05.11.2008 GRACIEMAG #140An everyday champion
GRACIEMAG 140 tells the story of Jiu-Jitsu’s revelation of the year, as well as all the coverage from the No-Gi Pan, the US Open and Helio Gracie’s 95th birthday party.

Sergio Moraes doesn’t have a problem talking about his origins. The 2008 middleweight world champion cracks a broad smile when speaking of the Cohab 2 projects, in Jose Bonifacio, at Sao Paulo’s eastern extreme. After submitting Kron Gracie in June and following up by taking the title, Sergio took front and center in the vote for revelation of the year. Going all out in finding out what there is to know about the champion’s life, GRACIEMAG hopped the train to Sao Paulo’s periphery, and spoke with friends and family, to bring readers all the details of the career path of this champion who is just as down to earth as he is talented.

Helio Gracie turned 95 at the start of October. GRACIEMAG didn’t squander the chance to register the grandmaster’s birthday that took place in the historic Gracie academy at Padre Antonio Vieira high school, in Humaita, Rio de Janeiro. With sons Royler, Rickson and Rolker present, as well as other family members like Kyra Gracie, Carlos Robson and Robsinho, the party boasted a cake confectioned according to Gracie diet guidelines, red belt with gold-leaf stripes and toothy smiles all around. Even an interview, the master of masters conceded.

With Jiu-Jitsu ever more entrenched in the USA, there seems to be no end to new Jiu-Jitsu competitions popping up. In September, the first No-Gi Pan to be held in New York took place. Already a success, the competition included participations from such notable beasts as Rolles Gracie, Braulio Estima and Rubens “Cobrinha” Charles. GRACIEMAG was there and brings you the most gripping of images.

In Training Program, we head back to the Cohab 2 projects. With an impressive grasp of the gentle art, the Alliance black belt put together a week of exercises to perfect the spider guard in a blink of an eye.

In the GMA column, Renzo Gracie demonstrates a position. Managing Tip comes from Portugal, profile from the USA and GMA Arena debuts. In Newsroom, news from all around the world.

In Agenda, the report on the film about Renzo’s life, lessons from Pedro Hemetério, Right and Wrong by Fabio Leopoldo and why Jiu-Jitsu makes you smarter.

You can also check out the best from US Open XIII, straight from California and the Opinion column with Georges St-Pierre speaking about his black belt in Jiu-Jitsu.
