GRACIEMAG: How did this offer to face Zé Mario Sperry that’s been abuzz with the fans since yesterday come about?

FABIO GURGEL: Right, well they got me off the couch (laugh). I’d hurd murmurs of it, since there’d been some poll on the internet about who should face Zé Mario in the next supermatch, him having won his match in England and all. And the names that got the most votes were me and Rickson. I don’t feel like this is a mission for Rickson. Guy Neivens called me yesterday, and I accepted. It would be an honor. Aside from Marcelo [Garcia], I think Zé Mario is the guy with the most ADCC titles of anybody.

He has a win over Renzo, won the absolute there, has more tournament-format experience. Have you had any notable No-Gi matches?

I’ve only ever really been at the 1999 ADCC, where I lost to a Russian. The guy ran away the whole match. I only got to touch him with 20 seconds left—things that only happened in the Abu Dhabis of back then. But I don’t feel like I’m at any disadvantage at all. We’ll be going there to put on a good show for you guys. The odd part is that half an hour before Guy called me I was training No-Gi at Alliance. Every Friday is No-Gi day at the academy, a sort of casual Friday, without the suit jacket (laughs). So I’m always training, and you can be sure I’ll be in great physical shape.

You haven’t faced Zé Mario before. What are your expectations?

That’s the coolest part. Zé is the only guy from my generation who I haven’t faced yet. Murilo Bustamante, Amaury Bitetti, Ricardo Libório—I’ve faced them all. But I never did cross paths with Zé. Only at the 1997 Worlds were we supposed to face each other in the semifinals, but he ended up having to pull out because he wasn’t feeling well. So we’ve still got that one to account for.

Is this an unpredictable match or do you have a picture of what you two will be doing?

The two of us have similar styles. Like I said when joking with you yesterday, I could ask him to pull guard on me. I don’t think that’s going to happen, though (laughs). To me what I need to do is go in there with it in my head that I’m not just going to win, but give the crowd their kicks, to not let anyone down. I think that’s what he has in mind too, so it’ll be a great party. And the best part is that it should be in São Paulo. At least that’s what the forecast is; there’s a 90% likelihood it’ll be in our backyard. I like traveling with the athletes and all, but here in Brazil we’ll be able to promote the ADCC a lot better.

Any idea who’ll be in your corner?

Alliance has got its fair share of champions, so I’ll certainly have someone there to give me the right pointers. It could be Marcelo, Rubens Cobrinha or Romero Jacaré. We’ll see about that in training, depending on who stands out in tactical training. Truth is, having a cornerman hardly helps you at all. It’s not going to win the fight for you. I don’t win matches for them, and they don’t win matches for me. But it’ll be cool. Nor do I know who’s going to want to compete at the 2013 ADCC, but we’ll be looking into that; we have time. We also have to see who’ll be cornering our athletes, since I’ll be pretty focused on my match, getting ready to do my job.

GRACIEMAG: Como surgiu a proposta dessa superluta entre você e Zé Mario Sperry, que já começou a ouriçar os fãs desde ontem?

FABIO GURGEL: Pois é, me tiraram do sofá (risos). Eu já estava escutando um zunzunzum, pois havia uma enquete na internet sobre quem deveria enfrentar o Zé Mario na próxima superluta, ele que venceu sua superluta na Inglaterra. E os nomes mais votados no site foram o do Rickson e o meu. Acho que essa não é uma missão para o Rickson. O Guy Neivens ontem me ligou e aceitei, será uma honra. Tirando o Marcelinho (Garcia), acho que o Zé Mario é o maior vencedor de títulos do ADCC.

Ele vem de vitória sobre o Renzo, venceu o absoluto lá, tem mais experiência no formato do torneio. Você tem lutas sem kimono marcantes?

Eu só disputei mesmo o ADCC 1999, quando perdi para um russo lá. O cara ficava correndo a luta inteira, só consegui tocar nele faltando 20 segundos de luta, coisas de Abu Dhabi antigo. Mas não me sinto em desvantagem de forma alguma, vamos lá para dar um espetáculo bonito para vocês. O curioso é que meia hora antes de o Guy me ligar para fazer o convite eu estava treinando sem kimono na Alliance. Toda sexta é treino sem pano na academia, espécie de sexta-feira casual, sem paletó (risos). Então estou sempre treinando, e podem crer que estarei numa forma física excelente.

