Evander Holyfield has set his sights on another feat. At 46, he will try and become the oldest fighter ever to win the world title. The veteran was announced as the adversary for Nikolay Valuev, current holder of the World Boxing Association title. The one to break the news to Fightnews.com was Valuev’s coach. “The bout between Valuev and Holyfield will take place December 20th, in Zurich (Switzerland),” said Boris Dimitrov to the website.
“The contract has not yet been signed, but there are no better options for the fight. In two weeks everything will be figured out,” promised the manager. “Up until November 16th Valuev will be training in Russia. After that we’ll take off for final preparations in Germany.”
Should he conquer the title, Holyfield will break the record currently held by George Foreman, heavyweight champion at 45 years of age.
Valuev, holder of a record of 49 wins and just one loss, is coming off a triumphant bout with American John Ruiz, against whom he recaptured the WBA belt. Now Holyfield (42 wins, nine losses and two draws) will be trying to come back from his defeat to Sultan Ibragimov. On the occasion, the veteran missed out on a chance to become the oldest champion ever, as a win would have meant capturing the World Boxing Association (WBO) title.
