Tony de Souza arrived at UFC 66 with the intention of securing his second victory in a row since his return to the American organization. However, a knee parried away by the Brazilian Thiago "Pitbull" Alves meant the third defeat in the career of the Peruvian fighter, known in Brazil as Mendigo.
In an interview with GRACIEMAG.com, the athlete, who trains at Nova União when in Rio de Janeiro, spoke about the fight and the subsequent charge by the Nevada State Athletic Commission that Thiago used banned substances.
What did you think of the fight?
Tony: It was a learning experience. I've needed to change my style for a long time now. It was clear that people have been studying my game. Now I'm even more excited about training, learning new things.
And what did you think about Thiago Alves' use of banned substances before the fight?
I don't think that influenced the result. He came prepared to beat me and did. He simply had a better plan, executed it and got the best of me that day. To be honest, I hope he gives that stuff up, it will only hurt him down the road.
And how are you physically?
I am already training again. The injuries looked a lot more serious than they really were.