Você não lutou Jiu-Jitsu com o Zé Mario até hoje. Como fica a expectativa?

Isso é o mais legal. O Zé é o único cara da minha geração que eu não lutei, até agora. Murilo Bustamante, Amaury Bitetti, Ricardo Libório, todo mundo eu acabei tendo de encarar. Mas com o Zé eu nunca cruzei. Só no absoluto do Mundial 1997 que ele e eu devíamos ter lutado a semifinal, mas ele acabou sendo obrigado a abrir, estava passando mal. Então a gente estava se devendo essa.

É uma luta imprevisível ou já dá para visualizar a postura de ambos?

Somos dois lutadores de estilos bem parecidos. Como eu estava brincando com você ontem, posso pedir para ele me puxar para a guarda, mas não deve ocorrer (risos). O principal para mim é entrar lá com a mentalidade de não apenas vencer, mas dar giro para o público, para não ficar algo que decepcione ninguém. Acho que ele também pensa assim, então será uma grande festa. E o melhor é que deve ser em São Paulo. Pelo menos é a previsão, tem 90% de chances de ser aqui no quintal de nossa casa. Gosto de viajar com os atletas e tudo, mas aqui no Brasil vamos poder promover o ADCC de uma forma muito melhor.

Alguma ideia de quem será seu córner?

A Alliance está sempre bem servida de campeões, então certamente terei alguém me passando as dicas certas. Pode ser o Marcelinho, o Rubens Cobrinha ou o Romero Jacaré, vamos ver isso com os treinamentos, dependendo de quem se destacar ali dentro dos treinos táticos e tudo mais. Na verdade, córner não adianta quase nada, não é isso que ganha luta, nem eu ganho luta para eles nem eles vão ganhar para mim. Mas vai ser legal. Também não sei quem vai realmente querer lutar no ADCC 2013, mas vamos estudar isso, temos tempo. Também temos de ver quem fica no córner dos nossos atletas, pois eu estarei lá com a cabeça de certa forma na minha luta, me preparando para fazer o meu trabalho.

It’s been a good year for Vinny “Pezão” Magalhães. With three MMA wins under his belt, the black belt went on to take gold at this year’s ADCC, putting away Fabrício Werdum in the over-99kg division. Magalhães’s next challenge is an M-1 Global title defense against Mikhail Zayats.

“I didn’t train specifically for the ADCC at all,” he told the MMAJunkie website.

“I have goals for my career, mostly from my MMA career, so I could not put Abu Dhabi as a next goal. I just kept training MMA. Some guys they bring like five or six black belts, and they do like six to eight weeks of camp, just of Jiu-Jitsu. I could not afford to do that,” he added.

Now the black belt is getting ready to take on Zayats on October 14 in Phoenix.

“I saw him fight a couple times. He’s more of a ground guy too, but you never know with Sambo guys. They’re more ground guys, but they like to strike. He’s a Combat Sambo world champion so his style is similar to Fedor (Emelianenko),” he said on the website’s radio program.

O ano está bom para Vinny Magalhães, o Pezão. Com três triunfos no MMA, o faixa-preta faturou o ouro no ADCC, tendo derrotado Fabrício Werdum na final da categoria acima de 99kg. Agora, Pezão deve defender o cinturão do M-1 Global, contra Mikhail Zayats.

“Não fiz nenhum treinamento específico para o ADCC”, conta Pezão em entrevista ao MMAJunkie.

“Tenho objetivos para a carreira, principalmente em relação ao MMA, então não poderia colocar o ADCC como única meta. Apenas continuei treinando MMA. Alguns fizeram camps de seis a oito semanas apenas de Jiu-Jitsu e eu não pude me dar ao luxo de fazer isso”, completa.

Agora o faixa-preta se prepara para o desafio contra Zayats, que acontece no dia 14 de outubro, em Phoenix.

“Já o vi lutar algumas vezes. Ele também é um cara que luta mais no chão, mas nunca sabemos o que vai fazer um lutador de sambô. Eles são lutadores de chão, mas gostam de atacar com socos. Zayats é campeão do mundo de sambô e seu estilo é similar ao de Fedor Emelianenko”, encerra.
