, but my favorite way to win is always by KO.

Bellator Fighting Championships signed Brazilian lightweight Bruno Carvalho to compete when the promotion moves to Spike TV in 2013, the company announced late Tuesday.

Carvalho’s manager, Nima Safapour, verified the signing and said the young prospect secured a multi-fight deal with the organization. The Bellator deal was one of many offered to the fighter, according to his management.

“Bruno Carvalho is one of the hottest prospects out of South America,” Safapour told Graciemag.com. “He had multiple offers going into the Bellator opportunity.

“We are confident that some of Bruno’s greatest fights are going to happen under the Bellator umbrella.”

Carvalho (8-2) was last seen earning a unanimous decision over Maicon Bastos under the Iron Fighting Combat promotion in Brazil. He’s also seen action in Japanese promotions such as DREAM and Shooto.

The 155-pound fighter has no scheduled debut, but his manager said he’ll see his first Bellator fight in the first quarter of next year.

Bruno Carvalho has been the talk of the Thai boxing town in Brazil for some time now, even holding a win over UFC ace Edson Barboza.

With a record of 8 wins and 2 losses in MMA, and often fighting opponents with a considerable size advantage, the featherweight is now looking to greener pastures, now that his last outing showed he has undergone a marked evolution in the grappling department.

Last Saturday Carvalho, who is both trainer and student to the UFC’s Cristiano Marcello, put to his gentle-art skills to good use in outpointing a game Maicon “Gladiador” Bastos at Iron Fight, an MMA event held in Feira de Santana, in the Brazilian state of Bahia.

“I feel it was a good fight. Maicon brought it on. It’s like he’s made of rubber, and he had good boxing, not to mention he was a real warrior,” said the fighter who put in a dazzling performance, sinking omoplatas, armbars and americanas that looked to be fight-stoppers.

“I couldn’t get the finish. I was just missing a few details in the positions, but I’m already working on them. I demand a lot of myself and don’t like making mistakes,” said Bruno, who some in the Brazilian press feel has what it takes to make a move to the UFC.

“I’ve been working hard to get into the UFC. I’m training to be ready when the opportunity arises. I know my time will come,” he added.

Bruno Carvalho é um atleta gabaritado no muay thai há tempos, a ponto de já ter vencido em pé o astro do UFC Edson Barboza.

Após vitórias no Brasil, Bruno (8v, 2d) tem mostrado uma evolução grande em seu Jiu-Jitsu, e já parece maduro para voos mais altos no MMA.

No último sábado, o treinador e aluno de Cristiano Marcello pôs em prática suas habilidades na arte suave para vencer Maicon “Gladiador” Bastos, no evento de MMA Iron Fight, em Feira de Santana, na Bahia.

“Acho que foi uma boa luta, o Maicon valorizou bem o combate – ele parecia uma borracha, mostrou um bom boxe, além de ser muito guerreiro”, disse o lutador que impressinou pela boa exibição, encaixando armlocks e omoplatas, além de trabalhar na guarda e chegar à montada.

“Não consegui finalizar, faltaram pequenos detalhes nas posições, mas já estou trabalhando isso. Eu me cobro muito e não gosto de errar”, garantiu Bruno, que para alguns colegas da imprensa brasileira é um dos atletas com potencial para ganhar em breve sua primeira chance no UFC.

“Venho trabalhando forte para entrar no UFC, estou treinando para estar pronto quando a oportunidade aparecer. Eu sei que minha hora vai chegar”, completou.

Having taken to Twitter to plead for a spot at UFC Rio, Jiu-Jitsu black belt Cristiano Marcello saw his request fulfilled in the form of a matchup against Sweden’s Reza Madadi at the HSBC Arena this October 13.

The Rio de Janeiro native was a participant on season 15 of the TUF reality show and ended up getting knocked out by Sam Sicilia on what was his octagon debut. Now, he’s seeking his first win in the UFC.

To do so, the former Chute Boxe rep is training balls to the wall in Curitiba, facing a daily rote he has dubbed “the room of terror”.

“I’m training with my physical conditioning coach, who’s turning out to be a great trainer. It truly is a room of terror. Truth is, we’ve been doing some precious work on improving my explosiveness and agility. I’m stoked. Functional training together with weights has been great,” said the Jiu-Jitsu professor.

“I’ve been practicing everything I can—lots of Thai boxing with Bruno Carvalho [an M-1 fighter], wrestling with Marcelo Zulu and grappling with my black belt Ocimar Costa,” added the brown belt bronze medalist at the 1999 and 2000 World Championships.

Always remembered for the triangle he used to subdue an enraged Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennet behind the scenes at Pride FC, Cristiano remains confident in his Jiu-Jitsu, which is useful in any danger situation he may find himself in.

