Qual é o segredo para transformar um atleta mediano num grande campeão?

MARCELLO DAFLON: É preciso fazer com que ele acredite nele mesmo. E mostrar que a disciplina é o grande segredo do sucesso. Que por mais que o resultado demore, ele irá chegar. Deixar claro que cada atleta tem o seu tempo e com disciplina e dedicação ele irá conseguir ser um grande campeão.

E quando pensamos além da academia e dos campeonatos? Como um professor de Jiu-Jitsu fomenta os alunos a se tornarem cidadãos melhores, beneficiando assim toda a comunidade?

Todo professor deve ter o propósito de mudar a vida das pessoas para melhor. O professor de artes marciais tem um papel muito importante na comunidade onde atua pois as pessoas que passam por seu dojô se tornam pessoas melhores, mais equilibradas, mais saudáveis, aprendem a se defender, melhoram no que diz respeito ao autocontrole, à confiança, melhoram na disciplina e em outros quesitos que impactam positivamente na sociedade.

Embora tenha competido bastante, você sempre focou na carreira de professor e não de atleta, correto?

A competição me tornou um professor melhor, sou grato às arenas, mas nunca almejei uma carreira de atleta competidor. Por exemplo: nunca fiz uma preparação especial para as competições. Eu estudava e tinha meu trabalho normal e encaixava os treinos no dia a dia. Tentava competir ao máximo. O que ia aparecendo eu me inscrevia. Sem ter uma agenda de campeonatos. E assim fui conquistando medalhas… Fui campeão na faixa-branca e na azul da Copa do Mundo da CBJJO. Campeão estadual pela FJJRio, na faixa-azul. Na roxa, fui medalha de prata no Rio Open IBJJF. Na marrom fui campeão da Copa Carlson Gracie, entre outros títulos. Na preta, fui campeão peso e absoluto do Northen Califórnia Open, da SJJIF. Campeão do Naga, na Califórnia, entre outros títulos.

Você está sempre treinando com ótima performance contra a garotada da sua equipe. Quais são os macetes para os atletas da divisão Master fazerem bonito contra os atletas adultos?

Eu estou sempre treinando com o meus estudantes e tendo uma boa performance porque tive uma base muito sólida. Comecei no judô com uns 10 anos na minha cidade natal Nova Friburgo com o Mestre Marcos Mafra e treinei por uns 8 anos. Depois me mudei para o Rio de Janeiro e comecei no Jiu Jitsu em uma escola super casca grossa que é a lendária Carlson Gracie em Copacabana. Ali comecei a treinar com meu Mestre Ari Galo, que é faixa preta do Mestre Carlson Gracie. Tive treinos muito duros lá em um ambiente com muita história e inspiração. O macete para a categoria Master fazer bonito contra os adultos acho que é fazer um jogo mais justo. Sem muita transição. Jogar no básico com pressão e sem abrir muito o jogo.

Qual é a frase motivacional que você gosta de repetir para você mesmo quando está passando por uma situação difícil na carreira?

A frase motivacional que gosto quando estou em uma situação difícil é: “A disciplina vence a motivação”. Porque não é todo dia que estamos motivados, então não podemos esperar a motivação para fazer o que nos propusemos.

Como você se define como professor de Jiu-Jitsu? Qual é a filosofia por trás da sua escola? E quais as dicas que você costuma dar a quem tem o sonho de se tornar um professor relevante?

Eu me defino como um professor que tenta tirar o melhor de cada aluno. Sempre tentando entender a individualidade de cada um. Essa também é a nossa filosofia na nossa escola em Arcata, na Califórnia (Humboldt Jiu-Jitsu, Carlson Gracie), onde um ajuda o outro a se tornar melhor dentro e fora do tatame. Não nos comparamos uns aos outros. Que cada aluno possa ser uma pessoa melhor do que foi ontem. Todos são muito bem-vindos independente da experiência ou se é bom ou ruim tecnicamente. A nossa base é o respeito e o nosso objetivo é fazer pessoas melhores.

Quando alguém hesita em treinar Jiu-Jitsu, o que você costuma dizer para convencer essa pessoa a vestir o kimono e começar a jornada na arte suave?

Costumo dizer que esse esporte é o melhor jeito para ter um corpo maneiro e ser saudável. E ainda por cima você aprende a se defender. E funciona como terapia também. É um esporte que quando você está praticando você esquece de todos seus problemas porque o seu foco está 100% ali. E quando sair dali estará muito mais forte fisicamente e mentalmente para enfrentar os desafios da vida. E como é um treino tão intenso, quando acaba você estará num estado de prazer e paz. Acho que todos deveriam praticar esse esporte. O Jiu-Jitsu é adaptável a qualquer ser humano.

É como o fechamento do Canecão para os músicos, ou o bota-abaixo da casa de Machado de Assis, para os fãs do escritor. Mas é pior.

Cerca de dez anos após a morte do grande mestre que a liderou por décadas e décadas de glórias esportivas, a academia Carlson Gracie, no terceiro andar da rua Figueiredo Magalhães, número 414, está para fechar as portas. A escola fundada por Carlson ajudou a tirar centenas e centenas de moleques da pobreza e do mau caminho, em quatro décadas de existência.

