A 2007 world BJJ champion, and the second American to ever soar so high in the gentle art, Rafael Lovato is looking to add another big conquest to his career. After successfully migrating to MMA and sustaining an undefeated record with ten wins, the middleweight has gained a shot at the Bellator belt — but the challenge will be the biggest he’s ever faced in the cage.

Gegard Mousasi — a former champion in Strikeforce and Dream, and sitting middleweight champion of Bellator — will be Lovato’s opponent at Bellator 214, which is slated to take place Jan. 26 in California. They will share main event status with Fedor Emelianenko vs. Ryan Bader for the heavyweight belt.

Another BJJ champion has been announced as joining the ranks of the organization presided by Scott Coker. The outspoken AJ Agazarm of Gracie Barra, a 2014 no-gi world champion, told ESPN’s Ariel Helwani that he has signed a contract to debut in professional MMA soon.

Campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu no faixa-preta adulto em 2007, sendo o segundo americano a conquistar tal feito, Rafael Lovato parte em busca de mais uma grande conquista nos esportes de luta. Após migrar com sucesso para o MMA e sustentar um cartel invicto com dez sucessos, o peso médio foi escalado para lutar pelo cinturão do Bellator, mas o desafio será o maior de sua carreira nos cages.

Gegard Mousasi, ex-campeão do Strikeforce, Dream e ex-atleta do UFC, dono do cinturão dos médios da organização, será o oponente de Lovato no Bellator 214, realizado no próximo dia 26 de janeiro, na Califórnia. O duelo, porém, será o coprincipal, já que a última luta da noite já está reservada para a colisão entre Fedor Emelianenko e Ryan Bader, valendo o título do GP peso pesado da organização.

Outro campeão de Jiu-Jitsu foi anunciado como reforço na organização presidida por Scott Coker. Ouro no Mundial Sem Kimono de 2014 e conhecido por ser um dos atletas de fala mais ácida no cenário da arte suave, AJ Agazarm, faixa-preta da Gracie Barra, anunciou, em entrevista a Ariel Helwani, da ESPN, que está com contrato assinado e fará, em breve, sua estreia no MMA profissional.

AJ Agazarm. IBJJF

AJ Agazarm, a black-belt from Gracie Barra weighing around 80kg, decided to test himself in the ultra-heavyweight division last month. It happened at the Denver International Open IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship, held on the 21st and 22nd.

Fighting opponents weighing over 100kg, he made it to the final against Alex Huddleston. After a lively match, Agazarm was declared the champion.

Ben Henderson at the 2014 Worlds No-Gi

Fight to Win Pro reached its 37th installment last Friday with an explosive main event between former lightweight UFC champion Benson Henderson and no-gi BJJ world champion AJ Agazarm. Bendo walked out with a win via unanimous decision.

AJ started attempting a flying triangle, competently foiled by Henderson. Henderson later almost sank a guillotine. In the end, Henderson’s takedown defenses kept him out of trouble and gave him the win.

In the co-main event, Gracie Barra’s Flavio “Cachorrinho” Almeida defeated Diogo Araújo by unanimous decision.

Dillon vs. AJ in Atlanta. IBJJF

Two BJJ fighters known for spicing up matches off the mats, Dillon Danis and AJ Agazarm have again faced off. At the Atlanta Spring Open, each beat their first opponents until they met in the medium heavyweight final.

Danis, who was recently hired by Bellator, doesn’t shy away from a good gi challenge. Agazarm, of Gracie Barra, went in for the kill, but ended up defeated by his Marcelinho Garcia-coached foe. You can see them go at it right here.

Dois faixas-pretas americanos conhecidos por apimentar suas disputas fora dos tatames, Dillon Danis e AJ Agazarm mais uma vez ficaram frente a frente no tatame. Em ação pelo Atlanta Open de Jiu-Jitsu, as feras bateram seus oponentes um por um, até se encontrarem na final do meio-pesado.

