On Sunday, Nov. 3 the second day of the No-Gi World Championship unfolded along with the female adult black belt divisions. With only four weight categories that held competitors, the divisions didn’t last long and neither did some of the matches.

The absolute division was the last black belt division of the day and it went the full amount.

Here is how each divisions played out:

Featherweight: Tammi Musumeci

New black belt Tammi Musumeci conquered the round-robin featherweight division defeating both Nyjah Easton and Tatiana Nascimento. The first round was between Tatiana and Nyjah with Tatiana winning via one advantage. The next match was between Nyjah and Tammi with Tammi taking the win via two points in a sweep battle that brought up the score to 8-6. The final between Tammi and Tatiana began with a guard pull by Tammi, a kneebar attempt and then a successful kimura from closed guard by Tammi.

Lightweight: Ana Carolina Lebre

Gracie Humaita black belt under Leticia Ribeiro, Ana Carolina Lebre defeated both of her opponents in almost the same way. The first match of the division was between Bibiana Silva and Thaysa Silva with Thaysa racking up 10 points for the win. The other semi-final was between Ana and Sophia Drysdale with Ana passing into mount two separate times and then submitting with an armbar. The final between Thaysa and Ana stayed on the feet until Ana took Thaysa down two separate times. Ana then passed and mounted and was able to gather more points from there to rack up a total of 15-0.

Medium-heavyweight: Luiza Monteiro

The division that Luiza Monteiro chose to enter this tournament was one heavier than her normal division but it’s not surprise. Toggling between various divisions for a challenge, she was able to come out on top through the round robin division for the gold this time. The first match between Luiza and Rachel Demara ended with Rachel earning the win via shoulder lock submission. The next match between Luiza and Shanti Abelha ended fairly quickly with a kneebar and Luiza earned her place in the final. Facing Rachel once again, she was the one to submit and grabbed an armbar from the 50/50 position to win the division.

Heavyweight: Talita Treta Nogueira

No stranger to championships, Brazilian Talita Treta Nogueira dominated her only opponent for first place. The final against Andresa Correa went the distance. The match started with a sweep for each early on but Talita earned advantages for a sweep attempt and takedown attempt. Talita spent some time working to pass Andresa’s guard and as the time ran out, Talita was up by two points with a final score of 4-2.

Absolute: Talita Treta Nogueira

In a match that was decided by footwork, Talita Treta Nogueira and Ana Carolina Lebre both refused to pull guard. They also failed to provide enough activity as deemed by the referees and both received stalling points, three penalties and two points awarded to the other opponent. The end score was two points each, three penalties each but three advantages for Talita versus the one advantage for Ana Carolina. Talita won double gold at the Worlds No-Gi. The first day of the 2013 No-Gi World Championship on Saturday, Nov. 2 brought the black belts onto the blue and yellow mats in the Long Beach Walter Pyramid. For the females, eight black belts opted in for the absolute division to battle it out for who would go to the final match on Sunday.

Here is how the division played out:

Quarterfinals

Luiza Monteiro defeated Tatiana Nascimento by toehold.

Ana Carolina Lebre defeated Nyjah Easton by 7-0.

Rachel Demara defeated Andresa Correa by rear naked choke.

Talita Treta Nogueira defeated Shanti Abelha by 7-0.

Semifinals

Ana Carolina Lebre defeated Luiza Monteiro by 9-0.

Talita Treta Nogueira defeated Rachel Demara by 8-6.

Tomorrow, the final match will be Ana Carolina Lebre vs. Talita Treta Nogueira.

That’s right, another year has run its course and you’re not getting any younger. But look at the bright side: it’s the start of a new season, and there are plenty of great challenges awaiting you down the road.

In Jiu-Jitsu, the season is a promising one as well, with a number of likely clashes of stalwart grapplers who have but one thing on their minds: to be the best in the world, no matter who gets in their way.

The rematch between Rodolfo Vieira and Marcus Bochecha is, of course, one of the most heavily anticipated of 2013. But it’s not unprecedented. How about a clash between former absolute world champions Rodolfo and Roger?

2. Leandro Lo vs. Kron Gracie

The lightweight world champion and the Gracie phenom have crossed paths in the past. And this year they may find themselves across the mat from each other again, at ADCC 2013, which will likely go down in Brazil next November. Can you imagine the silence in the Ibirapuera arena as the crowd waits for Leandro Lo and Kron to step onto the mat and lock horns? Eerie.

3. Caio Terra vs. Robson Moura

Another promising one that could come true at ADCC 2013. Is there any doubt sparks would fly if two of Jiu-Jitsu’s most technical little guys finally collide? Let’s keep our fingers crossed.

