GRACIE Magazine #134

Galvao crowned, Kron a-coming

Special
As you know, Jiu-Jitsu, beyond being a sport, is a philosophy of life. Those who live Jiu-Jitsu guarantee that the teachings of Carlos and Helio Gracie are the path to better living. GRACIE Magazine, however, goes a good deal further and tells the stories of characters who have had their lives saved by the gentle art, literally.

Pan 2008
Two weeks before the 2008 Pan-American, Andre Galvao was in Sao Paulo, training at Brasa headquarters, but with his head in Las Vegas, where the previous three months he was doing groundwork with Wanderlei Silva and heading for a possible MMA debut. He didn’t seem too enthused about fighting in a gi. Fast-forward about 15 days and the black belt was being crowned in the California State University Dominguez Hills gymnasium, in Carson, California. Medium heavyweight and absolute champion, Galvao yet again made it clear he’s one of the biggest names in Jiu-Jitsu these days. The Pan also was consolidation of a name for the sport’s future. GRACIE Magazine, unfearing, announces that a new star is arising. Kron Gracie submitted all his adversaries to take the middleweight and absolute categories at brown belt. Even so, a patient Rickson guaranteed the world would still see his son fight as a brown belt at the Worlds. Black, only next year. GRACIE Magazine was in California and tells everything there’s to tell about the greatest Pan of all times.

Training Program
Returning to the Pan, Fabio Gurgel fought and destroyed his adversaries in the senior 1 category. Before his trip, the leader of Alliance taught another lesson, this time to GRACIE Magazine readers. In one week and five positions, Gurgel teaches how to escape the armbar – whether it’s a simple threat or a fully extended arm.

Theory and Practice
Is Jiu-Jitsu instinct, or training and repetition. The best answer would be: An ace is one who trains a lot and thus makes room for instinct to do its thing. Keeping to this premise, GRACIE Magazine sought to find out from some gi-wearing wizards how one can hone one’s instinct and make it a sharper weapon in a fight.

Face to Face: Joinha
He just turned 50, but has lived and seen it all and, you could say, has talked with pretty much everyone. Jorge Guimaraes trained with Rolls, Rickson and Carlinhos Gracie. He was a presenter on TV, commentator anand is now a successful agent – with two UFC belts under contract to him. GRACIE Magazine shot the breeze with Joinha so he could tell a bit of what he’s lived through and seen. And he told us.

GMA
With the launch of the new site (graciemag.com/gma), the GRACIE Magazine Association has even greater space to give an image and a voice to the agents spreading Jiu-Jitsu’s message around the world. At the 2008 Pan, we did just that. In this month’s article, we cover the performances of our associates in the competition, making it clear that it’s not just the adult black belts who make up a great event.

Training for Warriors
Martin Rooney returns to the subject of the armbar and teaches what one should practice to strengthen the movements that make one a burly arm catcher.

In the Academy
In this In the Academy, a novelty. Luca Atalla went to the inauguration of Ricardo “Cachorrao” Almeida’s newest academy, in New Jersey. From there, he witnessed and documented Renzo Gracie, Alexandre Soca and Cachorrao himself demonstrating positions. Thus the Lesson in Print was born, a unique registree of grandmasters doing what they do best – transmitting their knowledge.

Gracie Diet

Opinion
In closing, our correspondent Nalty Jr. put Dana White against the wall and found out what the big boss of the UFC sees in MMA’s future.
