Gesias left out of Dynamite!! Dynamite!! 2008 started off with bad news for Brazilian fans. But this time it wasn't for one of their compatriots being knocked out, but because a fight was canceled. Minutes prior to the event, held today in the Saitama Super Arena, in Japan, Gesias Cavalcante made his way into the ring to announce his much-anticipated fight with Joachim Hansen would not take place. According to JZ, the Norwegian had not passed the medical exams performed hours earlier. Furthermore, according to information from Japan, Hansen had been hospitalized with a head injury.
This was the second big change to the card at the last minute. Initially scheduled to fight Mark Hunt, Jerome Le Banner alleged to be injured and was substituted with Melvin Manhoeff. All the worse for Mark Hunt, who was knocked out in only 18 seconds.
One to do well was Mirko Cro Cop. The former policeman was not intimidated by Hong Man Choi's 2.19 meters in height and beat the South Korean by technical knockout at 6:32 min of the first round.
Two more big stars also ended the year with MMA wins. Back in K-1 (organization responsible for Dynamite!!) after a year and a half away, Bob Sapp participated in a bizarre bout with Akihito "Kinniku Mantaro" Tanaka, who represented a cartoon character popular in Japan. The former American football player won by technical knockout at 5:22 min of the first round.
Now Semmy Schilt, a Dutch three-time K-1 World GP winner (05/06/07) showed he is dangerous in MMA as well as he submitted Mighty Mo with an unlikely triangle in the first round.
In the bout that followed, Alistair Overeem brought justice to the ill-tempered Badr Hari, World GP runner-up. After the win, the winner didn't drop the ball: "Here it is: for all MMA fighters, the whole world to see, for those who believe respect is important," said Overeem, in reference to Hari's controversial behavior and statements. The Moroccan was fiercely criticized for having continued to hit Remy Bonjaski while on the ground in the final of the World GP. Beforehand, he had belittled the current level of MMA fighters.
The last two matches of Dynamite!! were planned as presents for the Japanese fans. Local hero Shinya Aoki recovered from his surprising loss in Dream and submitted Eddie Alvarez with a heel hook at 1:32 min of the first round.
Shortly thereafter the main event took place, between two idols in the Land of the Rising Sun. Curiosly, the fight between Kazushi Sakuraba and Kiyoshi Tamura was the only MMA bout requiring the opinion of the judges. Tamura was given the nod with a unanimous decision.
