If you were the judge, who would you give the nod?

GRACIEMAG.com kept tabs on MMA fans’ reaction to the Alistair Overeem-Fabrício Werdum fight, whether on our own website or social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. The fight went down this Saturday in Dallas, where the latest round of the Strikeforce heavyweight GP was held.

In a lukewarm affair featuring more strategy than action, each fighter did his best to avoid dealing with the other’s strong points. Werdum repeatedly summoned his opponent to the ground, with Overeem just telling him to get up. Moments of impact were few and far between. Overeem stayed on his feet more but did little to attack. Once the scorecards were in, Alistair got the nod by unanimous decision.

Regardless of the quality of entertainment on display in the fight, there were a number of fans who didn’t agree with the outcome. In their view the black belt did more to attack, while Overeem was resigned to defend.

“I feel Werdum won,” tweeted @romulobarral.

Everytime Overeem threw a punch, Werdum fell down. He was pretending to be hurt so that Overeem would follow him to the ground. Sure, that’s great and everything, but how does that look to the judges?

Overeem basically scored about 30 knockdowns due to strikes and about 10 takedowns in the eyes of the judges. Werdum had a good strategy, provided that he got the submission win, but he didn’t.

You can’t play “rope-a-dope” for the entire fight and then expect to win on points. The point is to get the KO (or sub in this case) which he didn’t get.
