The traditional US Open Jiu-Jitsu Championship will see its 17th installment, this coming October 6-7 in San Jose, California.

The event, which thrust into the gentle-art limelight the likes of BJ Penn, Kron Gracie, Jake Shields, Nick Diaz, Jeff Glover and Rafael Lovato, continues to attract aces of the highest caliber, as well as up-and-comers from California to Alaska. If you haven’t signed up yet, you have until October 3 to do so.

So far for this year such first-rate fighters as Augusto Tanquinho, Carlos Mello, Augusto Queixinho, Nathan Mendelsohn and Tamer Rice have all joined the fray to light up the mats at Independence High School.

Promoter of the event Claudio França has also set up a pre-tourney refereeing clinic for the 5th. The official IBJJF rules will be taught by Alvaro Mansur, a fifth degree black belt and director of the refereeing for the sport’s governing body.

O tradicional US Open de Jiu-Jitsu está perto de sua 17ª edição, marcada para 6 e 7 de outubro, em San José, na Califórnia.

O evento que lançou grandes nomes da arte, como BJ Penn, Kron Gracie, Jake Shields, Nick Diaz, Jeff Glover e Rafael Lovato, continua a atrair craques de alto gabarito, além de talentos e promessas da Califórnia ao Alasca. On the coming 28th and 29th of April, anyone who heads to Independence High School in San Jose, California, will be treated to the 5th American Cup Jiu-Jitsu tournament. The championship is promoted by Claudio França, one of main spearheads of sport Jiu-Jitsu in the region.

O Campeonato Europeu de Jiu-Jitsu 2012 começou na manhã desta quinta-feira, em Lisboa. Os termômetros de rua marcavam algo em torno de 15 graus Celsius, o que representa um friozinho suportável para os encasacados lutadores brasileiros. Sensação térmica bem diferente daquela assimilada pelos lutadores do Leste da Europa, rapaziada forte, de pele pálida e cabelos loiros, que desdenha do inverno português usando bermudas, chinelos e camiseta regata.

Esse, aliás, é um dos grandes charmes do Europeu de Jiu-Jitsu da IBJJF, a marcante diversidade dos competidores. Um atleta africano não falava inglês, nem português, nem espanhol. O árbitro teve de se esforçar para transmitir a informação gestualmente. A mímica funcionou. E assim o Jiu-Jitsu se expande. Este ano, a organização do evento diz que são cerca de 2.200 inscritos, daí a inédita ampliação da área de combate para dez ringues. Dá gosto de ver a foto panorâmica do interior do Complexo Municipal Esportivo do Casal Vistoso, onde o Europeu tradicionalmente é realizado. Arquibancadas lotadas, áreas de aquecimento repletas de lutadores sedentos pela adrenalina do Jiu-Jitsu competitivo.

Hoje foi o dia dos iniciantes – faixas-brancas e faixas-azuis –, a grande maioria exibindo um gás invejável. À beira dos ringues avistamos o diretor de arbitragem, Álvaro Mansur, com um semblante sério, sempre muito atento.

Café-da-manhã: dezenas de ovos cozidos

“É neste evento que estamos aplicando pela primeira vez as novas regras do Jiu-Jitsu competitivo, repare como o número de punições está sendo muito maior que o comum. Espero que no fim de semana os faixas-pretas mostrem pleno conhecimento das novas regras”, disse Álvaro. E por falar em faixa-preta, o atual campeão mundial absoluto, Rodolfo Vieira, já está em Lisboa, devorando de forma impressionante no café-da-manhã seu cardápio à base de dezenas de ovos cozidos.

The  2012 European Jiu-Jitsu Championship kicked off this Thursday morning in Lisbon, Portugal. The street thermometers were showing a temperature of around 15 degrees Celsius, meaning an unbearable frosty feeling for the bundled up Brazilians who flew in to compete from the South American summer. The wind chill was met quite differently by the competitors coming in from Eastern Europe—durable young folk with white skin and blond hair, who make a mockery of the Portuguese winter by sporting shorts, flip-flops and tank tops.

