Sometimes, you have to do a job that you don’t typically want to do. But you do it because, well, it’s best for you.

That’s basically what’s going on with Mark Hunt and his upcoming “UFC: Brisbane” main event against Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva. He may not have wanted to fight Silva before, but Hunt was presented the opportunity to fight him and reluctantly accepted the bout against his American Top Team colleague.

“It’s just one of those things – it’s an opportunity,” Hunt said during a press conference to promote the UFC card. “He’s a top-four fighter [and] I don’t think I’m in the top 10 at all. It’s a good opportunity for me … This is a sport and we both want to be the best fighters on the planet and it’s just another step forward for me. It’s one of those things, it’s a job. To be the best fighter you have to sometimes fight people.

“It is what it is.”

The two have shared an affiliation with the Florida-based MMA gym for quite some time now, and affiliates from said gym rarely fight each other. Hunt admitted that he said in previous interviews the he refused to fight “Bigfoot” unless it was for a title.

But it’s part of the job, Hunt said, and beating Silva is something that has to take place. At the end of the night, it won’t matter where the win puts Hunt – just as long as he’s not still ranked outside the top 10.

“For me, it doesn’t matter where it places me,” he said. “If ‘Bigfoot’s’ No. 4 and I beat him, just put me somewhere above him.”

Heavyweights are heading down under.

A fight between Mark Hunt and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva is expected to headline an upcoming UFC card in Australia, according to a Tuesday report from Combate.

The Hunt-Silva tilt is verbally agreed to, according to the report, and is expected to be a “Fight Night” card for Saturday, Dec. 21.

Hunt (9-8) is coming off a loss to Junior dos Santos at UFC 160, a match that saw JDS land a spinning-heel kick that led to the TKO over the Samoan fighter. The loss ended a four-fight winning streak for Hunt, as well as an unlikely rise to becoming a heavyweight title contender.

Silva (19-8) is also coming off a loss, a TKO at the hands of heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez on the same card Hunt fell to dos Santos. The title shot for Silva was earned after knocking out Travis Browne and Alistair Overeem in consecutive fights.

UFC officials are yet to announce the Dec. 21 card.

LAS VEGAS — Cain Velasquez made quick work of Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, earning a technical knockout of the Brazilian in the first round of their UFC 160 main event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday evening.

Velasquez timed a one-two combination that dropped Silva, and the champion continued his assault with ground-and-pound strikes, finishing the fight at the 1:21 mark of the opening.

“The feel was the same,” Velasquez said at the post-fight press conference, comparing the defense of the title to winning it in his previous outing. “Just to go out there and win.”

The win for the champ locks up a fight with former title holder Junior dos Santos, the fighter Velasquez lost the belt to at the first UFC on Fox event in November 2011.

UFC President Dana White said it’s a “no-brainer,” and a third fight between Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos will happen next. The UFC executive did not, however, give a timeline for when the fight will happen.

In defeat, Silva protested the loss, explaining that he was hit with numerous illegal strikes, adding that the fight was stopped prematurely.

“The fight was stopped too early,” Silva said following the TKO. “It’s clear that I took several illegal blows to the back of my neck.”

In reaction, Velasquez said his punches were all Legal. He added that the referee told him anything to the back of the ear was a legal strike, which is where Velasquez felt he hit his opponent.

“The ref came in and told me that anything to the back of the ear was all good,” said the defending champion.

With the win, Velasquez improves his record to 12-1 and has won three in a row. Silva drops his tally to 18-5 and ends his winning streak at two.

“Cigano” throws spinning heel kick, knocks out Mark Hunt

Junior dos Santos earned another shot at the heavyweight title, knocking out Mark Hunt in the third round of their co-main event at UFC 160.

The former heavyweight champion landed several punches on Hunt, a renowned striker, but it was a spinning heal kick late in the fight that secured the win for dos Santos at 4:18 of the final round.

“He’s very dangerous,” dos Santos said in his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan. “I have to respect him.”

The former UFC champ showed he still has the power in his hands, landing a heavy punch on Hunt that sent him down. Hunt recovered, but dos Santos landed more strikes as the round went on. The opening round finished with dos Santos earning the frame.

