Bill Cooper teaches an armlock technique

William Cooper almost never uses his real name.

He is best known as Bill “The Grill” Cooper, one of the most acomplished American black belts of his generation.

Recently, he was on the cover of GracieMag #190, teaching the Armlock Dossier.

Here is Bill again, now in video, teaching one of the techniques featured in the printed magazine.

Nick Diaz was a no-show for his supermatch against Bráulio Estima at the World Jiu-Jitsu Expo this Saturday in Long Beach, California. Nevertheless, the quality of the bouts on the rest of the card made up for the let-down.

Jeff Glover surprised Pan 2012 champion Caio Terra, outpointing him 10 to 6. In a sequel to their encounter at this year’s Pan, this time Kron Gracie managed to outdo Victor Estima. The substitute for Kayron Gracie, who pulled out due to injury, Pan 2012 champ Lucas Leite saw his momentum halt at Rafael Lovato by a score of 2-0. In a showdown between veterans, Bill Cooper saw the nod from the judges and took the win over Nino Schembri. Now in the all-female, No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu, match, Kyra Gracie got the upper hand over Strikeforce fighter Alexis Davis by 5-0.

Já na luta feminina, de Jiu-Jitsu sem kimono, Kyra Gracie marcou 5 a 0 contra a lutadora do Strikeforce Alexis Davis.

O dia 12 de maio promete uma overdose de arte suave em Long Beach, na Califórnia, onde acontece a World Jiu-Jitsu Expo. Por apenas 15 dólares, vai ser possível aprender técnicas com os supercampeões Roger Gracie, André Galvão, Robert Drysdale, Rodrigo Comprido e Ronaldo Jacaré. Também ocorre a primeira edição do Spring Open, organizado pela IBJJF. No entanto, as maiores disputas do dia ficarão por conta das superlutas, que, dos EUA, Brasil ou qualquer parte do mundo, poderão ser assistidas ao vivo pela internet.

Na principal atração, o atual campeão da superluta do ADCC, Bráulio Estima, encara a fera do UFC Nick Diaz. Campeão do Pan 2012, Kayron Gracie troca forças com Rafael Lovato. Kron Gracie, que perdeu para Victor Estima no Pan 2012, vai ter a nega. Um dos atletas que mais impressionaram nos dojos da IBJJF em todos os tempos, Nino Schembri volta à ação contra Bill Cooper. Para completar, Kyra Gracie enfrenta a fera do MMA Alexis Davis, do Strikeforce, enquanto o campeão mundial sem kimono Caio Terra enfrenta Jeff Glover.

If you can’t make it to Long Beach, California, on the 12th of May, you won’t get to polish up your gentle-art skills under the expert eyes of the likes of Roger Gracie, André Galvão, Robert Drysdale, Rodrigo Comprido and Ronaldo Jacaré. Nor will you get to put on a show of your own at the inaugural IBJJF Spring Open, another monumental attraction to feature at the World Jiu-Jitsu Expo. But that doesn’t mean you’re excluded from the action at the Long Beach Convention Center altogether.

The all star cast on the supermatch card likely has UFC president Dana White burning with envy, and you can watch all the Gi and No-Gi action streamed live over the internet via mobileblackbelt.tv.

While the main event is a must-see, with UFC superstar Nick Diaz putting his black belt and incisive rubber-guard to a stern test in a No-Gi bout with ADCC superchampion Bráulio Estima, the rest of the card is no less riveting:

Three of the Jiu-Jitsu royal family’s top competitors will be defending the Gracie name: Pan 2012 champ with the tentacular guard Kayron Gracie will have his work cut out for him in the gi against Rafael Lovato Jr., the man who made history when he became the first black belt to win the European Open, Pan-American, Brazilian National, and World Championships all in the same year; the son of gentle-art legend Rickson Gracie, Kron Gracie will don his gi and seek revenge for his loss to Victor Estima at this year’s Pan-American Championship; while multiple world- and ADCC-title holder Kyra Gracie will have a bout of grappling with Alexis Davis, an MMA fighter on the Strikeforce roster.

Rounding out the six-match card are two intriguing rematches: Nino Schembri, a decorated world champion who is further distinguished by his knockout of Kazushi Sakuraba during Pride FC’s heyday, will be looking for redemption for his 2010 defeat at the hands of Paragon BJJ’s Bill Cooper (watch it here); and sparks are bound to fly in the No-Gi grudge match between 2007 No-Gi world champion Jeff Glover  and the only four-time winner of the No-Gi World Championship, Caio Terra.

The good news keeps coming for the Jiu-Jitsu fans with a chance at checking out the inaugural World Jiu-Jitsu Expo this coming May 12 in Long Beach, California. This 1st of May two more supermatches were added to the program—with two fair-faced grappling aces and two wizards of the gi.

Kyra Gracie, a sport Jiu-Jitsu star decorated many times over and three-time ADCC champion, will shed her gi yet again to take on Alexis Davis, a fighter on the Strikeforce roster trained by Cesar Gracie.

Now in sport Jiu-Jitsu, with the gi, the veteran Nino “Elvis” Schembri will be making his return against the no-less-dazzling Bill Cooper, a bout that wouldn’t surprise this journalist if it ends 65 to 61 for either one of the two stars.

Also on the menu for the Jiu-Jitsu Expo, the IBJJF Special Spring Tournament promises heaps of action. Already confirmed for the competition are fighters the likes of Otávio Sousa, the winner of the NY Open absolute division, as well as Rodrigo Simões, Gustavo “Sirizinho”, Ricardo “Franjinha”, Magid Hage and plenty of others.
