“Yeah, I put in for my press pass but received two e-mails in response – one saying my request had been accepted, and shortly after, another saying the opposite.”

From the look of it, the second email was right.

But since the presser was in Rio, he wrangled the red bracelet giving him access.

On the inside, a classic scene.

Impeccable production, heavyweight press members, and almost Swiss punctuality.

At 1:09 pm, Vitor Belfort entered the hall followed by featherweight champ José Aldo, UFC president Dana White, as well as Chad Mendes and Anthony Johnson.

Dana White started out by saying tickets would go on sale starting at 11:30 pm this Wednesday and advised, “Better hurry, the they sell out quick.”

Nothing too remarkable happened at the presser – no tumult, no poignant questions.

José Aldo guaranteed that Chad Mendes training with Urijah Faber (who fought and lost to the Brazilian) doesn’t help his opponent one bit: “They’re two different fights.”

Chad thinks otherwise: “Urijah is showing me the paths to victory. I hope to make the most of the chance their giving me.”

Vitor Belfort was enthusiastic about his time training with Georges Saint-Pierre and team: “It was really worthwhile, and I hope more and more of these exchanges between MMA stars happen. We have to meet up in the octagon as much as we do in the gym.”

Belfort’s opponent, Anthony Johnson, was respectful in his comments: “It’s an honor to fight in Brazil, the home of MMA. Belfort is a great guy and great fighter.”

In the crowd, a mix of the specialized and general press.

Hence questions like, “Chad Mendes, you appeared on Twitter wearing a Vasco jersey,and José Aldo is a rubro-negro [Flamengo] fanatic. Are you aware of the rivalry between the two clubs?”

The American was quick to smooth things over but left a provocation hanging in the air: “That photo was taken well before the fight was made. The jersey belongs to my Jiu-Jitsu coach, who’s crazy about Vasco. I didn’t want to offend anyone, but I watched some Vasco games and like the team. Yes, I might root for them.”

Or, to Dana White, “Do you know Galvão Bueno, the Globo commentator?

The UFC kingpin let them down, “I haven’t a clue who he is.”

A prankster in the audience added, “É do Brasilll!” imitating the talking head’s trademark phrase.

Another question had to do with how the Brazilians felt fighting at home.

“I’ve fought in Rio before and it’s always exciting, but this time I’ll be on the big stage. For sure my thoughts will return to the early days, when I first arrived here in Rio,” replied José Aldo.

A Rio de Janeiro native, Befort was thankful: “After so many years, it’s a privilege to fight in Rio. I promise to do my best.”

The microphone made the rounds between reporters until I decided to put in a question,, capitalizing on how no one else touched on the subject.

“Dana, there are two fighters head and shoulder above their divisions – Jon Jones and Anderson Silva. When will we get to see them face off? Is the UFC thinking about that matchup?”

The UFC top dog smiled and faltered before responding: “Well, Anderson and Jones still have some things to do first. Besides that, Anderson has been reluctant to move up to light heavyweight. But we always put together the fights fans want to see, and this one will be no different. I just don’t know when it will happen.”

And the subject shot off in a different direction.

Dana became serious again and announced: “TUF Brazil kicks off on March 25, 2012 and will air every Sunday on Globo. The coaches of the two teams are Wanderlei Silva and Vitor Belfort. In the USA, TUF is the reality show that’s been on the air the longest. Brazil will be stoked to have its own TUF.”

A video with Portuguese narration introduced the show.

When the lights came back on, there were Wand and Belfort.

Dana continued: “From here we’re going to São Paulo for the selection process. We see over 400 guys and test their skills as fighters, check their backgrounds and pick the personalities that would be the most attractive on television,” he explained.

After another round of the room the microphone was back in my hand: “Wand and Belfort, you are rivals and will now face each other as coaches. What makes each of you a better coach than the other?” I said in provocation.

The two didn’t falter, though.

“I’m not thinking about that. I just want to be able to pass on my experience as a fighter to new athletes. I’m going to teach them what it is to want to win, how to deal with injury, training, victory and defeat,” mused a mellow Wand, almost causing us to forget his nickname, “The Axe Murderer”.

Belfa was even more diplomatic: “My concern is to give it my best shot. I’ll be there body, soul and spirit.”

Wrapping up, Dana guaranteed the two will face off in the show’s grand finale.

“Ivan Trindade, de GRACIEMAG, não tem não? Você tem certeza que se credenciou?,” preguntou a recepcionista.

Sim, eu tinha me credenciado, mas recebi dois emails em resposta, um dizendo que o credenciamento tinha sido aceito e outro, logo depois, dizendo exatamente o contrário.

Pelo visto, o segundo estava correto.

Mas, como a coletiva era no Rio, deu-se um jeitinho e consegui a bendita pulserinha vermelha.

Lá dentro, clima de clássico.

Produção impecável, imprensa em peso e pontualidade quase britânica.

Às 13h09, Vitor Belfort entrou no salão, seguido pelo campeão dos penas, José Aldo, pelo presidente do UFC, Dana White, e também por Chad Mendes e Anthony Johnson.

Dana White iniciou dizendo que os ingressos estariam à venda nesta quarta-feira, a partir das 23h30 (leia tudo sobre a venda de ingressos aqui) e aconselhou: “Corram, porque os ingressos acabam logo”.

