Dominyka Obelenyte at the 2016 Pan

It seems like Dominyka Obelenyte will be able to defend her gold medals at the 2016 World Jiu-Jitsu championship.

The reigning black belt open class and heavyweight champion confirmed today that the injuries to her right knee sustained at the superheavy final of the 2016 Pan will not require surgery.

She texted GRACIEMAG.com and revealed the results of an MRI exam performed last week: “I have a ligament sprain, dislocated knee cap, and fluid build up.Injury isn’t great but I don’t need surgery! I’m still on crutches but I’m starting physical therapy this week.”

Dominyka got injured adjusting the triangle choke on Samela Lopes and could not compete in the open class final against Andresa Correa.

She also told us how important the Worlds are for her: “I would not be the same without Worlds. I haven’t missed it since I’ve been 12 years old.”

Dominyka became the youngest athlete to be an adult black belt open class champion, men or women, when she won in 2015 with 19 years old.

There were a lot of thrills in the black belt division before the big finals this Sunday at the 2016 Pan Jiu-Jitsu championship.

Luiz Panza

An odd snapping sound filled the IPIC Arena at the 2015 WPPJC and Felipe Pena immediately released the toehold on Luiz Panza’s right leg. Panza himself took a while to realize what had just happened and he even said he was ok to continue. That was when he looked down and saw his ankle bending awkwardly, evidence of a double fracture on his lower leg.

Panza was transported to a local hospital in Abu Dhabi and went into surgery a few days later. He knew he had a long road ahead. “It was hard times, I have to confess. Nevertheless, since the surgery I kept focused and did everything I could to be back competing, since physiotherapy until training,” says Panza.

After such a stressful situation, Panza tells us how he dealt with the psychological side of returning to Jiu-Jitsu: “It never crossed my mind that I was not going to be able to return. I knew I was going to have to go through this hard times and then come back stronger.”

Panza is known for his attacks to legs and feet of opponents, but that also makes his own legs vulnerable. Even so, he says he’s not afraid of anything: “I am going to try to play a more varied game, but if I find myself on that position I’ll go for it. What happened was an accident and I have no fear of happening again.”

The return to the big stage took place at the 2016 Pan and Panza won the superheavy division with a toehold attack to Alex Ceconi in the final.

Mea culpa. Because the focus is so much in the adult black belt division, we sometimes forget how many huge names were present at the masters division at the 2016 Pan.

We pay homage to all of those great competitors and look back into 5 big moments that took place this weekend at the Bren Events Center.

1. Xande Ribeiro won double gold at the master 1 division, winning both the superheavy division and the open class. Xande had to face two of the toughest opponents in Gustavo Pires and Rafael Barbosa. The seven-time world champion is still recovering from a chronic injury to his pubis, but has told our news team he’s still thinking of competing at the adult division at the 2016 Worlds.

2. Saulo Ribeiro awed the crowd with his flawless display of technique. The seoi nage on Chris Latino was an overall great moment of the 2016 Pan. Just like his brother, Saulo also won double gold, in his case at the master 3 division, winning the heavyweight and the open class.

3. Gracie Barra’s Flavio Almeida divides his time between teaching classes, running GB Scottsdale, in Arizona, being one of the top executives in the GB network, not to mention father of two and husband. Well, somehow he found time to return to the competition circus. This weekend, after two years and a half rehabilitating from a torn knee ligament and surgery, Flavinho put a great showing in Irvine to win double gold at the master 2 division, topping the heavyweight and the open class.

4. Carlos Terrinha worked full time as a referee during all four days of the 2016 Pan. The Gracie Barra black belt took a break on Sunday morning to compete at the master 4 division. Terrinha put all the hours of demanding action refereeing hundreds of matches and went for it to win double gold at the medium-heavy and the open class.

5. You know that Wellington Megaton is the only person to have competed as a black belt in all of the editions of the world championship since 1996. What you don’t know is that Megaton is naturally a competitor at the master 5 division. Still competing close to the highest level possible, when Mega returns to his age group, he usually sweeps the division. That’s what happened this weekend, when Mega won double gold at the featherweight and the open class.

First the male black belt finals

Then, the ladies, who also did nopt hold back anything on their matches.

The 2016 Pan Jiu-Jitsu championship is in the books.

Day 4 was filled with thrills from top to bottom until all champions were crowned at the adult black belt division.

The two standouts were Bernardo Faria and Andresa Correa.

For the second year in a row, Faria met Leandro Lo in the open class final and the match followed the same script as last year. Faria played on top, worked the pass and as Lo turtled, Bernardo put the hooks in and attacked the lapels to get the choke. This was Bernardo’s third absolute title at the Pan, something no other black belt has.

