Gracie #131

A farewell to Ryan

GRACIE Magazine remembers the warrior’s great moments through eye-witness accounts and a photo gallery to fill the hearts of fans, friends and even enemies with emotion. It also features the No-Gi World Championship, Super Challenge Grappling and much more.

The seventh day mass ended moments ago at the Sao Jose church, in the Jardins region of Sao Paulo. Full of sorrow, with faces swollen from tears, Renzo Gracie, Kyra Gracie and Marcio Feitosa exit the church. The three don’t hesitate to pose for the GRACIEMAG.com camera. The t-shirt they wear is an homage to brother, uncle and friend Ryan. The photo of the Gracie smiling and his guard up high is accompanied by the phrase: “When the man is confused with the legend, the myth is born.” GRACIE Magazine, surprised by the news of his death, considered the best way to pay homage to Ryan. It opted to show great photos of him, along with accounts of his life from those who knew this controversial character best.

Snow is something rare in Los Angeles and its surrounding area. When it comes, it is deservedly featured on the headlines of newspapers and in hours of coverage on the television. On December 15, it reared its head yet again. If it wasn’t all over California, at least it was there in the University of California Dominguez Hills gymnasium. The big name of the first No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu world championship really was big. Jeff Monson, who brought to the contest with him the title of two-time ADCC champion, was defeated in his weight category, got mad, and decided to fight in the absolute. He left with the gold, and GRACIE Magazine tells you all about it.

Meanwhile, in Sao Paulo… Super Challenge Grappling spared neither effort nor resources in putting together a bona fide submission grappling spectacle deserving of the “world class” seal. With great performances from such stars of the grappling world as Andre Galvao, Demian Maia, Tarsis Humphreys, Luiz Big Mac and grand champion Xande Ribeiro, the evening of December 8th rewarded all those present at the Paulistano Athletic Club with a treat of grappling excellence. Like icing on the cake, GRACIE Magazine even features an exclusive training session nobody has ever seen.

The Training Program this month is brought to you by Demian Maia. The Brasa instructor, and UFC fighter, shows over seven days the many ways you can win a fight when on your adversary’s back.

In the Performance column, Martin Rooney goes back to the basics and proves how rolling and stretching work together in preventing injuries in athletes.

In the GMA section, we splice together stories of associates that show how similar objectives can bring together the most diverse of backgrounds.

In the Agenda, one tough hundred year old, a female fighter teaching what’s Wrong and Right, Jiu-Jitsu in the Emirates and Tici is concerned with hygiene in the sport.

In the Academy, Fury FC champion Rousimar Toquinho, during his final days as a brown belt, shows us a foot lock that’s already wreaked havoc both in the gi and in the ring. In the Opinion, Jiu-Jitsu is changing lives and dispelling differences.

In Gracie Diet find out how to make a tropical supper.

See you next month!