A viúva do mestre, dona Marly Gracie, com problemas de saúde, não se sente mais em condições de administrar a academia, considerado um verdadeiro templo por muitos alunos e fãs de Carlson Gracie, falecido em 2006. Foi lá, por exemplo, que Rolls Gracie também ensinou seus alunos, antes de falecer em 1982.

Com o afastamento de dona Marly, o dono do espaço, que foi aluno e amigo de Carlson e mantinha o aluguel a 2 mil reais, cedeu às propostas de uma igreja, que promete pagar 7 mil reais mensais pelo uso do lugar.

“O Zé Paulo (dono do lugar) não conseguiu manter mais o preço que fazia para dona Marly, por consideração e amizade à família”, disse o professor Ari Galo, que ensinava pela manhã na academia. “Ele queria que continuássemos ensinando Jiu-Jitsu no lugar, mas o aluguel subiu demais. Se um empresário aparecesse com vontade de investir no espaço, a academia poderia até continuar”.

Por enquanto, o clima é de despedida. O último grande treino de despedida do clássico dojô que formou tantos campeões está marcado: 25 de agosto, às 19h.

The BJJ Professional Cup kicked off this Saturday in Biella, Italy’s Lauretana Forum gymnasium, and plenty more action is in store for Sunday.

The big name to arise from the first day was Poland’s Marcin Held, a Gracie Barra Poland brown belt who also fights professionally in MMA, fighting at the American Bellator event. The fighter won the lightweight and light absolute categories after facing hard-nosed Englishman and Roger Gracie student Oliver Geddes in both finals, thus taking the cash prize.

Another Gracie Barra brown belt met with similar success. Gareth Neale won both the medium heavyweight and heavy absolute divisions, overcoming Marcello Daflon (Carlson Gracie) in the decider.

The standouts at purple belt were Ilke Bulut (Icon), winner of the light absolute, and Genin Julien (Fight Club), who won the heavy absolute.

André Perez (Batata JJ) was the big winner of the absolute blue.

As disputas da BJJ Professional Cup começaram neste sábado no Lauretana Fórum, em Biella, Itália. O domingo promete muitas emoções com as superlutas e todas as disputas da faixa-preta.

Mas quem mandou bem neste primeiro dia de lutas foi o polonês Marcin Held, faixa-marrom da Gracie Barra Polônia que também combate no MMA, atleta do evento americano Bellator. A fera venceu no peso leve e no absoluto leve para embolsar a premiação em dinheiro, com duas vitórias sobre Oliver Geddes, inglês pedreira, aluno de Roger Gracie.

Também na faixa-marrom foi bem Gareth Neale (Gracie Barra), campeão no meio-pesado e absoluto pesado, tendo finalizado Marcello Daflon (Carlson Gracie) na disputa pelo ouro.

Na faixa-roxa, se destacaram Ilke Bulut (Icon), campeão do absoluto leve, e Genin Julien (Fight Club), vencedor no absoluto pesado.

Not even world champion Bernardo Faria, the Alliance rep set to take on Raphael Abi-Rihan in one of the superfights, stayed out, while Wellington Megaton and a number of other black belts joined the excitement.

Speaking of black belts, the stars of the event are already in Biella. Bernardo, Kron Gracie, Yan Cabral and Abi-Rihan are all in the area. We also came across Lúcio Lagarto and students on the train, following a day excursion to Milan, the land of high fashion.

This Saturday the colored belts take to the mats, while the best part of the show – the supermatchups and black belt contest – will be held on Sunday, with Mario Vilella, the founder of the event, in attendance.

The GRACIEMAG.com team is already on location in Biella, Italy, for the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Professional Cup. The event kicks off this Saturday and has big excitement in store, with two superfights (Kron Gracie vs. Yan Cabral and Bernardo Faria vs. Raphael Abi-Rihan.

The competitors are already showing up in town for the contest – which the stars of the superfights will partake in as well –, as are famous faces like Carlson Gracie Jr. and Ricardo De La Riva, who will teach a seminar for all the participants in the event once it is over.

The trip from Rio to Italy started on Monday at Galeão airport, alongside Rickson Gracie, another big name to grace the Lauretano Forum gymnasium. After a brief stopover in Madrid, after nine hours in the air, it was another three hours to Milan.

“I slept the whole flight, it was swell!” remarked the Gracie as he awaited his luggage. “After the event I’m going to Holland, to Amsterdam, where I’ll teach some seminars,” he added.

Outside Malpensa airport, Rickson joined Kron and other family members, while we took off for Biella – another hour trip by car. Biella is an industrial city, which also has ecotourism and trips to the mountains among its attractions. Despite the pleasant spring weather in Europe, one can see blocks of snow on the peaks of the mountains. The population is approximately 46,000 inhabitants and there’s plenty of excellent pasta and pizza on offer, of course, as well as exquisite ice cream for desert. That is, this reporter will need to add some notches to his belt.

Alongside IBJJF referees Alvaro Bobadilla and Alan Moraes and colleagues from the press, the time up until the event will be spent taking trips to neighboring towns. This Friday it will be Turin, the city pictured in this article.