4. Léo Nogueira vs. Dean Lister

Part of the ADCC’s awesomeness is that the organizers make unlikely matches between gi-clad mat wizards and MMA aces come true. Another of the GRACIEMAG.com crew’s dream match-ups: heavyweight world champion Leonardo Nogueira versus under-99 kg ADCC champ Dean Lister. Who takes this one?

5. Guilherme Mendes vs. Paulo Miyao

Now sporting brown belts, the Miyao brothers will be heading to Abu Dhabi to show they’ve got what it takes to grapple with black belts on even terms. One of the most intriguing hypothetical match-ups would be between the Miyaos and the Mendeses. Who’s got the deadlier guard? Whose berimbolo packs more razzle-dazzle? The way our team sees it, Gui Mendes and Paulo Miyao would be a sight to behold for anyone intrigued by the study of modern Jiu-Jitsu.

6. Rômulo Barral vs. Keenan Cornelius

Brown belts squaring off with black belts always makes for good viewing. Does the reigning medium-heavyweight world champion, Rômulo Barral, have anything to teach up-and-comer Keenan Cornelius? If we’re lucky, we’ll find out in Abu Dhabi or at the ADCC.

7. Fabio Gurgel vs. Zé Mario Sperry

This all-coach showdown is one of the big attractions on tap for ADCC 2013 in Brazil. What have the two monsters of guard passing got in store for each other and the crowd?

8. Bráulio Estima vs. André Galvão

Friends and rivals from way back, André Galvão and Bráulio “Carcará” are the stars of the ADCC marquee supermatch. The winner will go on to face the absolute champion when the 2015 event rolls around. The loser will be stripped of his post as No-Gi king and relegated to competing in the regular divisions. Who wins it? How? Brace yourself for technical fireworks.

9. Xande Ribeiro vs. DJ Jackson

A clash of the old guard and new generation, guard player and passer—truth is, Xande and DJ have what it takes to make a match-up between them a lot more than just that. May 2013 bring this great bout.

10. Rafael Lovato vs. Kayron Gracie

At Metamoris Pro, Lovato put on a categorical performance and stretched Kayron’s arm to its full extent. How would a 2013 rematch between the two play out?

11. Fernando Tererê vs. Clark Gracie

Will Tererê indeed return to top-flight competition in 2013? We’re yearning for him to. And our hope is he’ll do swell against the cream of the current middleweights crop, like Clark Gracie, or Alan Finfou, or Victor Estima. Will we be seeing that trademark hook-sweep back making stalwart black belts take flight on the big stage again?

12. Mackenzie Dern vs. Luanna Alzuguir

Could the newly promoted Gracie Humaitá black belt dethrone Alliance frontrunner Luanna? War looms on the horizon!

13. Ana Carolina Lebre vs. Gabi Garcia

Carol, a mainstay of Gracie Humaitá’s female team, was one of the last ladies who, through great agility and well-oiled technique, managed to overcome the overpowering presence of Gabi Garcia, back when the two were still purple belts. A re-encounter between the two, at black belt, would be a monumental moment for 2013.

The young Mackenzie Dern was the big name in the female brown belt division at the 2012 Worlds, which ended this past Sunday. At the Long Beach Pyramid the daughter of Wellington Megaton snapped up two gold medals at featherweight and open weight, and emotions swelled within her.

“It was even more than I’d hoped, because I managed to get the finish in all three of my matches at weight, two by choke and a footlock in the final. After that, I entered the absolute just to get more matches in, without any expectations whatsoever. I just went in to have fun and learn, not thinking about results. I was really pleased that in the absolute I got the finish in all my matches as well, three of them by footlock and one choke,” she said jubilantly in a quick chat with GRACIEMAG.com.

WHAT DO YOU FEEL MADE THE DIFFERENCE IN YOUR PERFORMANCE AT THE 2012 WORLDS?

I fight for the finish in all my matches, no matter what championship I’m in, and I feel that’s why I did so well. Especially in the two finals, the important part was to stick to my strategy of always getting myself into the best position, whether on top or on bottom, and thus pave the way to the finish. That was the main thing I got right in the finals.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE FACING YOUR TEAMMATE ANA CAROLINA LEBRE IN THE ABSOLUTE FINAL?

