The Baby Barione gymnasium in São Paulo was the venue for the second leg of the São Paulo Jiu-Jitsu Circuit this past Wednesday, and Leandro “Lo” Nascimento (PSLPB) and Talita Nogueira (Ryan Gracie) are still on a roll in competition.

The pair were the standouts at the event, winning the FPJJ absolute titles and reaping the travel and board to the next month’s IBJJF World Championship as a reward.

Leandro Lo, a Cicero Costha black belt and the winner of the lightweight division at the Abu Dhabi World Pro, didn’t give his opponents a chance. First, he took the lightweight division on Saturday, then he closed out the Sunday absolute with teammate Augusto Ferrari.

Now Talita Nogueira, a Pitta Jr. brown belt, was the winner at the ADCC trials in Brazil, without the gi, but she took no rest following the achievement – she kept up her romp in her weight group and also took the absolute after winning a hotly-disputed match against brown belt Andressa Correia (Alliance).

Over one thousand athletes blue to black belts (from adult to super senior) competed at the tournament. The event was overtaken with emotion and commotion from athletes and spectators alike, with several tributes made in the memory of Master Adilson Souza (Bonsai), who passed away on the first of May. One of the tributes was a T-shirt with a caricature of the master and father of the Souza brothers, worn by the staff.

O ginásio Baby Barione em São Paulo sediou, no último fim de semana, a 2ª etapa do Circuito Paulista de Jiu-Jitsu, e confirmou a boa fase dos atletas Leandro “Lo” Nascimento (PSLPB) e Talita Nogueira (Ryan Gracie).

A dupla foi o destaque do evento, ao vencer no absoluto da FPJJ e com isso receber passagens e hospedagem para disputa do Mundial da IBJJF, no próximo mês de junho em Long Beach, Estados Unidos.

Leandro Lo, faixa-preta de Cicero Costha e campeão dos leves em Abu Dhabi, não deu chance para seus adversários. Primeiro, venceu o peso leve no sábado, e no domingo fechou a categoria absoluto com seu companheiro de equipe Augusto Ferrari.

Já Talita Nogueira, faixa-marrom de Pitta Jr, havia vencido a seletiva para o ADCC, sem kimono, mas não descansou – manteve a boa fase e venceu sua categoria e também o absoluto em luta duríssima contra a também faixa-marrom Andressa Correia (Alliance).

O campeonato contou com a participação de mais de mil atletas, somente com graduados da faixa-azul a preta (de adulto a super-senior). O evento acabou sendo tomado pela emoção e comoção de atletas e público, com as diversas homenagens feitas pela entidade em memória do Mestre Adilson Souza (Bonsai), falecido no último dia 1º de maio. Uma das homenagens foi uma camiseta com a caricatura do mestre, pai dos irmãos Souza, utilizada pro todos do staff.

A Alliance é cheia de atletas consagrados que vão dos pesos mais leves, com Bruno Malfacine, Rubens Cobrinha e Michael Langhi, aos mais pesados, com Antonio Peinado, Bernardo Faria, Léo Nogueira e Tarsis Humphreys, entre muitos outros.     

Entretanto, chamou a atenção no Brasileiro de Equipes 2010 a participação de Fabiano Souza, o Boi. O lutador finalizou nas duas apresentações que fez, com a chave leglock, inclusive na luta decisiva, contra Vinícius Marinho, que deu o triunfo ao time. 

“Leglock e omoplata são duas posições que treino bastante na academia e estão saindo bem nas competições. Estou com o tempo delas”, comenta. 

Boi dá aulas na Alliance em Bragança Paulista, sua cidade natal, e treina no QG em São Paulo três vezes por semana ao lado da faixa-marrom Andressa Correia. Apesar de ser menos conhecido no Jiu-Jitsu que os principais nomes da equipe, o faixa-preta tem uma longa estrada no mundo das lutas. 

“Não lutei tanto na CBJJ, mas fui vice no Brasileiro em 2004, na faixa-roxa, tendo feito sete lutas. Também fiquei em terceiro no Mundial 2004. Já morei no Rio de Janeiro por dois anos e meio, treinava na Black House quando me dediquei ao MMA (2v-1e). No último Mundial, na Califórnia, perdi nas quartas-de-final para o Guto Campos. A luta terminou empatada e deram a vitória para ele, mas acho que eu merecia mais pela combatividade”, diz o meio-pesado.

Depois do bom resultado, Boi espera seguir a boa fase e realizar seu grande sonho: o título mundial da Califórnia. 

“Meu carro forte é a competição. Quero o Mundial da IBJJF e estou aberto ao vale-tudo também. Mas quero esse título mundial antes, porque pode abrir mais portas para mim. Ainda luto neste ano a seletiva para o World Pro, em Natal, e o World Cup, evento do Fepa. Ano que vem espero seguir todo o calendário da IBJJF, começando pelo Europeu. Vou incomodar o pessoal nos eventos!”, avisa.

Alliance is loaded with well-established athletes from the lightest weight groups – like Bruno Malfacine, Rubens Cobrinha, and Michael Langhi – to the heaviest – like Antonio Peinado, Bernardo Faria, Léo Nogueira, Tarsis Humphreys and others.

However, the one who grabbed the most attention at the Brazilian Team Nationals 2010 was Fabiano Souza, aka. Boi. The fighter tapped his opponents out with kneebars in both his matches, even the decider against Vinícius Marinho, handing his team the win.

“The kneebar and omplata are two positions I practice a lot at the academy and I’m doing well in competition. I have their timing down pat,” he remarks.

Boi teaches at the Alliance branch in Bragança Paulista, his city of birth, and he trains at the team headquarters in São Paulo thrice a week alongside brown belt Andressa Correia. Although he not that well known in Jiu-Jitsu as the team’s main representatives, the black belt has racked up a lot of mileage in the fight world.

“I haven’t competed that much in the CBJJ events, but I took runner-up in the Brazilian Nationals 2004 as a purple belt after having seven matches. I also took third at the 2004 Worlds. I lived in Rio de Janeiro for two-and-a-half years, training at Black House when I dedicated myself to MMA (2w, 1l). At the last Worlds, in California, I lost in the quarterfinals to Guto Campos. It ended in a draw and they handed him the win, but I feel I deserved it for combativeness,” says the medium heavyweight.

Following the solid showing, Boi hopes to carry on doing well to fulfill his greatest dream of obtaining the world title in California.

“I’m big on competition. I want the IBJJF Worlds and I’m open to MMA, too. But I want the world title first, because it can open a lot of doors for me. I’m going to do the World Pro qualifiers this year, in Natal, and the Fepa World Cup. Next year I hope to keep up with the entire IBJJF calendar starting with the European Championship. I’m going to make some people uncomfortable in those events!” he warns.
