O atleta do UFC Charles do Bronx, que agora luta na categoria dos penas, e o seu treinador Ericson Cardoso terão um final de semana cheio em Ubatuba, quando ministram um seminário de Jiu-Jitsu em prol do Projeto Social O Lutador do Futuro.

Na sexta-feira pela manhã, Charles visita a Escola Municipal José Belarmino Sobrinho, no bairro do Puruba, onde as crianças do projeto estudam e à noite visita o Projeto Social para um treino com a criançada e para fazer a entrega de doação de equipamentos do seu patrocinador, a Pretorian Hard Sport.

No sábado acontecerá o seminário de Jiu-Jitsu a partir das 14h, com duração de três horas, com Charles Oliveira e seu treinador Ericson Cardoso. A atividade é em prol da manutenção do prédio do Projeto Social O Lutador do Futuro.

Os 50 primeiros inscritos ganharão camiseta alusiva Conduta do evento.

UFC fighter Charles do Bronx, who is moving down to the featherweight division, and his trainer Ericson Cardoso will have a busy weekend in Ubatuba, São Paulo state, where they will hold a Jiu-Jitsu seminar for outreach project Lutador do Futuro.

On this coming Friday morning, Charles will pay a visit to José Belarmino Sobrinho public school, in the Puruba neighborhood, where the children in the project study during the day, and at night he’ll visit the project to train with the kids and deliver equipment donated by his sponsor, Pretorian Hard Sport.

Saturday at 2 pm the three-hour Jiu-Jitsu seminar with Charles and Ericson will take place. Funds raised will go to the maintenance of the building housing O Lutador do Futuro project.

The first 50 to sign up will get T-shirts made specially for the event.

UFC on Versus 5 is all set to go down in Milwaukee this Sunday, and Charles do Bronx is one of the headliners. The Jiu-Jitsu brown belt is known to put on lively fights, and once again he’ll have an opponent who’s no easy task, in Donald Cerrone.

After the result from his June 27 fight against Nik Lentz was overturned, Charles do Bronx took no rest. On August 14 the brown belt will be right back in the mix at UFC on Versus 5, facing Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, who is riding a four-fight win streak. Interviewed by GRACIEMAG.com, Bronx doesn’t let the Pennsylvania Athletic Commission that annulled his seventh triumph off the hook.

You admit you threw an illegal knee but the fight wasn’t stopped and you tapped out Nik Lentz. On the occasion you took the “fight of the night” prize. What are your thoughts about them changing the result to a no contest?

Shoot, what happened is that they gave me the win. The right thing to do was to have the ref stop the fight, at most penalize me a point, and let the fight start again. But no, the fight continued. I know it’s not the UFC’s fault, but it is the Athletic Commission’s; I think they were too hard on me. Jon Jones threw an illegal elbow, the judge stopped the fight, the athlete didn’t return to fight but they gave Jon Jones the win. Jon Jones threw an illegal knee on Shogun, everybody saw it, but they gave the win to Jon Jones. So I don’t understand why they went an overturned the result on my fight. But that’s alright, I’m happy with what’s going on in my life, on to the next one. It’s all in the past and now I’m focused on Cerrone.

Once again you’re going to fight in the UFC with almost no breaks between bouts. Is that good or bad?

I’m fine, focused. When I joined the UFC I said I wanted to fight the best, and that’s exactly what I’m doing. Cerrone is one of the top guys in the division and that’s precisely what I want. I’m ready and happy for every fight I get, especially against the toughest guys in the division. I’m going to work double time in preparing for this next fight compared to the last one and I’m glad for the opportunity.

What are your thoughts on Cerrone?

He’s taller than me, which could make it easier to shoot in on his legs for takedowns. I also don’t think he’s that good standing, so we’ll see, I have to feel how the fight goes when I’m in there. He has a good ground game, with 12 submissions in 15 wins. It’ll be a tough fight and I’m dying to get in there. He wants to beat me; I want to be him; so it’ll go off.

How’s your training going?

I’m still training here in Brazil with the kids at Bronx’s Gold Team. Between the 25th and 30th I’ll head to the United States to train with Macaco. I’ll be ready once again.

Depois de ter o resultado da luta no dia 27 de junho anulado, contra Nik Lentz, Charles do Bronx não descansa. No dia 14 de agosto, no UFC on Versus 5, o faixa-marrom de Jiu-Jitsu já tem novo compromisso. Ele encara Donald Cerrone, o Cowboy, que vem numa série de quatro vitórias. Num bate-papo com o GRACIEMAG.com, o lutador comenta o desafio e não alivia a decisão da Comissão Atlética da Pennsylvania, que anulou seu último triunfo.

Você admite que aplicou uma joelhada ilegal, mas a luta continuou e você finalizou Nik Lentz. Na ocasião, recebeu até o prêmio pela melhor luta da noite. O que achou de depois terem mudado o resultado para no contest?