Dillon, companheiro de treinos de Conor McGregor e com contrato recém assinado com o Bellator, não deixa de vestir o kimono e disputar eventuais torneios de Jiu-Jitsu. AJ, nome conhecido da Gracie Barra, entrou na briga pelo título com tudo, mas acabou sobrepujado pelo faixa-preta de Marcelinho Garcia.

The co-main event saw ADCC champion João Assis fight Mikey Perez, who replaced Jeff Monson last-minute for the no-gi match. After many attempts at passing Perez’s guard, Assis won via unanimous decision to win the heavyweight belt.

Also victorious was Edwin Najmi. The black-belt under Rômulo Barral faced Nathan Mandelsohn, who replaced DJ Jackson. Najmi won via unanimous decision to win the welterweight belt.

The third edition of Submission Underground, held last night in Portland, Oregon, saw a main event between Dillon Danis and Aj Agazarm. Danis beat Agazarm in overtime. He had already performed better on regular time, attempting several takedowns and some leg attacks. Afterwards he challenged former UFC champion Jon Jones.

The co-main event saw Antônio Carlos “Cara de Sapato” Jr. achieve a nice submission on Garry Lee Tonon. The duel was a standup affair for a good while, until Carlos Jr. performed a flying triangle to force the tap-out.

Another great match saw UFC’s Chad Mendes defeat showman Jeff Glover. As usual, Glover got the crowd cheering with his acrobatics. But that was to no avail, as Glover sank a rear naked choke in overtime

The opening bout saw Gordon Ryan submit Joe Baize via armlock. To get to the submission, Ryan took Baize’s back and transitioned to the arm, ending the match before overtime could kick in.

The third iteration of grappling event Submission Underground is slated to go down Jan. 29 in Portland, Oregon. The main event will see Dillon Danis face no-gi world champion AJ Agazarm in a submission-only match.

UFC fighter and Olympian Hector Lombard will take on Danaher Death Squad member Garry Lee Tonon.

Tonon’s teammate Gordon Ryan will go head to head with two-time ADCC champion Jeff Monson.

UFC fighter Chad Mendes and Jeff Glover round out the card.

The third installment of Submission Underground, slated for Jan. 29 in Portland, Oregon, will feature a superfight between AJ Agazarm and Dillon Danis. The info comes from MMA Fighting’s Luke Thomas.

Agazarm of Gracie Barra has titles at the BJJ Pan and No-Gi Worlds. Dillon, a student under Marcelo Garcia and coach to Conor McGregor, was a brown-belt Pan and world champion, and recently won double gold at the No-Gi Pan.

Submission Underground is promoted by Chael Sonnen. Its Dec. 11 edition saw Jon Jones use his time off the UFC to submit Dan Henderson.

For most of that time, Shaolin opted to pull Tererê into guard and was able to control him for a whilte. But, playing on top, Tererê imposed his own pace and sought the guard pass, arriving at side control a couple of times. At the end, Shaolin attempted a choke with all his might, but it was not enough to rob Tererê of the win.

The co-main event pitted Garry Tonon against Gilbert Durinho. World BJJ champ Durinho started out strong, perfoming several takedowns and arriving at side control. Tonon kept cool and slowly imposed his own game, trying for his dangerous heel hooks. In the final five minutes, Tonon finally managed to sink the inside heel hook and forced Durinho’s surrender.

AJ Agazarm had another interesting bout against old Pride star Ikuhisa Minowa. After two minutes of studying and some taunting, the Gracie Barra black-belt sought the takedown and got to side control. Then he put his knee on Minowa’s belly and moved to the triangle, where he got the submission.

Following his triumph at the No-Gi Pan, Dillon Danis faced Checkmat’s Jackson Sousa. Sousa sought the takedowns and at one point was almost surprised by a guillotine. Danis also attempted to take down, and in one of those attempts he caught Sousa’s leg to sink the heel hook and end the fight.
