ADCC 2011: The day Toquinho “subbed” twice in one match

In England, at ADCC 2011 UFC fighter Rousimar Toquinho showcased just why he’s a born finisher, nabbing people with his heelhook left and right.

In this riveting under-88kg-division match against David Avellan, once again the Minas Gerais, Brazil native celebrated finishing a single matchup twice, just like he’s done before in the octagon. For all the ins and outs of ADCC 2011, only in GRACIEMAG. (With the collaboration of Junior Samurai)

I love ya gracie mag but c’mon…Toquinho didnt’ sub Avellan twice. Toquinho had a heel hook on, when Avellan rolled out of bounds. Adcc rules say the competitors can roll out bounds “once” to flee a submission, without any point deduction. The referee clearly stopped the action after they rolled out of bounds, as you can see in the video. But for some reason, Toquinho got confused and started to torque on Avellan’s heel again. Avellan had already stopped defending against the heal hook because the ref stopped them. The action had been stopped when Toquinho started to crank on Avellan’s heel again.

After that weird spastic incident by Toquinho, the fighters were started in a completely different (advantageous to Toquinho) heel hook position. Avellan should never have agreed to that new position. But he did, and he got subbed. Once.

I like Toquinho, and I’m not even a David Avellan fan. I just hate to see bad coverage of an event. The way that match happened was poor, in terms of Toquinho’s actions when the ref had already stopped them, and in terms of the referee’s restart of the action. If you watch the video, you can clearly see all of this.

So, next time Gracie Mag, watch the video before you give it a title.

Toquinho’s history of holding onto submissions should be the focus of the article. whether in a tournament or in MMA. he’s been sanctioned before for this type of behavior. the “in the heat of the moment” excuse only works so many times. he uses it whenever he wants to cripple or maim an opponent. sure, the referee is there and should be in charge of stopping the action. the VERBAL INSTRUCTION TO STOP is every bit as legitimate as WELL AS literally PRYING his hands off to stop. Toquinho’s humble, uh, me poor, work in field’s routine is wearing thin after seeing MULTIPLE videos of him holding onto submissions far too long.

Rousimar is the “Foot Collector”! :-)

You, dear reader (Bad Title), are correct. Toquinho didn’t get the submission twice… but he thought he did. The title was in the figurative sense. In the UFC, as well, he “thought” he won his fight twice. Best wishes!

toquinho is maniac!! i used to like him but now…..

Thank you for your post, Marcos. The referee should have shown more professionalism as well. If he really wanted Rousimar to stop, he could have pulled his hand off. He also could have made sure they were restarted from the appropriate position.

GRACIEMAG THIS ISNT MMA! NORMALLY PUTTING UR HANDS ON A GUY WILL END THE ACTION. ARE U SAYING THAT THE REF HAD TO WRESTLE AWAY PAUL HARRIS’ GRIP TO END A SUBMISSION HOLD THAT IS OUT OF BOUNDS? THIS WASNT A CAGE FIGHT WERE PEOPLE ARE GETTING HIT AND ARE BLEEDING IT WAS A QUIET GRAPPLING TOURNAMENT. I AGREE WITH BAD TTITLE! IF AVELLAN WAS BRAZILIAN AND PAUL HARRIS AMERICAN I WONDER HOW YOUR TITLE WOULD BE

I would say so (just the personal opinion of the GRACIEMAG translator), seeing as how it was such a dangerous position to be in and grappling is a contact sport — that is, there are always hands all over you, how are you to know the hands tapping you to get you to stop aren’t those of your opponent? The way I see it, the first thing a referee should do when he/she wants to stop a potentially injurious position would be to pry the hands away while demanding a halt to the action. Seems to me to be the only way to guarantee a fighter’s safety. You see referees diving into oncoming fists to prevent further injury in the UFC. How would grabbing someone’s arm in a grappling match be any different? I feel referees have to have attitude. They’re the authority in the competition, they have to impose that authority.

AND ALSO DO YOU HAVE AN EXCUSE FOR ALL THE OTHER TIMES PAUL HARRIS HAS DONE THIS????
