Saturday is UFC 91, in Las Vegas, with the bout between Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar headlining the event. Nevertheless, there is another bout that is attracting attention in North America too: the bout between undefeated Demian Maia and Nate Quarry. In the States concentrating on his fight already for the last few weeks, Demian told GRACIEMAG.com of his preparations for facing off against the American fighter: “It’s like I always do, two hard training sessions every day. Nearing the day of the fight they become more intense and a bit shorter. Further from the fight, not so intense and a little longer base training.” The black belt also told how he is training with Wanderlei Silva’s physical conditioning coach, Rafael Alejarra, who puts him through arduous sessions meant to provide exceptional wind in the fight. Besides the well-known trainer, Demian took with him his boxing coach, Lopes, and had backup from muay thai and wrestling coaches, as well as support from Wanderlei Silva in the technical department. With well-honed Jiu-Jitsu that has drawn praise even from his adversary, days before the bout, Demian reaffirmed his intention of getting the submission. “I want to get another submission, as I always do, and to have the best fight possible, as always. Regardless of what happens, I’m going to put my heart into it.” On the evening’s main event (Couture vs Lesnar), the Brazilian gave his prediction. “I think Lesnar is a really tough guy. Around here in the States, most people are saying Lesnar is favored to win. But I think Couture is a bit of a favorite. I’d give 60% to Couture and 40% to Lesnar,” Demian opined.

The black belt’s stock is fast rising in the world of MMA, as Demian has been on a roll thus far. Perhaps even more impressive than the fact he has remained undefeated in his eight-fight professional career is the fact that in all three of his outings in the UFC he has taken home with him the coveted, and lucrative, “submission of the night” prize, the last time being against another fighter who had won the honor in his last fight, Jason MacDonald. Would a fourth “submission of the night” award in his fourth UFC fight be too much to ask?