“Cigano” continued to use punches to score points in the second round, this time utilizing the jab more. Hunt, however, landed a flurry that shook dos Santos, backing him against the cage. The fight went to the ground when dos Santos took Hunt down, landing strikes from half guard and side control. The two stood up just before the time of the round expired.

The third round showed Hunt beginning to slow down and dos Santos capitalized. Landing more strikes as the round went on, dos Santos threw a spinning heal kick that knocked his opponent out cold, sealing the win for the former champ and a shot at the heavyweight title.

“I want that so bad,” dos Santos said of earning a chance at the title again. “I believe I will be the champion again, and I’ll do my best to get there.”

With the win, dos Santos gets back on the winning track after losing to Cain Velasquez at UFC 155.

Teixeira continues climb up the ranks, stops Te Huna in first round

Glover Teixeira stopped James Te Huna with a first0round with a submission at the UFC 160 Pay-Per-View.

Teixeira locked on a guillotine after pulling guard, finishing his opponent at the 2:38 mark of the opening frame.

Teixeira said in his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan that he couldn’t believe the feeling from earning the win, and admitted that being congratulated by former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson for the win was euphoric.

With the UFC 160 victory, Teixeira wins his fourth in a row in the Octagon and 19th overall. Te Huna loses his first fight in his last five outings.

Grant stops Maynard in the first round

T.J. Grant came closer to meeting UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson, getting the first-round technical knockout over Gray Maynard in their main card fight.

Grant caught the former No. 1 contender with a right hand that shook Maynard, backing him against the cage. The victor continued to land strikes until the referee stepped in to put a stop to the action.

“I practiced that for like the last eight weeks,” Grant said following the win. “I knew what he was going to do.”

Dana White said that the winner of this fight would face Henderson for the title, and now it appears that Grant is the new No. 1 contender to the lightweight crown.

Cerrone punishes Noons in three-round decision

Donald Cerrone went the distance with former Strikeforce contender K.J. Noons, earning a unanimous-decision win to open up the UFC 160 Pay-Per-View.

Cerrone put on a striking clinic early, establishing an edge in the stand-up in the first round.

Throughout rounds two and three, Cerrone continued his aggressive striking, cutting Noons open and earning the unanimous nod with scores of 30-27, 30-27 and 30-26.

UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez will defend his title in a rematch with Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva at UFC 160 in Las Vegas, according to a report on Tuesday evening.

The bout will headline the card at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 25.

Velasquez (11-1) regained the UFC heavyweight title in his last outing by defeating the man that took it from him, Junior dos Santos, at UFC 155 last December. The bout was mostly a one-side affair with Velasquez pounding away at dos Santos, giving the Brazilian heavyweight the first loss of his career.

Silva (18-4) shocked the MMA world by knocking out heavy favorite Alistair Overeem in his last bout at UFC 156 this past Feb. 2. Bigfoot opened up the third round by letting go a number of strikes that stunned Overeem and put an end to the Dutch striker’s hopes of facing Velasquez with the win.

Velasquez beat Silva in their first meeting at UFC 146 in a fight where the then-former champ brutalized his counterpart on the way to a technical knockout in the first round.

In addition to the Velasquez-Silva title fight, Overeem and dos Santos will face each other on the same card, according to a report. The two were supposed to face each other when dos Santos was champion, but a failed drug test prior to the match-up suspended Overeem for nine months and scratched any plans the UFC had at the time to put on the fight.

News of the UFC 160 match-ups was announced on Fuel TV’s UFC Tonight show.

Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva broke the MMA-betting bank last Saturday when he beat Alistair Overeem at UFC 156.

A heavy underdog, the Brazilian shrugged off the naysaying and knocked out the Dutch odds-on favorite early in the third round, a win that put him in the top five in the UFC heavyweight rankings.

In the aftermath of his triumph, a number of names were raised in speculation regarding his next opponent, but the Giant from Paraiba, Brazil is still unsure of whom he will be facing. Bigfoot makes it abundantly clear, however, that if he had his druthers it would be the divisional champion, Cain Velásquez, who defeated him last May at UFC 146.

“If I had to pick an opponent, it would be Cain Velasquez,” Silva said. “When we fought, I practically didn’t get a chance to fight. This would be a great rematch, even if it’s not for the belt. I really respect Cain, but it would be a great fight for me professionally.”

