On Saturday, Dec. 6 Renato Tavares traveled to his affiliate academy Triton Fight Center in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma for his yearly seminar.

The event gathered a whopping 130 students together. Seventeen of them were black belts including Triton Fight Center head instructor Piet Wilhelm, Renato Tavares himself, James Foster of GMA Foster BJJ in Seattle, WA, Mike Budnik, Gina Franssen and others. During the seminar Renato taught various back-takes.

Along with the seminar came the belt ceremony. In all, there were over twenty promotions for those who were deserving of new belt ranks.

As part of the twenty, three special promotions came in the form of black belts to Reed Haji, Tim Holman and Omar French.

Omar was amazed and although super cool he says it was also super scary. “It was amazing! Not so much for getting the rank but because your instructors trust you to represent them. It was insane amazing.”

GMA member James Foster of Foster BJJ in Kent, WA will be at GMA Triton Fight Center on Saturday, Feb. 8 for a seminar. Set for 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., the active competitor black belt will be teaching his competition-tested techniques.

The Texas-based Girls in Gis organization made its way to the Midwest over Labor Day weekend with over eighty ladies landing in Oklahoma. GIG was at  GMA Triton Fight Center in Broken Arrow, a suburb of Tulsa on Saturday, August 31.  It was hosted by brown belt Summer Krause-Wilhelm, the co-owner and instructor at Triton Fight Center and currently the highest ranked female in the state of Oklahoma.

Participants traveled from across Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Texas and even as far away as Mexico. In total, eighty-four females ranging in ages from six to sixty-four, shared the mats for three hours. Twenty-seven academies were represented and fourteen females experienced their first introduction to Jiu-Jitsu. Participants also raised a tremendous amount of in-kind donations for Domestic Violence Intervention Services, a Tulsa based women’s and children shelter.

The Triton Female Fight Team and Summer, were tremendously vital to the success of this GIG event. Summer’s natural leadership abilities and expertise on the mats shined through as she lead the group through a series of technical Jiu-Jitsu sequences, choke holds and submissions. The event was both educational and enjoyed by all.

Giveaway donations for the Girls in Gis physical challenges and raffles were provided by Defense Soap, Century Martial Arts, Neocell, Just a Girl in a Jiu-Jitsu World, Girlzilian Femjitsu, American Grappling Federation, Girlz BJJ Lifestylez, Massage Envy, Gi Freak and Real Pretty Flowers. Generous contributions included gis, patches, gift cards, apparel, nutritional products, magazines and competitor entry fees.

This tremendous event in support of women and girls in Jiu-Jitsu was the first of its kind in the state of Oklahoma.  Judging by the enthusiastic turnout,  it won’t be the last. A big thank you to the Triton Fight Center, Summer Krause-Wilhelm, Piet Wilhelm, Triton Fight Center Female team and all of the contributing sponsors. Oklahoma and the Midwest are definitely on the map now  for female grapplers!

GMA academy Triton Fight Center in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma is known for bringing BJJ black belts from all over for seminars at their academy, but this time on April 19 and 20 the academy’s head instructor, black belt Piet Wilhelm, hosted an incredible gathering of 10 black belts from different academies to share the mat with their knowledge and experience.  Black belts from all around the country traveled to be a part of this event.

The two-day seminar was Jiu-Jitsu galore with instruction from Forrest Flanary a.k.a. “Classy Grappler” (Team Isreal Gomes) from Houston, TX, Keith Owen (Team Pedro Sauer) from Boise, ID, James Foster (Team Giva Santana) from Seattle, WA, and Renato Tavares (Team Carlson Gracie Sr.) from Vero Beach, FL.

Also among these were black belts Christian Derr (Jean Jacques Machado BJJ) from Owasso, OK, Kentrick Coleman(Renato Tavares BJJ) from Del City OK, John Church (Triton Fight Center BJJ) from Muskogee, OK, Mike Harris (Triton Fight Center BJJ) from Mount Vernon, MO and Rafael Santiago (Guto Campos BJJ) from Amarillo, TX.
