Jon Jones: Daniel Cormier is in ‘bad shape,’ just wants to be famous

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones hates answering questions about heavyweight fighter Daniel Cormier.

The reason why, Jones told on Tuesday, is because Cormier is irrelevant in the 205-pound champ’s point of view.

“I don’t think he wants to work hard,” Jones said. “I just think he wants to be famous.”

Cormier said last week that once he gets through Roy Nelson in their UFC 166 co-main event, he wants to “cut the line” and get a shot at the light heavyweight belt against Jones. This comes after other comments Cormier made about Jones, in which he talked about dropping to 205 pounds after making sure he can make a healthy weight cut.

Now, Cormier said, he is positive he can shed the weight necessary compete in the lighter weight division.

“I’m hoping my body of work speaks for itself,” Cormier told a fan on Twitter when asked about whether or not he deserves a shot at Jones.

The champ, however, doesn’t see it that way. Jones pointed to Cormier’s body frame as evidence of the former Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix winner’s laziness. The tactic Cormeir is using, Jones said, is one devised solely to gain more popularity on the internet.

“He’s trying to get his Twitter followers up. That’s about it,” Jones claimed.

Shaking his head and expressing his irritation with addressing the “DC” topic, Jones explained that the 205-pound class already has a plethora of fighters. Despite his hate for answering questions about Cormier, Jones had a clear opinion about the heavyweight and where he stands in the 265-pound division.

“I hate answering questions about him. He’s just not relevant to me,” Jones said. “There are so many great fighters in the light heavyweight division. He’s not even top five in his division.

“He has short reach, bad cardio. He looked terrible in his last fight. It’s like I’m not worried about him at all.”
