Few spots remain open for the ADCC’s big event set for September 23 and 24 in Finland, and now there are even fewer, with Márcio André having been confirmed as a participant this Saturday.

A no-gi world champion and gi runner-up, Márcio André will replace Leozinho Vieira in the 66kg division, given that Vieira will be busy in a superfight opposite Chael Sonnen.

In his first appearance in an ADCC-held event, as a purple-belt, Márcio took silver in the 2013 Rio Trials, behind João Miyao.

Marcinho will be adding to a division that already features the likes of Rubens Cobrinha, Paulo Miyao, Augusto Tanquinho, Bruno Frazatto and AJ Agazarm.

The other name added this Saturday, in the 77kg division, is Leonardo “Cascão” Saggioro, a BTT representative. Meanwhile Tami Musumeci has bowed out of the women’s 60kg division.

Poucas semanas separam os fãs do Jiu-Jitsu de mais uma edição do ADCC em seu evento principal, que em 2017 será realizado em Helsinque, na Finlândia. Com as divisões praticamente fechadas, poucas vagas ainda sobram para sortudos convidados, e uma delas foi confirmada na noite deste sábado, dia 2, para as disputas que rolam nos dias 23 e 24 deste mês.

Márcio André, campeão mundial sem kimono e vice campeão mundial na faixa-preta em 2016, assume a vaga deixada por Leozinho Viera na categoria até 66kg, já que o líder da Checkmat subiu para a superluta do evento contra Chael Sonnen.

Em sua primeira apresentação em torneios organizados pelo ADCC, ainda na faixa-roxa, a fera da Nova União ficou com a prata na seletiva carioca para o evento, em 2013, superado na final pelo faixa-marrom João Miyao.

Marcinho entra para embolar a categoria dos mais levinhos contra nomes como Rubens Cobrinha, Paulo Miyao, Augusto Tanquinho, Bruno Frazatto, AJ Agazarm e outras feras.

Outro nome recém adicionado, desta vez até 77kg, é o de Leonardo “Cascão” Saggioro, faixa-preta da BTT. Entre as baixas, Tami Musumeci deixa a divisão até 60kg no feminino.

At 21, a BJJ brown-belt was dominant at the ADCC Trials held in Sao Paulo. It was Pablo Mantovani of Atos.

At the end of four intense matches, the youth bagged a spot in the main ADCC event of the year, in Finland. In the 66kg final he submitted Henrique Gomes (Nova União) with a choke from the back. Here are some of his thoughts on the breakthrough performance.

My BJJ comes in phases. There are moments I just want to play guard, and at others I just want to pass. I believe that, in order for an athlete to be the best, they must play well in all areas. Against Henrique I was working intensely on the bottom on knee and foot attacks, but he was defending well. When the points kicked in, I went up and imposed my passing game. On the top I stapled the half-guard and slowly gained the pass. From that moment I sank the kata-gatame and forced the opponent to yield the back. Then I noticed he was leaving his neck open, and I seized the chance to do the rear naked choke.

Next September, in Helsinki, Mantovani will be trying his luck at the ADCC division currently owned by Rubens “Cobrinha” Charles. No easy task, although Mantovani has brown belt titles from the No-Gi Worlds and no-gi and gi American Nationals.

Depois de vencer quatro lutas intensas, o jovem carimbou o passaporte para lutar no palco principal do ADCC 2017, programado para setembro, em Helsinque, Finlândia. Na disputa pelo primeiro lugar da categoria até 66kg, Pablo finalizou Henrique Gomes (Nova União) num justo estrangulamento pelas costas, como ele mesmo detalha.

“Meu Jiu-Jitsu é de fases, há momentos em que só quero fazer guarda e em outros só passar. Acredito que, para um atleta ser o melhor, ele precisa jogar bem em todas as áreas. Contra o Henrique, estava trabalhando intensamente por baixo ataques nos joelhos e nos pés, mas ele estava defendendo bem. Quando começou a valer pontos, subi e impus meu jogo de passagem. Por cima, grampeei a meia e fui ganhando a passagem. A partir desse momento, encaixei o katagatame e obriguei o adversário a dar as costas. Então notei que ele estava deixando o pescoço aberto e aproveitei para encaixar o mata-leão”, comenta Pablo, que treina Jiu-Jitsu há 13 anos, desde os 8 anos de idade.

Questionado sobre os adversários que deve encontrar na categoria até 66kg do ADCC 2017, que tem Rubens Charles “Cobrinha” como atual campeão, ele mostrou motivação para os desafios que o esperam.

“O Rubens tem um dos melhores jogos no peso até 66kg. A categoria conta com atletas duros e experientes, mas eu me preparei muito tempo para enfrentar esses adversários. Será uma honra lutar com grandes atletas, isso só vai fazer meu Jiu-Jitsu evoluir”, diz Pablo, que tem seus professores e também o americano Keenan Cornelius como inspirações.

Na faixa-marrom, Pablo já conquistou o Mundial Sem Kimono, o Nacional Americano com e sem kimono e diversos opens de Jiu-Jitsu, todos pela IBJJF.

The 2013 ADCC event in Beijing, China is still developing its roster as the existing athletes shift around. With a little over a month left to go, the October 19-20 championship is settling down fast.

In the -66kg division, black belt ADCC veteran Jeff Glover is out due to injury so the committee must work on another invitation to a lucky athlete. Glover’s exciting and entertaining style will be missed and we hope he recovers soon.

Black belt Samir Chantre from Caio Terra Association has expressed interest as well as brown belt Gianni Grippo from Marcelo Garcia JJ/Alliance. Both have been in contact with the organization and while the committee has a list of alternates on their mind, the suggestions of the public are always welcomed.