The situation arose when Royler [Gracie] came and told us both that the decision as to whether we faced each other was ours to make, it was up to us. So we discussed it. And we decided that both of us were doing well, had good matches at the Worlds and won our divisions, both made it to the final, and we both deserved the absolute title, right? So we decided we’d face off for real and, regardless of the result, we agreed not to harbor any ill feelings towards each other. We’re professionals and know that a fight is a fight, and anyone could have won it. When we fought, we spent some time on the feet before going to the ground. Carol was in my guard, and I attacked with an omoplata. She postured up to defend and I switched to a footloock, where I got the finish. Carol’s a tough and humble girl, and I was happy to reach the absolute final with her.

HOW DID YOU TRAIN JIU-JITSU IN HAVING A PERFECT WORLDS?

My primary worry was that I’d go into the 2012 Worlds fearing that I’d land in a position I had trouble with. So I focused a lot on preparing to deal with any position. I corrected my weaknesses with the help of my father, boyfriend and team. I worked a lot on my weaknesses, did lots of physical conditioning work and lots of specific training for this Worlds.

WHAT’S THE MAIN LESSON YOU LEARNED AT THIS TOURNAMENT?

I feel I learned that you have to be confident in your game, always. Sometimes in training you may have run into trouble or a hard time with some position, but all you have to do is keep your head on straight when competing. That’s vital in doing well in competition.

WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU DID DIFFERENTLY THIS WORLDS?

What I sought to do differently this Worlds was go for more foot attacks, which you’re allowed to do at brown belt. I’m working on the position a lot in training, and thank God it worked out, because four of the submissions in my seven matches were footlocks.

ANY POINTERS ON YOUR ARSENAL OF FOOT ATTACKS?

When you go for a footlock, pay a lot of attention to your foot as well, because a lot of the time your opponent can defend by attacking you right back. When you attack a foot, hide yours. Then get a firm grip on the top of the foot with your first hand, and with your second hand grab hold of your wrist to get the figure-four on the foot. Then start squeezing out the footlock, pushing the foot towards the back of their thigh, and turn your body sideways to get as much leverage as possible and get the finish. It’s simple.

ANY FINAL LESSONS FOR OUR JIU-JITSU-PRACTITIONER READERS WHO DREAM OF ONE DAY BECOMING CHAMPIONS, AND FOR GETTING TO BROWN BELT ONE DAY?

The best way to pull off new moves at championships is to train, train and train. Be confident in what you’re training, because if you’re managing to do new positions well in training, there’s a greater likelihood you’ll be able to do them at championships.

A jovem Mackenzie Dern foi o grande nome da faixa-marrom feminino no Mundial 2012, encerrado no último domingo. Na Pirâmide de Long Beach, a filhota de Wellington Megaton beliscou as medalhas de ouro no peso-pena e do absoluto, e se emocionou muito.

“Foi até mais do que eu esperava, pois consegui finalizar todas as três lutas da minha categoria, duas no estrangulamento e a final na chave de pé. Depois, entrei no absoluto só para ter mais lutas, sem nenhuma cobrança. Era só para me divertir e aprender, independente do resultado. Fiquei muito feliz que no absoluto também consegui finalizar todas as minhas quatro lutas, sendo três no pé e uma no estrangulamento”, vibrou ela, que bateu um papo rápido com o GRACIEMAG.com.

O que você acha que fez diferença no seu desempenho no Mundial 2012?

Eu luto buscando a finalização em todas as minhas lutas, em qualquer campeonato que eu for lutar, e por causa disso disso acho que consegui vencer bem. Especificamente nas duas finais, o importante foi que segui a minha estratégia de me colocar sempre na melhor posição, seja por cima ou por baixo, e assim criar a abertura para a finalização. Isso foi o principal acerto nas finais.

Como foi enfrentar sua companheira de equipe, Ana Carolina Lebre, na final do absoluto?

A situação ocorreu quando Royler (Gracie) veio falar para nós duas que a decisão de nos enfrentarmos seria nossa, ficaria a nosso critério. Conversamos então. E decidimos que nós duas estamos numa fase boa, fizemos boas lutas no Mundial e ganhamos nossas categorias, nós duas chegamos à final e as duas mereciam o título absoluto, né. Resolvemos assim lutar para valer e, independentemente do resultado, concordamos que não teríamos um sentimento ruim com a outra. Somos profissionais e sabemos que luta é luta, e qualquer uma poderia ter vencido. Na hora da luta, ficamos trocando em pé durante um tempo e acabamos indo para o chão. A Carol ficou na minha guarda e ataquei uma omoplata, ela fez postura para defender e troquei para a chave de pé, de onde cheguei à finalização. Carol é uma menina muito dura, humilde e fiquei feliz de chegar à final do absoluto com ela.

Como foram seus treinos de Jiu-Jitsu para um Mundial perfeito?