Bigfoot added that he learned from his loss to the heavyweight champion. Even if the UFC is mentioning Daniel Cormier as a possible challenger to Velasquez’s throne, Bigfoot still hopes to again face the champ, saying that this time the outcome will be different.

“I learned a lot from that loss [and] I feel I’ve become a much better fighter since that fight,” he said. “I ended up making the mistake of not sticking to the game plan my trainers put together for me, and I paid for it. Going into the fight focused and with the right strategy, the outcome of a rematch could be really different.”

LAS VEGAS — Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar competed in a competitive main event, but it was Aldo who came out on top, defending his featherweight title at UFC 156 in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

Aldo went the distance with the former lightweight champion, scoring points on the feet and stuffing takedowns on the way to earning the judges’ decision with scores of 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47.

“It was a very difficult fight,” Aldo said, adding how tough of an opponent Edgar was.

Aldo controlled the center of the cage for the first part of the fight. As he typically does, Edgar moved quickly around his opponent, but Aldo was able to find spots and land punches, bloodying up his opponent’s nose. The champ landed leg kicks that swiftly slowed down Edgar, giving Aldo the round as time expired.

Aldo continued landing strikes as the second round began. A single-leg takedown by Edgar was stuffed by the champ, and Aldo persisted with leg kicks that landed, one of which made edgar fall. Edgar landed a punch as his opponent threw another leg kick, and the the champion fell, but was quickly back to his feet and won the round.

Edgar attempted a takedown as the third round started, but Aldo stopped it. The Brazilian looked more fatigued as the round continued, but landed a front kick to the face of Edgar. The challenger began to land more leg kicks as the end of the round came, and also landed a right cross within the final 30 seconds of the frame, earning him the round.

Edgar continued to use the leg kick in the fourth round, and Aldo landed a spinning back kick. Edgar pressured the champ, constantly moving and working punch-kick combinations. At one point, Edgar clinched Aldo and slammed him to the ground. Aldo got back up, but his opponent worked strikes in the clinch. Time expired with the two at center-octagon.

In the final round, Aldo attempted a flying knee and followed that up with a strong jab. Edgar took control of the center of the cage and worked more leg kicks in, as well as some punch combinations. Aldo also landed counter strikes that stunned Edgar, but the challenger kept pushing forward. Time expired and both fighters raised their hands in victory before the judges’ decision.

“I keep finging myself in this situation,” Edgar said following the loss. “Congrats to Jose. He fought a great fight.”

With the win, Aldo improves to 22-1, defending his UFC title for the fourth consecutive time. In defeat, Edgar drops to 15-4 and has lost three straight fights.

Rashad Evans vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira topped Rashad Evans and earned the unanimous decision in the UFC 156 co-main event on Saturday.

Nogueira kept the fight on the feet, stopping most of Evans’ takedowns with the judges scoring the bout 29-28 across the panel.

Evans and Nogueira measured each other as the fight began. Nogueira controlled the center of the octagon, as his opponent attempted various kicks. Evans landed a flurry, backing “Lil’ Nog” up, and scored a takedown shortly after. The two completed the round on the feet with Evans coming out the winner of the frame on GRACIEMAG’s scorecard.

Nogueira controlled the center of the octagon again as the second round started. The Brazilian worked the jab and followed it up with straight lefts that found their marks on Evans. The TUF Season 2 winner attempted a takedown, but Nogueira prevented the fight from going to the ground. Time expired with Nogueira edging his opponent in the round.

The third round showed more of the same from Nogueira, as he worked the one-two combination. Evans responded with forward-moving flurries before accidentally poking his opponent in the eye. Once the fight resumed, Nogueira continued with his favored punch combination, throwing in an occasional body kick. Evans was unable to land a takedown for the remainder of the fight, and the two clinched towards the end of the fight.

Nogueira has now won two consecutive UFC bouts.

Alistair Overeem vs. Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva

Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva came back in the third round, earning the technical knockout with an upset over Alistair Overeem on Saturday night at UFC 156.

Down two rounds to none, Bigfoot opened up in the final frame and landed punches in bunches to score the TKO at 0:25 of the round.

“I told him at the press conference, ‘I’m going to make you respect me, brother,'” Silva said in his post-fight interview.