Bernardo talked about his duels with Lo: “I go in knowing that I can lose. So I give my best and keep going until I get on his side. Thank God it has worked well so far, but I have all the respect for him.”

In the female open class, an injury to Dominyka Obelenyte’s right knee prevented her from taking part in the final. Andresa was crowned champion and talked about the best moment of her career, with open class titles at the European and Pan: “It’s all a result of my dedication. I drive everyday from my city to the capital of Sao Paulo. I have to deal with traffic, rain, cold. Despite how tiring it is, I never gave up”.

Day 3 of the 2016 PAN was a roller coaster of emotions that eventually peaked with the black belt open class, male and female.

In the end, Leandro Lo and Bernardo Faria will repeat 2015’s final while teammates Dominyka Obelenyte and Andresa Correa will met in the ladies final.

Faria submits all, Lo upsets Galvão 

The adult male black belt open class division was a gathering of stars and they started to shine early. Luiz Panza returned for his first major event after almost a year healing a broken leg. He made his way to the quarterfinals with victories over Kitner Moura, Mahamed Aly and James Puopolo. Tim Spriggs was on fire and met João Gabriel Rocha in another quarterfinal. It was a match that draw blood out of João’s mouth. Spriggs 5-2 win was a surprise for some. Before that, Rocha had beaten the always tough Murilo Santana. Leonardo Nogueira reached his quarterfinal beating Alessandro Ferreira 5-0 with a sweep and guard pass and Abraham Marte (6-0). His opponent would be André Galvão, who had finished Aaron Johnson and Alex Cecconi.

Leandro Lo made to his quarterfinals after choking Danny Guy from the half guard and beating Guilherme Soares 3-0. Good friends, Panza made way to Lo for a spot in the semis. Bernardo Faria was deadly. He finished every one of his opponents. First he used his sneaky leg lock on Erza Lenon then he caught Victor Silverio in a triangle and finally repeated the leg lock on Gabriel Arges. In the semifinal against Spriggs, a Ezequiel choke was responsible for securing Faria’s spot in the final once again. The semifinal between Lo and Galvão did not see a lot of movement, but Lo was able to sweep and then use his unbelievable guard game to hold back Galvão and qualify for his third final in three years.

Dominyka back with a boom; Andresa keeps consistent

Since her impressive campaign at the 2015 Worlds, when she won both the heavyweight and the open class, Dominyka Obelenyte kept relatively away from the competition circuit. She returned this Saturday and displayed her well known game filled with pressure and creativity. Dom’s first victim was Talita Nogueira, finished with an armbar inside the triangle. Her opponent in the semifinal would be Mackenzie Dern, coming from finishing Leah Taylor with a toe hold and beating Fernanda Mazzelli 2-0 on advantages after a tough match. The semifinal was thrilling and also close. In the end, Dominyka was able to score one sweep more than her opponent to win 10-8.

On the other side of the bracket, Andresa Correa finished Amanda Loewen with a toe hold and Hillary Vanornum with a choke from the back. When Tami Musumecia and Beatriz Mesquita were both DQed for playing the double sitting guard for too long, Andresa jumped to the final.

Meregali and Basilio ruler over the brown belt division

In the brown belt division, Nicholas Meregali and Bianca Basilio were the standouts, Basilio outscored Nathiely de Jesus 2-0. Meregali gave no rest to Guthemberg and eventually managed a bow and arrow choke from the back.

The highlights of Day 2 of the 2016 Pan Jiu-Jitsu championship were the female blue belt and purple belt divisions.

All weight classes played out until champions were crowned, including the open class winners.

In the blue belt division, JR Academy’s Emily Sheil topped the absolute after finishing Halie Tucker with an armbar.

Sheil finished third on the lightweight division to end the day with a gold medal and a bronze medal.

In the purple belt division, Gabrielle McComb rose to the top of the open class after beating Heloisa Ferreira in the final.

With an advantage for a near-takedown, McComb secured the gold medal to complete her day at the Bren Events Center, in Irvine, CA.

Before that, Gabrielle closed out the featherweight with Gracie Humaita’s teammate, Brenda Heller.

Day 1 of the 2016 Pan Jiu-Jitsu championship ran smoothly this Thursday at the Bren Events Center, in Irvine, California.

White belts, blue belts and purple belts took over the 12 mats and put on a great show for the packed stands.

The highlights of the day were the blue belt and the purple belt adult male open class divisions.

Among the blue belts, glory went to Barbosa Jiu-Jitsu’s Eduardo Lopes, who won both the absolute and the ultra-heavy division.

In the final match of the open class, Lopes finished Cicero Costha’s André Porfírio after passing the guard and reaching side control.
