On the 22nd of January, at Clube Canto do Rio club in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro State, the World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship (refresh your memory here) was held to determine the last batch of Brazilians to earn all-expenses-paid trips to the big event in Abu Dhabi next April.

Champions like Rodolfo Vieira, Gabriel Willcox and Gabi Garcia, among others, earned their way to the United Arab Emirates. Now the winner of the absolute division, team Cicero Costha’s Augusto Ferrari, netted himself a cool 400 dollars for his efforts, to boot.

In the open weight final, Augusto pulled Theodoro Canal into his guard and got the sweep, before going on to finish. Watch and learn from Ferrari:

Queried as to whether there’s another Leandro Lo arising amidst his group of kids, Cicero curbed his enthusiasm.

“It’s hard to say, but we do have other promising athletes. I feel we’ve got a few other good guys here but he’s hard to match. Nevertheless, I’m rooting for everything to go well and another great athlete to come up from our ranks—at the very least so I can do another interview like this one with GRACIEMAG,” quipped the coach.

With 2012 nigh, Costha’s expectations are that the coming year’s calendar will be another stellar one for his team. “In 2012, I expect the group to be even stronger and more united. I’ll do my all for the group to take as many medals as possible. The goal is for the coming year to be even better than this one,” he declared, already sorting his lineup to take to the upcoming European Championship, in Lisbon, Portugal. “The Miyao brothers will be there, since they earned tickets in Rio, and black belt Augusto Ferrari is going too.” (Check out João Miyao in action at the 2011 São Paulo Championship below.)

The European Championship will go down from the 26th to the 29th of January in Portugal. Test your technique and mettle; sign up for the Euros here.

The Baby Barione gymnasium in São Paulo was the venue for the second leg of the São Paulo Jiu-Jitsu Circuit this past Wednesday, and Leandro “Lo” Nascimento (PSLPB) and Talita Nogueira (Ryan Gracie) are still on a roll in competition.

The pair were the standouts at the event, winning the FPJJ absolute titles and reaping the travel and board to the next month’s IBJJF World Championship as a reward.

Leandro Lo, a Cicero Costha black belt and the winner of the lightweight division at the Abu Dhabi World Pro, didn’t give his opponents a chance. First, he took the lightweight division on Saturday, then he closed out the Sunday absolute with teammate Augusto Ferrari.

Now Talita Nogueira, a Pitta Jr. brown belt, was the winner at the ADCC trials in Brazil, without the gi, but she took no rest following the achievement – she kept up her romp in her weight group and also took the absolute after winning a hotly-disputed match against brown belt Andressa Correia (Alliance).

Talita heads into the 2011 Worlds on a roll: will she be able to stop further Alliance athletes?

Over one thousand athletes blue to black belts (from adult to super senior) competed at the tournament. The event was overtaken with emotion and commotion from athletes and spectators alike, with several tributes made in the memory of Master Adilson Souza (Bonsai), who passed away on the first of May. One of the tributes was a T-shirt with a caricature of the master and father of the Souza brothers, worn by the staff.

One of the city of São Paulo’s top Jiu-Jitsu exponents, Augusto Ferrari was one of the standouts at the South American ADCC tryouts, winning the 99 kg division.

“It was really great, a fantastic event. The organization really treats athletes the way they should be treated! It was a wonderful, victorious weekend,” he remarks.

“I didn’t train specifically for the tryouts, since by focus was the IBJJF Brazilian Nationals, coming up May 14. So I went out there to compete with no obligation to win, I went in to keep up my regularity in competition, since there are no events of this scale in São Paulo – and I did great!” added the black belt.

There’s still some time to go, as the main ADCC event is in September. But Ferrari has already taken to planning.

“For the grand finale in England I’ll start No-Gi-specific training a few months in advance. I’m going to take it really seriously; I don’t want to let the opportunity of winning this event slip through my fingers.”

And the fighter is keeping a busy agenda:

“First I want to win the Brazilian Nationals next weekend. I’ll compete in the absolute division. Then I’ll travel to Germany and Denmark for some seminars, and perhaps I’ll compete around there too. In June, when I’m back in Brazil, I’ll take up training for the ADCC again and organize my annual event, the 5th Copa Shihan, in Guarulhos (São Paulo). At the end of the year, in November, I’ll put together the 1st Brussels Jiu-Jitsu Open in Brussels, Belgium. It’s been tough to reconcile so many activities with competition training, but through dedication everything is going well!” he says in closing.

There’s still time to sign up for the Brazilian Nationals. The deadline ends this Sunday. Find out more by clicking here.

E a agenda do lutador segue cheia:

“Primeiro eu quero ganhar o Brasileiro, no próximo fim de semana. Vou lutar categoria e absoluto.

O prazo termina neste domingo. Saiba mais clicando aqui.