That, by the way, is precisely one of the most charming parts of the IBJJF European Championship—the striking diversity of its participants. One African athlete didn’t speak a word of English, nor Portuguese, nor Spanish. The referee did his best to get the information he needed to convey across by gesticulating. His miming did the trick. And thus Jiu-Jitsu expands its horizons. This year, the organizers of the event report around 2,200 competitors to have signed up; hence the amplification of the floor space to an unprecedented ten match areas. The panoramic photo of the inside view of the Casal Vistoso municipal sports complex, where the Europeans are traditionally held, is eye candy. The stands are packed, warm-up areas brimming with athletes fired up on the adrenaline of sport Jiu-Jitsu.

Today was beginners day—white to blue belts—, most of the contestants displaying an enviable gas tank. At the edge of the contest area we catch site of the director of refereeing, Álvaro Mansur, wearing a serious expression and as attentive as always.

BREAKFAST: DOZENS OF BOILED EGGS

“This is the first event where we are applying the new rules of sport Jiu-Jitsu. Notice how many more penalties are being awarded than usual. I hope that by the weekend the black belts show themselves to be fully aware of the new rules,” said Álvaro. And speaking of black belts, the current absolute champion of the world, Rodolfo Vieira, is already in Lisbon, putting down an astounding breakfast consisting of dozens of boiled eggs.

WHO CAN PUT THE BRAKES ON RODOLFO VIEIRA?

“He’s a machine, a bulldozer; he’s going to kick butt this championship,” said Victor Costa, Rodolfo’s sponsor. Victor has been keeping close tabs on his poster boy’s training.

Black belt world champion in 2010 Hillary Williams heads into the new year as one of the big names in female Jiu-Jitsu. The fighter was sidelined during the second half of the year due to a wrist injury but stayed involved in the sport, notably as an IBJJF referee.

What was it like having to sit out competitions?

I got hurt, had several injuries and also dedicated myself to college. So, during the second half of the year, I stuck more to refereeing. But the truth is that it was a great opportunity. I had the chance to learn a lot more about the rules and now I understand the game a lot better. I’m not in the kind of shape I’d like to be, but I’m now on vacation from college, in Miami at Roberto Cyborg’s academy, and I know I’ll be fine for the upcoming championships.

Do you intend to compete at all the championships in 2011?

I want to compete at everything possible. I’ll be in the USA until May. Then, I’ll take some time off from my studies to spend three months training in Brazil. I’ll have fun and train. In August, I’ll start the second phase of medical school here in the USA and it will be really hard to compete. I’ll have more studying to do and I’ll work at a hospital.

What was it like refereeing big matches like the final between Beatriz Mesquita and Michelle Nicolini at the No-Gi Worlds?

It pretty much came out of the blue. I was in Miami to watch the event and I took a course. I learned a number of rules, which was great, and I was also able to see how it’s a really hard job to do. I’ll never complain about to the referees again! I reffed the final between Michelle Nicolini and Beatriz Mesquita and got really nervous, to tell you the truth. But Álvaro Mansur spoke with me earlier and I calmed down, and it was a really good match, with two excellent fighters.

Which female fighters do you most like watching in competition?

The fighters I liked watching most this year were Bia Mesquita and Michelle. They attack a lot and I love watching them fight. In my weight group, I always admired Hannette Staack. I don’t even have words to describe her. She stopped some this year, but I hope she comes back. It would be really cool to face her.

Campeã mundial em 2010, graduada à faixa-preta, Hillary Williams segue como uma das grandes atletas no Jiu-Jitsu feminino. A lutadora ficou afastada das competições no segundo semestre do ano, depois de uma lesão no pulso, mas atacou em outras áreas, como árbitra da IBJJF.

Como foi ficar afastada das competições?

Me machuquei, tive várias lesões e ainda me dediquei à faculdade. Então, no segundo semestre, fiquei mais arbitrando. Mas isso, na verdade, foi uma grande oportunidade. Tive a chance de aprender muito mais sobre as regras e entendo o jogo muito melhor agora. Não estou na forma que queria, mas, de férias na faculdade, estou em Miami, na academia do Roberto Cyborg, e sei que vou estar bem para os próximos campeonatos.