A coletiva seguiu sem grandes eventos, nenhuma confusão, nenhuma pergunta mais quente.

Zé Aldo garantiu que o fato de Chad Mendes treinar com Urijah Faber (que já enfrentou e perdeu para o brasileiro) não ajuda em nada o adversário: ” São duas lutas diferentes”.

Chad acha que ajuda, sim: “O Urijah está me passando os caminhos para chegar à vitória. Espero aproveitar a chance que me deram”.

Vitor Belfort comemorou o treino com Georges St. Pierre e seu time: “Foi muito proveitoso e espero que cada vez mais aconteça esse intercâmbio entre as estrelas do MMA. Nós temos que nos encontrar tanto no octógono quanto nas academias”.

O adversário de Belfa, Anthony Johnson, entrou no clima de paz: “É uma honra lutar no Brasil, que é o berço do MMA. O Belfort é um grande cara e um grande lutador”.

Na plateia, uma mistura de imprensa especializada e imprensa generalista.

Por isso, perguntas como: “Chad Mendes, você apareceu no Twitter com uma camisa do Vasco e o Zé Aldo é rubro-negro fanático. Você tem noção da rivalidade entre os dois clubes?”

O americano foi rápido na diplomacia, mas deixou no ar uma provocação a mais: “Aquela foto foi tirada bem antes da luta ser marcada. A camisa pertence ao meu técnico de Jiu-Jitsu, que é Vasco doente. Não queria ofender ninguém, mas vi jogos do Vasco e gostei do time. Posso torcer para ele, sim”.

Ou então, para Dana White: “Você conhece o Galvão Bueno, narrador da Globo?”

O “big boss” fez troça: “Não faço idéia de quem seja”.

Um gaiato na plateia completou: “É do Brasillll!”, imitando o global.

Outra questão foi sobre a emoção dos brazucas de lutar em casa.

“Já lutei no Rio e a emoção sempre foi grande, mas agora vou estar no grande palco. Com certeza voltará à minha cabeça o meu início, quando cheguei ao Rio”, respondeu Zé Aldo.

Carioca, Belfort manteve a linha de agradecimento: “Depois de tantos anos, será um privilégio lutar no Rio, estar na crista da onda. Minha promessa é dar o meu melhor”.

O microfone foi rodando entre os repórteres até que decidi fazer uma pergunta, aproveitei que ninguém tinha tocado no assunto ainda.

“Dana, há dois lutadores que estão sobrando em suas categorias, Jon Jones e Anderson Silva. Quando veremos os dois frente à frente? O UFC não pensa nesse confronto?”

O chefão sorriu e hesitou um pouco a responder: “Bem, o Anderson e o Jones ainda têm algumas coisas para fazer antes. Além disso, o Anderson tem relutado em subir para a categoria dos meio-pesados. Mas, nós sempre fazemos as lutas que os fãs querem ver e não será diferente com essa. Só não sei quando ela vai acontecer.”

E então o assunto mudou.

Dana ficou sério de novo e anunciou: “O TUF Brasil começará em 25 de março de 2012 e será transmitido todos os domingos, na Globo. Os técnicos dos dois times serão Wanderlei Silva e Vitor Belfort. Nos EUA, o TUF é o reality show que a mais tempo está no ar. O Brasil deve ficar muito empolgado por ter seu TUF”.

Um vídeo narrado em português apresentou o programa.

Quando as luzes reacenderam, Wand e Belfort lá estavam.

Dana prosseguiu: “Saindo daqui vamos a São Paulo para dar início ao processo de seleção. Devemos encontrar mais de 400 caras e vamos testar suas habilidades de lutadores, checar seus históricos e selecionar aqueles com as personalidades mais atrativas para a televisão”, explicou.

Depois de nova volta pelo salão, o microfone voltou até minha mão: “Wand e Belfort, vocês têm velha rivalidade como lutadores e agora vão se enfrentar como técnicos. O que faz de cada um de vocês um técnico melhor do que o outro?”, provoquei.

Os dois, porém, se mantiveram impecáveis.

“Não penso nisso. Quero apenas poder passar algo da minha experiência sobre o que é ser um lutador para os novos atletas. Vou ensinar o que é ter vontade de vencer, como lidar com contusões, treinamento, vitórias e derrotas”, contemporizou Wand, quase nos fazendo esquecer que um dos seus apelidos é “Cachorro Louco” ( e o outro é o “Assassino do Machado”).

Belfa foi ainda mais diplomático: “Minha preocupação é dar o meu melhor. Vou estar lá de corpo, alma e espírito”.

Para terminar, Dana garantiu que os dois vão se enfrentar no grand finale do evento.

“Para mim, não é uma revanche, e sim mais uma luta. Aliás, nem penso nisso agora. Para  mim, o passado é um cheque compensado, o futuro um cheque pré-datado e o presente é dinheiro na mão”, filosofou Belfort.

Wand lembrou a derrota no UFC Brasil, há quase 15 anos: “Não consegui desempenhar bem naquela luta, mas muito tempo passou desde lá. Espero fazer meus fãs felizes dessa vez”.
