29.12.2008 White doesn’t guarantee Anderson vs ThalesUFC president evasive in responding to journalists While Thales Leites’ team says a light heavyweight-title dispute with Anderson Silva is as good as done, UFC president Dana White does not pass on the same confidence. When the subject was brought up at the UFC 92 press conference, this past Saturday, the UFC top dog was evasive: “Probably,” White said, without guaranteeing the all-Brazilian bout had been sealed.
What is certain is the date for the April show, which will be the 18th, in Montreal, Canada.
Another piece of news to arise over the weekend is the possibility of Randy Couture returning the light heavyweight division. Since leaving retirement, when he decided to challenge Tim Sylvia for the heavyweight title belt, the veteran has not performed in the category now led by Rashad Evans.
“I could (fight at light heavyweight). I’m weighing around 220 pounds, the same as when I would cut weight to fight at light heavyweight before. That’s why it’s a possibility, should an interesting fight come about, and it made sense,” Couture stated.
Couture also discarded the idea of a 220 pound weight class being created. "The variety of sizes of guys is something that makes the decision very interesting. The bigger guys pose interesting problems. The smaller guys have other things they have to think about, too. I don't think that we need another weight class, necessarily,” Couture is quoted as saying on MMAJunkie.com.