Pretende lutar tudo em 2011?

Quero lutar tudo o que for possível. Fico nos EUA até maio. Depois, dou um tempo nos estudos e pretendo passar três meses no Brasil, treinando. Vou curtir bastante e trenar. Em agosto, inicio a segunda fase de medicina aqui nos EUA e vai ficar muito difícil competir. Os estudos vão aumentar e vou trabalhar num hospital.

O que achou da experiência de arbitrar lutas importantes como a final entre Beatriz Mesquita e Michelle Nicolini no Mundial Sem Kimono?

Aconteceu quase do nada. Estava em Miami para torcer e fiz o curso. Aprendi várias regrinhas, isso foi ótimo, e também pude entender que é um trabalho muito difícil. Nunca mais vou reclamar com os árbitros! Arbitrei a final da Michelle Nicolini com a Beatriz Mesquita e fiquei bem nervosa, para falar a verdade. Mas o Álvaro Mansur falou comigo antes, fiquei tranquila, e foi uma luta muito boa, com duas excelentes lutadoras.

Quais lutadoras mais te agradam nas competições?

As lutadoras que mais gostei de ver neste ano foram a Bia Mesquita e a Michelle. Elas atacam para caramba e adoro vê-las lutar. No meu peso, em especial, sempre admirei a Hannette Staack. Não tenho nem o que falar dela. Ela parou um pouco neste ano, mas espero que ela volte. Seria muito legal enfrentá-la.

O Curso Oficial de Arbitragem promovido pela Federação Gaúcha de Jiu-Jitsu (FGJJ), neste fim de semana, em Porto Alegre, reuniu 50 participantes entre atletas e praticantes da arte suave. Durante dois dias, o diretor de arbitragem da Confederação Brasileira de Jiu-Jitsu (CBJJ) e da International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF), Álvaro Mansor, trabalhou temas relacionados às regras do Jiu-Jitsu brasileiro e técnicas de arbitragem.

As aulas aconteceram nas dependências da Base Academia e atraíram não apenas representantes de Porto Alegre, mas de outras cidades e até estados, como Santa Catarina. Coordenador-técnico da FGJJ, Fernando Paradeda destaca a importância do evento.

“Tivemos um fim de semana especial. O curso foi um sucesso. Certamente demos mais um passo importante na qualificação do nosso esporte. Além de atletas de alto nível, também precisamos ter árbitros nessa condição”, diz Paradeda.

Puderam participar atletas e praticantes de todas as faixas, com diploma para os participantes da faixa-roxa a preta.  Oficializados pela CBJJ, todos estarão legalmente aptos a atuar em competições oficiais.

Uma grande chance de os lutadores do Nordeste ficarem por dentro das regras do Jiu-Jitsu e as suas interpretações é nos dias 13 e 14 de novembro. Nesta data, o diretor de arbitragem da IBJJF, Alvaro Mansur, vai estar em João Pessoa, na Paraíba, onde ministra mais um curso com chancela da maior entidade do Jiu-Jitsu mundial.

The aim of promoter Claudio França was to reach the thousand-athlete mark, but the US Open ended sign-ups with 920, for its 15th installment in Santa Cruz, California, to kick off October 15.

“As last year we had 800 fighters, the number is really good. Next year we’ll make it,” said the master in celebration, in his usual mellow way.

Among those to sign up at the last minute, world champion (gi and no-gi) Antonio Braga Neto stands out. Neto has the thorny mission of not just winning the absolute, but overshadowing the participation of the 919 other fighters. Can the Roberto Gordo student do it?

Besides Braga Neto, black belt Marcel “Mãozinha” Fortuna, his teammate at Ralph Gracie academy, is in. Other aces to grace the mats are Philipe Della Monica, Ryan Hall, Augusto Tanquinho, Rafael Formiga, Theodoro Canal, Carlos Melo, James Foster, Mikey Gomez, Rodrigo Freitas, and Mike Weaver, among others.