Pô, o que aconteceu é que eles me deram a vitória. O certo era o juiz parar a luta, no máximo tirar um ponto meu, e voltar o combate. Mas não, a luta continuou. Sei que não é culpa do UFC e sim da Comissão Atlética, mas acho que pegaram pesado comigo. O Jon Jones deu uma cotovelada ilegal, o juiz parou e o atleta não voltou, mas deram a vitória para o Jon Jones. O Jon Jones deu uma joelhada ilegal no Shogun, todo mundo viu, mas deram a vitória para o Jon Jones. Então não entendi essa anulação justamente na minha luta. Mas tudo bem, estou feliz com o que vem acontecendo na minha vida e vamos para a próxima. Isso já passou e agora estou focado no Cerrone.

Mais uma vez, você luta no UFC quase sem descanso entre um combate e outro. Isso é bom ou ruim?

Estou bem, focado. Quando entrei no Ultimate, disse que queria lutar contra os melhores, e é exatamente isso o que está acontecendo. O Cerrone é um dos tops da categoria e é exatamente isso o que eu quero. Estou pronto e feliz por cada luta que vem, principalmente contra os caras fortes da categoria. Vou me preparar para essa luta em dobro em relação à última e estou feliz por mais essa oportunidade.

O que acha do Cerrone?

Ele é mais alto, pode facilitar entrar nas pernas para colocar para baixo. Também não acho ele tão bom na trocação, então vamos ver, tenho que sentir a luta na hora. Ele tem o chão bom, com 12 finalizações em 15 vitórias. É uma luta dura e vai ser louco lá dentro. Ele quer me vencer, eu quero vencê-lo, então vai pegar fogo.

Como segue o treinamento?

Sigo treinando aqui no Brasil com a molecada na Bronx’s Gold Team e lá para o dia 25 ou 30 viajo para os Estados Unidos para trabalhar com o Macaco. Estarei pronto mais uma vez.

Jon Jones bears the light heavyweight crown at 23 years of age. José Aldo Junior boasts the featherweight belt at 24. At 21, Charles de Oliveira will next month fight at UFC on Versus 4 with a record of 14 wins and a single loss.

Charles “do Bronx” has plenty of time to polish up the tools he needs to become yet another young title holder, specifically in the division Brazilians had the least hopes of winning: the lightweight division. Brazil’s “Sensei Sportv” television show traveled to Vicente de Carvalho on the outskirts of Guarujá, São Paulo state, and discovered how the nickname “do Bronx” came about. There the TV crew dropped in on the Bronx’s Gold Team brown belt and was graciously welcomed into the fighter’s home. The segment by Mario Filho clearly conveys the collective power of a family.

“My father and mother would collect cardboard to pay sign-up fees for me at championships. Once, my family held an Easter bingo so that I could fight abroad – and they only brought in enough money for a one-way ticket. I had to win, otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to pay the return trip,” reveals Charles de Oliveira, sporting prescription glasses, the soft gaze of humility, and displaying charisma and good cheer.

On the program he explains how it was actually out of necessity that he had to pursue the prize. He also reveals an enormous passion for animals, his dream of one day owning a farm, his love of São Paulo soccer club Corinthians, and, of course, his take on his last three fights in the UFC and his expectations for his upcoming fight with Nik Lentz.

Also featured on the program, reporter Ana Hissa took the red-eye from Canada to Belém do Para, Brazil, to unearth the story behind Lyoto Machida’s flying front kick. The kick that all at once sent Randy Couture into retirement and resurrected the 1980’s classic “Karate Kid” movie in the 21st century remains alive and well, as popular as ever.

“They can say what they want, but what really matters is that Lyoto won using karate!” asserts Master Yoshizo Machida.

“Meu pai e minha mãe catavam papelão para que eu pudesse pagar a inscrição no campeonato. Uma vez, a minha família fez um bingo de Páscoa para eu poder lutar no exterior. E eles conseguiram arrecadar o dinheiro só de ida. Eu tinha que vencer, senão eu não voltava pra casa”, revela Charles de Oliveira, com óculos de grau, humildade no olhar, carisma e muito bom humor.

A fera explica que, além da técnica, tinha que buscar o prêmio motivado pela necessidade mesmo. Também nesta edição, sem perder tempo, Ana Hissa fez a conexão Canadá – Belém do Pará e trouxe um raio-x completo do chute voador de Lyoto Machida. O chutão que, de uma só vez, aposentou Randy Couture e quase transformou o filme “Karate Kid” num clássico do cinema mostrou que o Dragão está voando, mais forte do que nunca.

“Podem falar o que quiserem, mas o que importa é que Lyoto venceu usando o karate!”, conclui o mestre Yoshizo Machida.