“The truth is that in the dressing room at Pride I believed in my Jiu-Jitsu, and you have to believe you can do it. When you find yourself in an extreme situation, what works is what you trained; it’s your subconscious at work. My whole life I trained refined Jiu-Jitsu, and I managed to impose it in most of my fights; especially during that moment of danger,” he recalled, before explaining how he plans not to get caught off guard at the UFC event in Rio.

“You have to understand that in MMA the fight starts on the feet. Of course I plan to impose my game and take it to where I’m most confident, show my Jiu-Jitsu. Of course that’s what I want, but I’ll have to go through all kinds of turbulence to get there. I just hope I can put him through some turbulence first. He’s got sharp wrestling, doesn’t come from a striking background, but I know he’s going to want to keep it standing. Well I’m not going to avoid that. In the end, though, I want to impose my Jiu-Jitsu and welcome him with my triangle or armbar,” he revealed.

Depois de pedir via Twitter uma chance no UFC Rio, o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Cristiano Marcello foi atendido e vai encarar o sueco Reza Madadi na HSBC Arena, 13 de outubro.

O carioca participou do reality show “TUF 15” e acabou nocauteado por Sam Sicilia, naquela que foi sua estreia no octagon. Agora, ele busca a primeira vitória no UFC.

Para isso, o ex-chuteboxer está treinando a todo vapor em Curitiba, enfrentando diariamente um covil apelidado de “quarto do terror”.

“Estou treinando com meu preparador físico, que está se revelando um grande treinador. Com certeza isso é um quarto do terror, na verdade a gente está fazendo um trabalho valioso para aumentar minha explosão e agilidade. Estou amarradão, o treino funcional junto com o ferro está ótimo”, disse o professor.

“Tenho treinado tudo o que posso – bastante muay thai com o Bruno Carvalho (lutador do M-1); wrestling com o Marcelo Zulu e a parte de chão com meu faixa-preta Ocimar Costa”, completou ele, que foi medalha de bronze nos Mundiais de Jiu-Jitsu de 1999 e 2000, na faixa-marrom.

Sempre lembrado pelo triângulo aplicado num furioso Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennet nos bastidores do Pride, Cristiano segue confiante em seu Jiu-Jitsu, útil em qualquer situação de perigo.

“A verdade que ali no vestiário do Pride eu acreditei no meu Jiu-Jitsu, e você tem de acreditar que é capaz. Quando você está numa situação extrema, o que vai funcionar é o seu treinamento, é o subconsciente que age ali na hora. Minha vida inteira treinei um Jiu-Jitsu refinado, e consegui impor isso na maioria das minhas lutas, e em especial naquele momento de perigo”, lembrou o casca-grossa, que não quer se afobar no UFC no Rio.

“A galera tem de entender que no MMA a luta começa em pé. Lógico que pretendo impor meu jogo e ir para a parte onde sou mais confiante e lá mostrar meu Jiu-Jitsu. Logicamente é isso que desejo, mas vou ter de passar por aquela turbulência antes. Só espero que eu faça a turbulência nele antes. Ele é um cara afiado no wrestling, não é oriundo da trocação, mas já sei que ele vai querer ficar na parte em pé. Bom, eu não vou fugir disso. No fim das contas, no entanto, quero imprimir meu Jiu-Jitsu e dar as boas-vindas com meu triângulo ou meu armlock”, entregou.

Also-Strikeforce fighter Gegard Mousasi was successful in defending his Dream light heavyweight title this Saturday in Japan. The fighter took just 3:29 minutes to overcome Hiroshi Izumi via technical knockout.

Also featured on the card, big name Japanese fighters Tatsuya Kawajiri, Hideo Tokoro and Hiroyuki Takaya all won their respective bouts, while the lone Brazilian, Bruno Carvalho, dropped a unanimous decision to Eiji Mitsuoka.

“He fights with his right leg forward, despite him not being a south paw. He does that to go for the takedown. He’ll stand and bang but he surely won’t want to do that against Bruno. To tell you the truth, he’s quite predictable and likes going for the takedown. I believe we’re going to win this one,” says Cristiano in analysis.

However, Carvalho’s hopes are that, through Dream, the doors will open for him to fulfill a great dream of his.

“Everyone knows what Bruno’s striking skills are like and he’s never had an opportunity to fight in K-1, the world’s main striking event. So we’re taking the reverse route. A good performance at dream and – who knows? – maybe he’ll get called up for K-1. It would be a dream come true for Bruno,” says Cristiano.

And there are another two fighters from Cristiano’s team to see action in the coming days: Daniel Acácio will be at Clube de Luta and Junior Baby will be fighting at Max Fight.

“I don’t know the exact numbers but over these two years of the team’s existence we’ve had over 200 fights and come up big in over 80% of them. Our money’s on the young guys loaded with desire. Now we’ll have this international bout, our first athlete in a major world event, and we’re in hot pursuit of our objectives. We’ll have plenty to celebrate this year yet,” says Cristiano in closing.