Overeem closed the gap early, clinching with Silva and landing knees on the Brazilian against the fence on numerous occasions. Silva attempted to shoot in for a takedown, but Overeem stuffed it and clinched again. The Dutch striker kept his hands low, and landed leg kicks that found their marks. Overeem slipped a punch and landed a counter uppercut before time in the round expired, winning the round.

After a clinch in the early part of the second round, Overeem took Silva down and worked from top position. Overeem scored points with ground-and-pound, while Silva defended and landed short elbows and hammer fists. Bigfoot attempted to get up, but Overeem overpowered him and kept the Jiu-Jitsu practitioner on his back. The fight briefly came back to the feet, and Silva landed one significant strike, but Overeem ended up taking the round.

Silva came out in the third round swinging punches and landed several. Wobbled, Overeem backed up against the fence and Silva struck him with numerous punches before the Dutch heavyweight went falling the ground, unconscious. The referee stepped in to put a stop to the bout at that at that time.

Silva is now a winner of two consecutive UFC fights after losing his debut to Cain Velasquez.

Jon Fitch vs. Demian Maia

Demian Maia dominated Jon Fitch with his grappling, earning a unanimous decision at UFC 156 in Vegas.

Maia stifled Fitch for three rounds and the judges saw it in his favor with 30-27 scores across the board.

Maia immediately went for the takedown, getting Fitch to the mat before securing the back. Fitch stood with his opponent on his back, and Maia continued clinching onto him while landing punches and looking for the choke. Maia remained on the back, taking Fitch down every time he tried to stand up, earning the round on GRACIEMAG’s scorecard.

The second round remained on the feet for the first 40 seconds, but Maia took his opponent down again. The fight returned to feet momentarily before Maia scored another takedown and got Fitch’s back again. With a body triangle secure, Maia worked to sink a choke, but was met with stiff defense from his opponent. Maia continued to work for the submission while landing strikes through the end of the period.

Maia pressured Fitch some more as they entered the third round. The Brazilian scored another takedown, but Fitch defended and brought the fight back to the feet. The American attempted a guillotine choke after putting Maia on his back, but the Brazilian was able to escape and bring the fight standing before scoring another takedown. Maia secured his opponent’s back one more time before time expired.

Maia is now 3-0 since dropping down to 170 pounds.

Joseph Benavidez vs. Ian McCall

Joseph Benavidez defeated Ian McCall by unanimous decision in the opening Pay-Per-View fight at UFC 156.

Benavidez was superior in the stand-up game, landing several combinations to earn the judges nod with scores of 29-28, 29-28 and 29-28.

The first round had Benavidez scoring with punches early on, wobbling McCall on two occasions in the first half of the frame. After two accidental low blows by Benavidez, he continued his offensive push and scored points with strikes in the stand-up to win the round.

McCall began the second round with a cut over his hairline. Benavidez was strong on the feet again, landing combinations of leg kicks and punches halfway through the round. McCall, however, got the fight to the ground and controlled his opponent’s back, landing strikes from that position. Benavidez got the fight to the feet again, but it was McCall that appeared to win the round.

Benavidez opened the round with a big strike that staggered McCall. Benavidez continued landing effective combinations, but was taken down for a brief moment. McCall moved into side control, but his opponent was able to bring the fight back to a standing contest. While there, Benavidez landed another mid kick and stuffed a takedown before time expired.

All 22 fighters weighed in for their UFC 156 fights at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas on Friday, making the bouts official for Saturday night’s fight card.

UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo weighed in for his title defense at 145 pounds, while challenger Frankie Edgar tipped the scale one pound lower at 144 pounds.

Rashad Evans and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira each weighed in for their bout at 206 pounds, making the co-main event official for tomorrow.

Alistair Overeem came in for his heavyweight bout with Antonio Silva at 264 pounds, while his Brazilian opponent weighed 262 pounds.

Undercard fighter Dustin Kimura weighed 139.5 pounds, and he will not attempt to cut any more weight. He will be fined 20 percent of his fight purse, which will go to his opponent, Chico Camus, according to the UFC.

Edwin Figueroa and Francisco Rivera came in over their 135-pound weight limit. Each of those fighters has two hours to cut the weight and make 135 pounds.