In a recent GRACIEMAG.com interview with Charles “do Bronx” Oliveira, the UFC lightweight said he was awaiting word on his next challenge, he just didn’t know at what event it would be.

It won’t be at UFC Rio, as the fighter had hoped. But since what’s important is keeping busy, Charles will now face Nik Lentz at UFC on Versus 4 in Pittsburgh.

The Jiu-Jitsu brown belt was riding a 14-fight win streak when a loss in his last outing to Jim Miller brought it to a halt, while Lentz (21w-3l-2d) hasn’t lost in four fights.

Em entrevista recente ao GRACIEMAG.com, Charles “do Bronx” Oliveira disse que aguardava o próximo desafio, apenas não sabia em qual evento do UFC seria.

Não vai ser no UFC Rio, o que o lutador sonhava. Mas como o que importa é estar em ação, Charles luta contra Nik Lentz no UFC on Versus 4, em Pittsburgh.

O faixa-marrom de Jiu-Jitsu vinha numa série de 14 triunfos, mas perdeu a invencibilidade justamente na última apresentação, contra Jim Miller. Já Lentz (21v-3d-2e) não perde há quatro lutas.

A recent revelation in the world MMA picture, Charles do Bronx awaits a berth at UFC Rio. And he has good reason to believe his time may come, seeing as there are new matchups in the works.

“I still don’t know who the opponent will be or at what event, but I’m really hopeful it will be at UFC Rio. Nothing’s set in stone, but I’m training. I can’t say I deserve it more than the others, but at this moment it’s the dream of all Brazilian fighters, and I want it too,” he tells GRACIEMAG.com.

“There are matchups in the works, and they’re telling me to be in shape. Whenever they say, ‘Kid, it’s you,’ I’ll be ready.

Charles’s last fight – his third in the UFC – brought an end to his unbeaten record, having lost to Jim Miller. The fighter guarantees he is more mature now, since his first setback.

“I was riding a 17-fight winning streak and thought I was learning more with each win. Truth is – I learned much more from this loss. I saw how we’re not invincible and that we have to train more to become even better with each day. We have to learn, whether it’s from someone older, younger, black belt, white belt. . . We never know everything, and that’s how we manage to get better. To be the best, you have to train a lot.”

With the introduction of the featherweight division to the UFC, Charles would be able to drop a weight class. However, what the fighter says he wants is the lightweight belt. He doesn’t think it will be easy, but he has found inspiration in another young fighter to do it: light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.

“I feel my division is really this one. I’ll leave it in the hands of my coaches, Ericson and Macaco, but I like fighting at 70 kg. Jon Jones managed to become champion at 23, and I am now 21. I’m still young compared to the rest of the guys in the division and I have much to learn, but I still have a lot to show in the UFC,” he says in closing.

Uma das grandes revelações do MMA mundial, Charles do Bronx segue na espera por uma vaga no UFC Rio. E o lutador tem motivos para acreditar que o sonho é possível, já que vem luta nova por aí.

“Ainda não sei qual vai ser o adversário e nem em qual show vai ser, mas estou com muita expectativa de ser no UFC Rio. Não tem nada certo, mas estou treinando. Não digo que mereço mais que os outros, mas, no momento, esse é o sonho de todos os lutadores brasileiros, e eu quero também”, comenta ao GRACIEMAG.com.

“Tem luta vindo por aí, e disseram para eu estar treinado. É só a hora de eles falarem: ‘moleque, é você’, estarei pronto.

No último combate, a terceira apresentação no UFC, Charles acabou perdendo a invencibilidade contra Jim Miller. O lutador garante estar mais maduro após o primeiro revés.

“Estava numa série de 17 triunfos e pensava que a cada vitória aprendia mais. Na verdade, aprendi muito mais com essa derrota. Vi que não somos invencíveis e que a cada dia temos que treinar e nos aprimorar mais. Temos que aprender, seja com o mais velho, mais novo, faixa-preta, faixa-branca… Nunca sabemos tudo e assim conseguimos ser melhores. Para ser o melhor, tem que treinar muito.”

Com a introdução da categoria pena no UFC, Charles teria condições de descer de peso. No entanto, o lutador quer mesmo o cinturão no peso leve. Não considera uma missão fácil, mas, para isso, se inspira em outro jovem lutador, o campeão meio-pesado Jon Jones.

“Acho que a minha categoria é essa mesmo. Deixo isso na mão dos meus preparadores Ericson e Macaco, mas gosto de lutar no 70kg. O Jon Jones conseguiu ser campeão aos 23 anos, e hoje tenho 21. Ainda sou um moleque no meio do pessoal da categoria e tenho muito o que aprender, mas também tenho ainda muito o que mostrar no Ultimate”, encerra.
