Paulo Miyao and Gianni Grippo are two of the toughest brown belts in world Jiu-Jitsu. And fate would have it that their paths crossed in the featherweight division of the 2013 European Open, where they had a back-and-forth battle in 50/50 guard. In the end the scoreboard read one advantage apiece.
Watch the match and join the debate: is the 50/50 guard hindering Jiu-Jitsu, like a lot of people are saying, or is it just another stage in the art’s evolution? Watch and comment!
The worst display of jiu jitsu I have seen to win a major competition.
It's all very ugly, I see no sense in that, and boring to watch
Introduce heel hooks and the nonsense will stop.
Lots of folks are thinking the same in general I feel. http://joshua-palmer.com/am-i-starting-to-dislike-brazilian-jiu-jitsu/
What a terrible 'advert' for BJJ.
Carlos, Carlson and Helio must be turning in their graves.
Im glad you said that Dave! I watched it the other day and as a relative BJJ newbie I wondered if I was missing something?! I might prescribe it to my patients as a cure for insomnia.
Exciting stuff :-/ disappointing.
gripping
I totally agree with Chris Andrade below! Bring heel hooks in and this will stop!! 9minutes of this is a poor advert for the sport! I hate 50/50 guard!
You lot have put me off watching it, I don't want to waste 9mins of my life watching 2 guys sat on there butts
