27.12.2008 World Professional JJ Cup in MayTournament pay-out over 100 thousand dollars After an end of the year with more than attractive prize money for gentle art competitors in the Middle East (Asian Super Cup and Capital Challenge), 2009 is showing signs of being another prosperous year for Jiu-Jitsu practitioners. And anyone who wishes to can start training hard right after New Year’s, since the 1st and 2nd of May will be the maiden World Professional JJ Cup in Abu Dhabi.
Event organizer Carlao Santos informed GRACIEMAG.com that total prize money for the event will be 111 thousand dollars. To the Carioca black belt, it will be more than just a “championship,” but a “Jiu-Jitsu show.”
“The World Professional JJ Cup will be a show. We are treating this event not just as a championship, but a BJJ mega show: 111 thousand dollars in prizes, besides six qualifiers in the lead up. This will be the first Pro BJJ mini-circuit in history. We will have a qualifying tournament in Brazil, for all of South America. In North America, there will be one in Florida and another in Canada. After that there will be one in Japan and another in Spain, for Europe, and in Australia. April 30 will be the opener and May 1 and 2, the Pro Worlds,” explained Carlao.
And speaking of shows, the stars to participate cannot be left out. Excited with the preparations underway, Carlao promises 2009 will have even better infrastructure that that of this year. “The competition will be the best and most professional possible. The fighters can expect, as they will be treated as stars, to be received as great sportsmen. Especially since the event will be covered by TV channels from several parts of the world. There will be television channels from Europe, Brazil, Japan, Australia covering the event. The champions will become Jiu-Jitsu superstars,” said Carlao in finishing.
