Caio Terra levantou a torcida na final dos galos no Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu Sem Kimono de 20015, no último domingo, 8 de novembro, com mais uma plástica finalização. O professor carioca radicado na Califórnia usou uma variação da baratoplata, golpe popularizado por Rafael “Barata” Freitas, para eliminar em menos de um minuto o japonês Yusuke Honma.

Foi a oitava medalha dourada de Caio no evento da IBJJF, que ele vem vencendo desde 2008.

Caio contou ao GRACIEMAG que o golpe não saiu com a perfeição que ele queria durante a final:

“A chave que apliquei na semifinal (contra Jorge Santistevan) foi bem mais bonita, mas eu não consegui finalizar com ela e mudei para a chave de braço. Eu tinha ensinado essa variação da baratoplata duas semanas antes do Mundial Sem Kimono, na minha academia, então quando a oportunidade surgiu, eu sabia que não poderia desperdiçar. Caso contrário, meus alunos iriam dizer que não funciona”, sorriu Caio.

Caio Terra awed the crowd at the roosterweight final of the 2015 Worlds No-Gi. He finished Yusuke Honma with a baratoplata to win his 8th gold medal since 2008. GRACIEMAG was able to capture the entire sequence. With the help of Caio himself, here are the details of the technique.

Caio revealed that the set up he used in the final was not his favorite: “The one I did in the semifinal [against Jorge Santistevan] was much more beautiful, but I could not get the finish, so I changed to an armbar. I taught that same technique two weeks before the championship, so when it happened during the match, I knew I could not lose it otherwise my students would say it doesn’t work,” reveals Caio.

Rafael Barata Freitas will be in the 2013 BJJ Pro League on Dec. 8

An athlete known for his shoulder lock submission and enthusiastic personality, Rafael Barata Freitas is a top black belt athlete. Whether he’s dancing, singing or rapping his presence is always made known.

Having found martial arts at an early age the progression of disciplines brought him to Jiu-Jitsu. aAs a young teen he developed the lifestyle he has lived until now.

As a purple belt his famed “Baratoplata” submission was founded. First a bicep slicer but since the move was illegal in competition for a purple belt, he went back to the mats and learned how to adapt the submission into a shoulder lock instead. He still uses the move today at  the highest levels of black belt and even in his professional MMA fights.

In 2011 Barata won the Pan American Championship and later went on to take home silver in 2012 as well as the bronze medal at the World Championship that same year.

His matches are always exciting as his capoeira past often shows through in his dynamic style. Barata is set to compete in the lightest four-man category of the BJJ Pro League on Dec. 8 at the Long Beach Walter Pyramid.