A minha maior preocupação era entrar no Mundial 2012 com medo de cair numa posição que eu tenho dificuldade. Então, eu foquei muito para me preparar e enfrentar qualquer posição. Corrigi as minhas falhas, com a ajuda do meu pai, meu namorado e da minha equipe. Treinei muito as minhas falhas, fiz muita preparação física e muito treino especifico para esse Mundial.

Qual a principal lição que você aprendeu nesse torneio?

Sinto que aprendi que você precisa ser confiante no seu jogo, sempre. Por vezes, no treino, você pode ter se saído mal ou estar com dificuldades de fazer alguma posição, mas basta manter a cabeça boa na hora de lutar. Isso é fundamental para se sair bem na competição.

O que você sente que fez de diferente nesse Mundial?

Nesse mundial o que eu procurei fazer de diferente foi atacar mais a chave de pé, um recurso permitido na faixa-marrom . Eu estou treinando muito essa posição nos treinos e graças a Deus acho que deu certo, porque finalizei quatro das minhas sete lutas no pé.

Algum detalhe desse arsenal de ataques no pé?

Quando você for atacar a chave de pé, preste bastante atenção no seu pé também, porque várias vezes o seu adversário irá atacá-lo de volta para se defender. Quando for atacar o pé, esconda o seu. Depois, faça uma pegada firme com a primeira mão, na parte de cima do pé e passe a segunda mão, fazendo a pegada no seu próprio punho para encaixar a kimura de pé. Comece então a arrochar a chave de pé, levando o pé da pessoa em direção a parte posterior da coxa e gire o seu corpo para o lado, para conseguir uma maior alavanca para chegar a finalização. É simples.

Alguma lição final para nosso leitor e praticante de Jiu-Jitsu que sonha ser um campeão, e pegar a faixa-marrom um dia ?

O melhor jeito de conseguir aplicar os novos golpes nos campeonatos é treinar, treinar e treinar. Fique confiante no seu treino, porque provavelmente se você está conseguindo fazer bem as posições nos treinos, você tem grandes chances de conseguir aplicar tudo nos campeonatos.

One of the great black belts in action in women’s Jiu-Jitsu, Michelle Nicolini is still celebrating having won the world featherweight title. The win came in grand style, having made it past stalwart competitors like Ana Carolina Lebre and Kyra Gracie. Now the CheckMat rep is getting ready for her MMA debut, which will be no walk in the part either. On June 23 she’ll be fighting at Inka Fight, an event in Peru, a place where the crowd tends to bring the pressure on Brazilian fighters.

How do you feel about your matches at the Worlds and winning the title?

I felt really great and focused. I had a by in my first match and faced Tatiana Nascimento in the second. I managed to sink a figure-four footlock on her. The next match was against Carol Lebre, who’s beaten a lot of tough girls before and even Kyra – more reason not to take any risks against her. I pulled guard on her right away and luckily managed the triangle early in the match. I was through to the final – half the job done. All that was left was one more match and nothing was going to distract my focus at that point. I was full of desire to win. People always ask me if I’ve ever faced Kyra before: this was our first fight. She’s really technical, tight. I didn’t have much room to work with. When, in the end, I saw I was ahead on advantages, with her defending in a triangle, I though, “She’s not going to tap, but she’s not going to get out of here either.” So I heard my cheering section counting down and I celebrated. It was pure joy!

How do you see women’s Jiu-Jitsu presently? Who do you feel the top fighters are?

It’s come a long way. We still need to fight for a more equal standing, carve out our place at events and even in the media. For as long as we don’t carve out that place for ourselves, we won’t be the beneficiaries of sponsorship and good payouts. I feel the main female fighters have been preparing themselves for competition in a professional manner. The ones who don’t dedicate themselves 100% drop off along the way. I know the female teams coming up are making it because they can count on lots of dedication from the athletes, teamwork, girls who abdicate from many things to become champions. At least the black belts I know, this year, world champions, forsook many things for the dream of winning the Worlds, for having their work recognized. They’re to be congratulated!

Why did you decide to risk fighting MMA in Peru? Are there other offers in the works as well?

Curiosity, the desire to see what it’s like, and, as you yourself said, to take a risk doing something different. I want to get in the cage and feel the adrenaline everyone’s talking about. I may freeze up when the time comes, but I may also like it. I have to do a fight to clear up any doubts, come to conclusions. I don’t have any other offers yet.

After MMA, what will your routine be like? Full blast in training for the ADCC?

Everything in its proper order. It’s a good thing I’m not injured (laughs)! When I get back from Peru I’ll take a week off, stay at home with my parents, my boyfriend, my dogs… I’ll get back to the rote of training in the first week of July. I’ll need a lot of help from my training partners. The ADCC is everyone’s dream; I want to go there and win it.

