Current Strikeforce and K-1 World GP champion Alistair Overeem is one of the world’s top fighters these days. The Dutchman’s next challenge is to face off with Fabrício Werdum at the Strikeforce heavyweight GP in June.

Meanwhile, besides his usual fare of grueling training, the Overeem is reaping the rewards of success, in this case meaning a dinner with his country’s royal family.

“A great experience. I had lunch with Prince Willem-Alexander and princess Maxima. It was the most important lunch of my life!” he posted on Twitter.

Do you figure Dilma Rousseff or Barack Obama, the presidents of two of the greatest MMA superpowers in the world – Brazil and the USA, respectively –, may one day hold an audience with their nations’ famous fighters?

Atual campeão do Strikeforce e do K-1 World GP, Alistair Overeem hoje é um dos principais lutadores em todo o mundo. O próximo desafio do holandês é contra Fabrício Werdum, em junho, no grand prix de pesos pesados do Strikeforce.

Enquanto isso, além de treinar duro, Overeem colhe os frutos do sucesso. Reconhecido em seu país, foi recebido pela família real.

“Uma grande experiência. Almocei com o príncipe Willem-Alexander e a princesa Maxima. O almoço mais importante da minha vida!”, postou em seu Twitter.

Será que Dilma Rousseff ou Barack Obama, presidentes em duas das principais potências do MMA – Brasil e EUA, respectivamente – também vão receber os grandes campeões algum dia?

The video was a flash fever on Facebook (check out minute 4 in the video below). Whether you agree or not with what Wand had to say, the point is that the former Pride FC champion felt the need to teach the outspoken wrestler a lesson. He played the part of a master speaking to a young disciple.

The point that emerges, as I see it, is that these days MMA is loaded with trainers, but masters, those ones who orient the fighter to adhere to strict discipline, are few and far between.

I don’t know much about Sonnen’s story, but it seems like he lacked someone to set boundaries for him in recent times. On the other hand, Wanderlei was always an extremely disciplined fighter, ever since his days at Chute Boxe academy in Curitiba.

We’ve seen several teams where fighters, besides being the single focus of the team, are their own managers. Rather than being guides, their coaches behave as though they were mere employees. Is that the sort of professionalism the sport needs? Would a Formula 1 racer be able to command the team?

There’s no doubt MMA is a spectacle, and the remarks made play into that. The fighters are true stars, but lacking in that dose of discipline that the martial arts provide us with through the person of a master, many of the stars quickly take on a luster of their own.

The Jiu-Jitsu experience shows us how the lack of a good master can cause us to fall face first, both in the ring and in life.

O vídeo virou febre passageira no Facebook (reveja abaixo, no minuto 4). Concorde ou não com o jeitão e as palavras de Wand, o ponto é que o ex-campeão do Pride sentiu que precisava ensinar algo ao wrestler americano. Deu uma de mestrão, falando a um jovem discípulo.

O ponto que emerge, ao meu ver, é que hoje o MMA está repleto de treinadores, mas mestres, daquele tipo que orienta o lutador dentro de uma disciplina rígida, pouquíssimos.

Pouco sei da história de Sonnen, mas parece que faltou alguém que lhe desse limites nos últimos tempos. Por outro lado, Wanderlei sempre foi um lutador extremamente disciplinado, desde os tempos de Chute Boxe, em Curitiba.

Temos vistos diversas equipes em que o lutador, além de ser o foco único do time, é o próprio gerente. Em vez de orientadores, seus técnicos comportam-se como simples funcionários. Seria esse o tipo de profissionalismo de que o esporte precisa? Será que na Fórmula 1 o piloto seria capaz de chefiar a equipe?

Não há dúvidas de que o MMA é um show, e declarações polêmicas fazem parte disso. Os lutadores são verdadeiras estrelas, mas sem aquela dose de disciplina que a arte marcial nos alimenta através da figura do mestre, muitas das estrelas vão se tornando cadentes rapidamente.

A vivência no Jiu-Jitsu tem nos mostrado que a falta de um bom mestre é capaz de levar qualquer um a bater de cara na lona, tanto nos ringues, como na vida.
