Back in Brazil, Leonardo Santos is celebrating a victorious trip to England. At a time when the UFC dominates the MMA market, the black belt saw action at BAMMA, a promotion that has started to take off in the international scene. At the event held in Wembley, Léo used his Jiu-Jitsu to overcome Jason Ball and notch his ninth win (9w-3l).

“The plan was to get the takedown, but my timing was off and he kept me at bay. But the striking work I did paid off. I fought well standing until I got my timing for the takedown down. I controlled him on the ground and got back mount. The only thing missing was the finish,” he says.

“I didn’t feel well at the end of the second round, that threw me off a bit. I don’t know if it was my diet or the weight cup. That just made me appreciate the win even more,” he adds.

MMA is now in the grip of the UFC, especially since Strikeforce’s acquisition by Zuffa, the UFC’s parent company. Léo sees BAMMA’s growth in a positive light.

“We need more events; these days UFC is pretty much all there is and anyone who’s not there is unemployed. BAMMA was held at Wembley Arena, a traditional English venue, and it was really well done. The house was packed and they really took to the Brazilians. Murilo Ninja, who lost unfortunately, was treated like a hero,” says the black belt, who now may get a shot at the promotion’s belt.

“I have two offers to fight in Brazil, but they said that if I won this fight I’d get a shot at the title against Rob Sinclair on September 10.”

On a return to the gi, Léo doesn’t discard the possibility but, for now, his main focus is MMA.

“I don’t think it’s likely that I compete in Jiu-Jitsu now. To fight MMA I have to be 100% immersed in that, as I would to be successful in Jiu-Jitsu too. I’m taking the MMA patch, but I train in the gi all the time. I’ve already trained in the gi with the gang since this fight, and I never skip training in the gi. Later perhaps I’ll compete in the master division, maybe at the International. Now if I get an invite to the ADCC, like I have in the past, it would be a true honor. I train No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu all the time and I’m prepared,” he says in finishing.

De volta ao Basil, Leonardo Santos comemora a passagem pela Inglaterra. Em tempo de domínio do UFC no mercado do MMA, o faixa-preta combateu no BAMMA, organização que começa a crescer no cenário internacional. No evento realizado em Wembley, Léo usou o Jiu-Jitsu para bater Jason Ball e chegar à nona vitória (9v-3d).

“A Ideia era derrubar, mas estava sem tempo e ele foi me enrolando. Entretanto, valeu o trabalho de trocação que fiz. Lutei bem em pé até achar o tempo certo de derrubar. No chão, dominei e peguei as costas. Fiquei devendo apenas a finalização”, diz.

“Me senti mal no fim do segundo round e isso me atrapalhou um pouco. Não sei se foi a alimentação ou o trabalho para perder peso. Acho que isso valorizou a minha vitória”, completa.

O MMA segue dominado pelo UFC, ainda mais depois da aquisição do Srikeforce pela Zuffa, empresa que controla o Ultimate. Léo vê com bons olhos o crescimento do BAMMA.

“Precisamos de mais eventos, hoje praticamente só tem o UFC e quem não está lá fica desempregado.O BAMMA foi na Wembley Arena, um local tradicional na Inglaterra, e muito bem feito.O público lotou e prestigiou bastante os brasileiros. O Murilo Ninja, que infelizmente perdeu, foi tratado como um herói”, conta a fera, que pode ter agora a chance pelo cinturão.

“Tenho duas propostas para lutar no Brasil, mas me disseram que quem vencesse essa luta teria a chance pelo cinturão no dia 10 de setembro Rob Sinclair.”

Sobre voltar às disputas de kimono, Léo não descarta, mas, por enquanto, o principal foco é o vale-tudo mesmo.

“Acho difícil lutar Jiu-Jitsu agor. Para lutar MMA tem que estar 100% nisso e para lutar Jiu-Jitsu e ter sucesso também. Sigo nesse caminho do vale-tudo, mas treino direto de pano. Depois dessa luta, já treinei com a galera e nunca deixo o kimono. Depois, quem sabe, não luto de máster, no Internacional? Jaó ADCC, se rolar um convite como em outras vezes, vai ser um honra. Treino direto sem kimono e estaria preparado”, finaliza.

Em dezembro acontece o evento BAMMA 5, na Metro Radio Arena, Inglaterra. E, na luta principal, um peso pesado que chama a atenção vai estar em ação.

Trata-se de Bob Sapp, que ficou muito famoso depois da épica luta contra Rodrigo Minotauro, no Pride, em 2002. O grandalhão, que vem de vitória, encara Stav ‘Crazy Bear’ Economou, o “Urso Maluco”, que conta com dez vitórias, uma derrota e um empate.

This December, BAMMA 5 will be held in the Metro Radio Arena in England. And in the main event is a heavyweight who draws a lot of attention.

That heavyweight is Bob Sapp, who came to fame after an epic battle with Rodrigo Minotauro at Japan’s now-defunct Pride FC promotion in 2002. The big guy coming off a win will face Stav “Crazy Bear”, who counts ten wins, one loss and one draw on his record.

Gunnar remains undefeated in his MMA career. Prior to this week’s win, he last fought in September of 2008, when he overcame Iran Mascarenhas with a second round knockout.

Apontado pelo GRACIEMAG.com como um dos 10 atletas do Jiu-Jitsu para ficar de olho em 2010 (ver aqui), Gunnar Nelson segue fazendo bonito no MMA. No último dia 13, o Islandês venceu mais uma vez. O combate, contra Sam Elsdon, foi no evento BAMMA, realizado em Londres, na Inglaterra. 

Para seguir invicto em sete combates, Nelson usou mais uma vez a arte suave. O triunfo veio com um mata-leão, aplicado aos 2min30s do assalto inicial. Três das vitórias no cartel são por finalização e o resultado positivo veio no primeiro round em cinco das sete lutas.

The welterweight made waves in the submission grappling world after overcoming Jeff Monson and David Avellan to take 4th in the absolute division of the 2009 ADCC event in Barcelona. Rewarded for the performance with a black belt by his master Renzo Gracie, he went on to win gold at the No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu Pan-American Championship.

Gunnar remains undefeated in his MMA career, which has been on hold since he knocked out Iran Mascarenhas in September of 2008.

The pride of Iceland’s next challenge will have a clash-of-styles context to it, as the Jiu-Jitsu black belt will face judo black belt Sam Elsdon, who is also undefeated in his MMA career.
