Neste fim de semana, os fãs de Jiu-Jitsu do estado cascudo do Amazonas prometem se reunir no ginásio Amadeu Teixeira, para a segunda edição do Manaus Open da CBJJ. O torneio vai apontar a academia mais competitiva da cidade, um clássico celeiro de craques da arte suave, desde Saulo Ribeiro até Ronaldo Jacaré e outras feras.

Entre as principais atrações, há faixas-pretas campeões mundiais, jovens de futuro e até um ex-atleta do UFC.

Bicampeão mundial em 2004 e 2013 como faixa-preta, o veterano Gabriel Moraes (Checkmat) marca presença no peso-pena. Outro nome conhecido da mesma equipe é o da pedreira Ivaniel Oliveira, favorito ao ouro dos plumas.

No peso médio, estão presentes Diego Borges (Zenith), Caio Almeida (Ryan Gracie) e outros talentos.

Já a faixa-preta master traz mais uma vez o peso-pena Omar Salum (Gracie Humaitá), que foi campeão mundial em 2000, no Rio de Janeiro. Na divisão meio-pesado, a atração é o professor americano e ex-UFC Aberto Crane, faixa-preta de Vinicius Draculino.

Under the watch of Professors Alberto Crane and Vinicius Draculino, GMA Gracie Barra Burbank promoted Bruno O’Hara and Matthew Pollino to the rank of black belt on Tuesday evening.

O’Hara and Pollino are the first two black belts to come out of the Gracie Barra Burbank academy, which is headed by Professor Crane.

“They just have such a great attitude and are humble,” Crane told GRACIEMAG.com. “I’m just really proud I’ve been able to award them their black belts and be part of their journey.”

O’Hara first started taking Jiu-Jitsu in 2001. His 12-year journey brought him to Crane’s Burbank, Calif. academy, where he said he finds a strong bond with those close to him.

“I’m here to inspire and be inspired,” newly minted black-blet O’Hara said. “I’m grateful to have such wonderful friends and family through BJJ. I am so honored to be learning under Professor Crane and Coach Artin Saginian.”

Pollino started rolling even earlier than his friend, O’Hara, first throwing on a Jiu-Jitsu gi in 2000. He has participated in other martial arts over the past 20 years and succeeded in earning his BJJ black belt, even after suffering through injuries that have left others without the ability to walk, let alone train.

Professor Crane is a third-degree black belt under Professor Draculino, and his Burbank academy opened in 2010.

Nosso GMA e líder da Gracie Barra Encino, Alberto Crane é um dos veteranos garantido na divisão dos masters do San Francisco Open, evento da IBJJF que rola no próximo domingo, dia 24 de fevereiro, na Califórnia.

“Minha expectativa para o San Francisco Open é obter a medalha de ouro, porém o mais importante é voltar a competir para aprender e melhorar o meu Jiu-Jitsu, para meu benefício e dos meus alunos”, disse o americano, em bate-papo com o GRACIEMAG.com.

“Continuo estudando e praticando um monte de posições novas. O segredo para vencer é ser agressivo e sempre se adiantar, obtendo primeiro a posição desejada”, completou o faixa-preta de Vinicius Draculino, que mostra no vídeo abaixo como estrangular no crucifixo.

Repare que ele pode aplicar o relógio, mas opta por puxar o braço com a perna e fechar o triângulo, prendendo o mesmo ou finalizando (veja a 8s do vídeo).

Em seguida, é hora do rolamento (27s). Com o adversário a sua mercê, ele arrocha a gola e encerra com o estrangulamento (43s).

It’s 10:45, Saturday morning. Lloyd Irvin is on stage talking about, guess what, marketing. This time on how to drive the new student to the class you want him to be placed on and the success ladder he will be subject to. The conference room at Renaissance Hotel at Sea World, Orlando is organized into three rows of chairs; the first, on the left, has 57 people seated, 129 in the middle, 56 on the right.

Hidden in the audience there’s one of the protagonists of the UFC fight of the night last week, his face still testament to how tough and bloody a fight it was. There’s also the second American ever to become Jiu-Jitsu World Champion as a black belt. One MMA veteran in a back seat has a record of over 115 matches. And another fighter, a Brazilian and IBJJF hall of famer, owns eight world titles. But they and the other 238 people, among them other prestigious martial artists, are all silent. Their position here takes them back to their first movements on the mats, as students.

We are at the beginning of the third day of the MMA Revolution 5.0 event, and most of these people have already spent serious money in products to improve theirs schools. But that was clear from day one.

“Who’s new here?” asked Irvin, during the introductory speech. Roughly forty percent of the crowd stood up. “Whoever has a $20 bill in their wallet, could you please bring it to me?” he continued. A line took shape, and for the next minute or so, he traded each $20 bill for a $100 bill. Then Irvin explained that yes, he will make money in exchange for knowledge during the next days. But he boldly claims that each dollar spent will multiply several times.

So a couple days passed by and courses about sales, pay-per-click ads, children and after-school programs, social media etc. were taught, and innovations on how to implement different, crazy types of technology were shown. During a sales presentation run by Marcos Avellan, a group of 47 owners who already bought the course stood up saying the program drove over 50,000 extra dollars since their staff began to use it. A few kept standing when the mark reached $100,000. And the line of them willing to walk to the microphone to issue spontaneous testimonials was getting to the size of one of the Disney attractions at the nearby Magic Kingdom amusement park.

At this point, even after the aforementioned sales example but not being here to hear all these testimonials I’ve heard thus far, you may be asking: “Will the Jiu-Jitsu and MMA schools with representatives in attendance capitalize on all the knowledge shared over the long weekend?” I’m sure the majority will. Just like I make sure to pay for my physical conditioning classes to make sure I will actually attend them, these school owners, many of them disciplined enough to become multiple-time champions in their styles, value their money spent and I bet they are now eager to get it back. Multiple times.

GMA member Alberto Crane recently went to France for a vacation and came back with another MMA win.

The leader of Gracie Barra schools in Burbank, Encino and Pasadena beat Aranick Montero with a heel hook at the Fighting Marcou Arena II, in Palavas Les Flots.

It was Crane’s third straight MMA win.

He now has a 15-5 record.

“It was fun”, said Crane.
