Open your eyes and improve your JJ

Braulio Estima discloses the invisible Jiu-Jitsu, Royler Gracie helps you to escapes from the mount and much more!

From the chilly city of Birmingham, in the north of England, a wily Brazilian from Pernambuco had the solution for the GRACIE Magazine #130 cover story. Braulio “Carcara” Estima needs no introduction. His name is a sure thing on any list of ten best athletes currently competing in Jiu-Jitsu – for his astounding technique. Well aware of the sources of wisdom at our disposal, we took advantage of them. How about an article signed by him revealing the invisible Jiu-Jitsu – those details that almost no one is aware of, but that oftentimes determine whether a bout ends in victory or defeat. And as there’s no such thing as too much help, beasts like Leo Vieira, Xande Ribeiro and Demian Maia also put in their 2 cents worth. Enough? No way! Carcara sent in positions and Rubens “Cobrinha” Charles, two-time world champion, also unveiled some of his inventions, as well as those of other champions.

Keeping with the invisible, but very valuable, we met up with Fernando Terere, a synonym for entertaining Jiu-Jitsu till midway through the decade. Those who’ve watched him fight miss him terribly, those that haven’t hope for his speedy return. GRACIE Magazine’s meeting with Terere made a few things clear: he’s happy, but still nowhere near competing in Jiu-Jitsu again. Even so, the afternoon spent at the top of Cantagalo hill celebrating the former star’s birthday left room for hope. Check it out for yourself.

The January issue doesn’t come to a close without a best-of list. Ours is short, with but three names, but what names. In the gi, a Gracie, without the gi, an American from Itu; and in the gloves, a Spider. Find out who they are and why they deserve the post of best of 2007 at what they do.

Royler Gracie is the instructor invited to teach GRACIE Magazine’s monthly training program. Straight from Humaita, after some unforgettable holidays surfing in Indonesia, Royler taught no less than six escapes from the mount in the Training Program. So you’ll never have to feel the weight bearing down on you again.

Spread throughout the world and with millions of practitioners, Jiu-Jitsu is in constant motion. GRACIE Magazine brings you coverage of the Brazilian Team Championship and South American Championship that took place in November. Find out who stood out in Sao Paulo and on the outskirts of Florianopolis.

Martin Rooney is a smashing success and champion of GRACIE Mag reader mail. This month, the theme is strength and the lesson proves how there are even secrets tucked away in the obvious. In the section ascribed to GRACIE Magazine Associates, an interview with a Swede, a Southern Brazilian, an American and a Brazilian from Bahia and the discovery they have much in common beyond Jiu-Jitsu. Find out how the art brought people of such different backgrounds together.

In the Opinion column, American Mike Fowler explains why all athletes should come to Brazil at least once, as though it were the Meca of Jiu-Jitsu. In the Academy, Omar Salum sends a sweet hook-sweep from Manaus.

In the Agenda, more Right and Wrong, submissions from the World Championships; a manual for you to never fall again; how to take advantage of everything GRACIE Magazine can provide you financially; and Tici is back breaking down the issue of GH.

That’s all for this month… what an upcoming year we will have! Enjoy your reading.
