It’s a wrap at the European Championship, which ran Jan. 15 through 20 in Portugal. Over 4,000 athletes stepped on the mats set up at the Odivelas Multiusos Pavilion throughout the week, with the event reaching its climax this Sunday.
The day’s big victors, Gustavo Braguinha (Atos) and Nathiely de Jesus (Rodrigo Pinheiro), took double gold.
Our Instagram followers had Gustavo Braguinha as the underdog prior to his facing Lucas Lepri, with just 20% of the votes. But the fight developed with Braguinha not leaving much in the way of space for his opponent. The Atos fighter imposed his game and dominated throughout, amassing ten points to Lepri’s zero.
Nathiely de Jesus was just as successful. After finishing Claire-France Thevenon in the heavyweight final with a foot lock, she had the momentum going into the absolute final against Luiza Monteiro. A 4-4 tie on points was broken by Nathiely’s 3-1 lead on advantages.
Also noteworthy were the golden submissions achieved by Fellipe Andrew, Rudsonn Mateus, Ffion Davies and Samanta Cook, as well Levi Jones-Leary’s win over Lucas Lepri for the lightweight title via split decision.