And who will be the big challenges at the ADCC?

We know this is an event not just anyone signs up for; you have to have won a tryout or have a great CV to get invited. I feel all the battles will be tough and I’m prepared for whoever I face. It will be great to watch Leo Vieira compete before my eyes. I’ve only ever seen him compete once, in 2005, also in the ADCC. It’s been a while! I’d like for my training friends Luiza Monteiro and Marina Ribeiro to get invited, as well as “Buchecha”. All of them have been having great campaigns. Let’s wait and see.

Uma das grandes faixas-pretas em ação no Jiu-Jitsu feminino, Michelle Nicolini ainda comemora o título mundial no peso pena. A vitória foi em grande estilo, tendo enfrentado pedreiras como Ana Carolina Lebre e Kyra Gracie. Agora a representante da CheckMat se prepara para estrear no MMA, e também não vai ter vida fácil. No dia 23 de junho, ela luta no Inka Fight, evento no Peru, terra que a torcida costuma botar pressão nos lutadores brasileiros.

O que achou das suas lutas no Mundial e de mais esse título?

Me sentia muito bem e focada. Estava de by na primeira luta e na segunda enfrentei a Tatiana Nascimento. Consegui aplicar uma chave americana no pé dela. A luta seguinte foi com a Carol Lebre, que já ganhou de meninas duras e da própria Kyra, mais um motivo para eu não arriscar. Chamei logo para a minha guarda e por sorte consegui um triângulo logo no inicio da luta. Estava na final, metade do meu trabalho realizado, faltava só uma luta e a essa altura nada tiraria o meu foco. Estava com muita vontade de ganhar. As pessoas sempre me perguntaram se eu já tinha lutado com a Kyra Gracie, esta foi nossa primeira luta. Ela é muito técnica, justa. Não tive muitos espaços. Quando, no final, vi que eu vencia por vantagens, com ela se defendendo em um triangulo, pensei: ela não vai bater, mas também não vai sair daqui. Aí fiquei ouvindo minha torcida fazer a contagem regressiva e comemorei. Foi só alegria!

Qual é a sua visão do Jiu-Jitsu feminino atual? O que acha das principais lutadoras?

Tem evoluído muito. Ainda precisamos lutar por mais igualdade, ganhar nosso espaço nos eventos e até mesmo na mídia. Enquanto não conquistarmos esse espaço, não seremos favorecidas com patrocínios e boas premiações. Acho que as principais lutadoras têm se preparado de forma bem profissional para as competições. As que não se dedicam 100% ficam no caminho. Sei que as equipes femininas que estão indo bem vão porque contam com muita dedicação das atletas, cumplicidade, meninas que abrem mão de muitas coisas para serem campeãs. Pelo menos as faixas-pretas que conheço, deste ano, campeãs mundiais, abdicaram de várias coisas pelo sonho mundial, pelo reconhecimento do trabalho. Estas estão de parabéns!

Por que decidiu se arriscar numa luta de MMA no Peru? Existem outras propostas também?

Curiosidade, vontade de conhecer e, como você mesmo disse, me arriscar em algo diferente. Quero subir no octagon e sentir essa adrenalina que muitos comentam. Pode ser que eu trave lá na hora, mas também pode ser que eu curta muito. Tinha que fazer uma luta e aí sim poder tirar minhas dúvidas, conclusões. Ainda não tenho novas propostas.

Depois do MMA, como segue a rotina? Preparação total para o ADCC?

Tudo muito na sequência. Ainda bem que venho sem me lesionar r(risos)! Quando voltar do Peru, vou tirar enfim uma semaninha de férias, ficar com meus pais, meu namorado, minhas cachorrinhas… Na primeira semana de julho, de volta a rotina. Vou precisar muito da ajuda dos meus parceiros e parceiras de treino. ADCC é um sonho para qualquer um, quero chegar lá para ser a nova campeã.

E no ADCC, quais vão ser os maiores desafios?

Sabemos que este não é um evento que qualquer uma se inscreve, precisa ser campeã de alguma seletiva ou dona de um bom currículo para ser convidada. Acho que as batalhas serão todas duras e vou estar muito preparada para qualquer adversária. Vai ser muito bom assistir ao Leozinho Vieira lutar ao vivo na minha frente. Só o vi lutando uma vez, em 2005, também no ADCC. Já faz tempo! Gostaria que minhas amigas de treino Luiza Monteiro e Marina Ribeiro fossem convidadas e também o “Buchecha”, todos eles vêm de ótimas campanhas. Vamos aguardar!
